So its nice Hutson is turning out to be a very good player and better than projected. But for the Habs his growth balances out the guys like Slafkovsky who will be lucky to be more than just a good player.
True enough , Slaf is not the usual first overall talent but its not like we kicking ourselves for picking slaf....yet

Exactly. He has nothing to learn against AHL teams. He needs to play against the fastest and most talented players to learn and get better and this is done at the NHL level. We are already seeing some adjustment and progress in his game defensively from the first few games to what he is doing now.
At the end of the day he is probably the 3rd best Dman on the Habs today. Matheson/Guhle are better- don't think anyone else is. He may well be the best one soon.

He is 1st in Habs D-men for points, 2nd in TOI, 1st in 5-5 pts for D-men on Habs. Yeah he is a minus 12 but 6 of those come from being scored on at the end of the game in empty net. Really other than empty net he is a minus 6 as a rookie on a crappy team. He is not out of place.

He is better than Matheson already on PP. Habs have scored 9 PPG with Hudson on ice in 59 mins (most of it with 2nd unit that has included Armia/Gallagher. Habs have scored 8 PP goals with Matheson on ice in 71 minutes with the top unit.

I think that is heavily debatable. Guhle is also for sure better defensively, but pretty much a black hole on offense.

I write out a long reply and this forum software refreshes to get more page views. Experience posting here is….weak.

Anyways, he is getting better defensively and looks to be elite offensively. Put aside fan tribalism and this is a very interesting and fun player to watch.

And no, he won’t win hardware, he has limitations which won’t allow him to be league best in anything. Like 99.5% of the league, so who cares.

I think Hutson's already a better blueliner than Matheson by a fair bit. I actually think he's our best blueliner. Love Ghule but Hutson just takes over the game.

He is going to be a very good offensive player. Guy has sick talent. Way too early to tell if he will be a good Dman. He could be Quinn Hughes good.

Crazy that he went 62nd OA. Was ranked 40th by The Bob McKenzie.

He's not bad defensively at all. He's limited in what he can do (he's never going to be good at clearing the crease) but he's scrappy and wins his share of puck battles.

This is what I was trying to tell Habs fans before the season. They didn't want to believe me.
Depends which Habs fans lol. He's pretty split within the fanbase where he's either a minute munching number 1 who will be missed sorely when he's gone or a bum who's just getting in Hutson's way.

Obviously the answer is in the middle - he's a fast middle pairing guy who makes either the most brilliant play or the most donkey brained one, and rarely anything in between.

Was mostly around the context. Very young dman, how challenging the defensive end of the rink is for almost all young defenders. And how MSL talks about his coachabilty, and being a fan watching that play put. He very clearly is making less mistakes, and his offence hasn’t suffered at all.

Basically no comps for this type of player so who knows where this goes, no point arguing over it.

Imagine landing the 1st OA pick, and most fans are pretty happy with who we picked, and yet the best prospect we drafted there was on day 2.

Disagree. Matheson, along with Savard, play all the hard minutes and produced high end offence. Sure he makes big, obvious mistakes but overall is a significantly better defender than Hutson. You would probably think differently if Hutson had to take Matheson’s minutes and vice versa.

And over Guhle? Get real, you can never be considered a better defender if you don’t kill penalties, block shots, clear creases, etc. The best dmen do all these things.

Its fun to see the Habs hate is still alive and well. If Hutson was on any other team this thread would have died by the end of October but here we are 73 pages in and still going strong.

P.S. Hutson is going to be a monster......
