Luke Hughes is an insane skater, but he doesn't have the IQ Quinn or Lane has. Insane tools. Not sur if the tool box will be good enough for him to reach is potential.
Hard to have the IQ of those two, they are both elite with the puck. Luke doesn’t need to though, he is already playing at #1 defensmen level the last month. If the IQ comes then we are talking perennial Norris candidate.

The Hutson-Matheson pair is indeed absolutely wild but in all honesty there aren't any players on our roster who can take that #1RD spot. They tried Hutson with Savard, which is much more logical on paper, but Savard just isn't what he used to be anymore.

Guhle matches with Carrier. Xhekaj matches with Savard and later will match with Mailloux as we saw in the AHL. However Matheson and Hutson indeed aren't too great together which I believe is what's fueling Matheson trade rumours. I mean he was already prone to brain farts but now that he's playing on his offside? yeesh. I would've liked to have seen what Hutson and Kovacevic could've accomplished together but it is what it is.

Best defensive prospect since Makar?

Looks to be a generational talent.

Did you just reply to yourself?

AND his growth plates still haven't fused. Sky is the limit, baby.

Forget about being a full 5'10", let's head on straight to 6'6".

And he's on the dog shit Habs

Yeah we still kinda suck.

Didn't watch him this season , but previously , I would say premium tools with average tool box. A better version of Mike Matheson (low IQ/toolbox) with potential to be elite.

Yes Hutson and Quinn IQs are elite. So it's not a knock, but just saying they are not good comparables.

Luke thinks the game extraordinarily well. His defensive IQ is miles ahead of his brother at the same age.

I think it’d be a more logical move to have him dominate the AHL and focusing on improving his defensive game and removing the warts. Some of the plays he made last night would get most prospects sent down.
He already dominates the play at the NHL. Hutson mentally recovers well from mistakes. He understands that it’s normal and part of the game. You can’t skateboard and be scared of falling. He doesn’t need any sheltering.

He was better than Hutson defensively, which is the relevant point. Whether expected goals tell the full story or not doesn’t matter — he was not bleeding nearly as many chances as Lane is.
Different league, different teams, different defensive partners…. GA per 60 doesn’t tell you who’s better defensively when you’re looking at different seasons and clubs altogether.

I won’t argue one way or another on Hughes’ rookie year vs Hutson’s as I didn’t see Hughes but that stat doesn’t definitively tell you who’s better defensively. There are a lot more factors, one of which is Hutson playing with Matheson… great offensively but awful defensively.

That might be debatable, but Hughes subsequent rise to the top of of the league for defensive reliability is an extremely rare circumstance for a player his size. Like, it's almost never happened.
Smaller defensemen were rare to begin with. It’s only now that they’re becoming a little more common.

Kid is insane, genuinely feel bad for people who can’t enjoy his play
People get to caught up in ‘he’s better than this or that guy’ type stuff way too much.

Hutson has been pretty solid defensively. As has been said before, he comes with limitations. His size limits him from things like effectively clearing the crease. He’s never going to be a Chris Chelios physical brand of blueliner and because he owns the puck so often he’s going to have his share of giveaways.

He gives it his all every shift and he doesn’t back down from anything. It doesn’t matter if he’s better than this or that player or if he’s not as good as others. Great blueliner with a great rookie season. His shortcomings (no pun intended) are easy to live with.
