Hughes is 6’2, long reach for height, one of top 3 skating Dmen in the NHL. Do you really think he is the right guy to compare to? Find someone Hutson’s height, weight and skating that has been this bad defensively then see what they improved to.
Quinn Hughes 6'2? HAhaAHAHHAHAHAHAhaAHa

Well, right now I have:

Celebrini
Hutson
Mitchkov

I see a stronger case for Hutson being above Michkov right now than the other way around
Still most people, and probably voters as well would have Celebrini first right now.

Michkov was first as little as 2 weeks ago but he is in a funk and Hutson just had a nice run, these things will ebb and flow but Celebrini looks like the real deal and safe bet for the Calder.

Hard to say. Rookies are more prone to hit a wall. Not sure about michkov but certainly these guys coming from light schedules in ncaa have a major adjustment.

I know michkov has recently hit a wall. Hutson seems to be relatively consistent to this point. I can't comment on celebrini.

But it's also an inherently uphill battle for dmen to win awards like this.

whys this thread even still going on the main boards rather than on the montreal forum lol

its 2000 posts of someone lightly criticizing hutsons defensive abilities and all montreal fans losing their minds at that comment, then repeat. never seen such an insecure group
Nah it was mostly trolls trying to get under Habs fans skin, up until recently it's mostly just Habs fans and a couple good posters left because all the trolls bounced. Couldn't keep up with all the head shakes, hutson is too nice with it

but Celebrini looks like the real deal and safe bet for the Calder.

Hard to argue with that, since Celebrini is basically PPG

Still, Hutson as the runner Up make a lot of sense

He's having quite the Season and is already our best defenseman

Michkov could make a comeback and take back the second spot, but right now, it has to be Hutson's

If a guy says Hughes is 6’2 it is pretty damn easy to guess which brother he is talking about
Go back and read the comments again
The guy who referenced luke hughes mistakenly assumed the poster was comparing hutsons development to luke when he was comparing to quinn

Started here

The problem with Hutson is he can't play a lick of defence. He should be converted to forward and could probably stick in the top 6 of a mid-tier team.

You are clearly not watching him, that's B.S.

then calling luke top3 skating D is well overreaching, keep your hands off the peanut butter son
He is, check the film and the metrics. Pretty sure he is top 4 for top speed by a Dmen this year and has registered the fastest speed over the past two years. He is also number 1 for bursts over 22MPH playing far less games than the others on the list.

Quinn Hughes, did not know how to play defence when he was getting into the NHL either, he figured it out.

I see Lane doing the same thing

Yeah same here. Hughes had the advantage of better skating but both have high hockey IQ and he should get there at some point. It's impressive that he's not a liability while playing top pairing minutes at the moment.

Other than leading all dman in the league in top speed, 22 mph bursts, and 3rd in 20 mph bursts over this year and last.
I’m sure he will come back with some BS about it not quantifying agility, edge work and deception and that there are tons of defensmen better in those areas than Luke. Or he won’t come back in this thread.

As I said earlier in the thread, Quinn has elite elite skating. Lane has to figure it out while being very light and with average skating. Exponentially harder to do.

Just to clarify, Quinn was 180 pounds as a rookie with elite skating.
Lane is reported to be 162 pounds this year as a rookie as an average skater.

These two players are a terrible comparisons in their ability to defend.

Luke Hughes is an insane skater, but he doesn't have the IQ Quinn or Lane has. Insane tools. Not sur if the tool box will be good enough for him to reach is potential.

most of what I see from Hutsons shortcoming on the defensive side of the game result from poor decision making rather than getting out muscled or out skated. Its pretty crazy to see him muscle bigger guys off the puck. But i'm the furthest thing from being an expert so he may be hopeless.

Hard to have the IQ of those two, they are both elite with the puck. Luke doesn’t need to though, he is already playing at #1 defensmen level the last month. If the IQ comes then we are talking perennial Norris candidate.

The Hutson-Matheson pair is indeed absolutely wild but in all honesty there aren't any players on our roster who can take that #1RD spot. They tried Hutson with Savard, which is much more logical on paper, but Savard just isn't what he used to be anymore.

Guhle matches with Carrier. Xhekaj matches with Savard and later will match with Mailloux as we saw in the AHL. However Matheson and Hutson indeed aren't too great together which I believe is what's fueling Matheson trade rumours. I mean he was already prone to brain farts but now that he's playing on his offside? yeesh. I would've liked to have seen what Hutson and Kovacevic could've accomplished together but it is what it is.

Best defensive prospect since Makar?

Looks to be a generational talent.

Did you just reply to yourself?

AND his growth plates still haven't fused. Sky is the limit, baby.

Forget about being a full 5'10", let's head on straight to 6'6".

And he's on the dog shit Habs

Yeah we still kinda suck.
