Imagine landing the 1st OA pick, and most fans are pretty happy with who we picked, and yet the best prospect we drafted there was on day 2.
Nothing really wrong with the pick for 1st overall. 2nd overall Nemec is still struggling to establish himself in the NHL and have played a lot in the AHL this year. Jiricek was just traded. Wright and Gauthier havent done what Slafkovsky have in the NHL. Pretty much its Cooley who have less points in the NHL so far, but have a better ppg than Slafkovsky. Colley looks to get close to 70 points if he keeps his current pace + some development while Slafkovsky so far looks like he will get around 50 points this year again.

I think Slafkovsky has looked significantly better lately. The main thing with Slafkovsky is that I don't think he has any elite attribute but he is still very good at everything and very poweful. I do not think he will ever have crazy offensive numbers but his role to a playoff contender should be significant.

As for Hutson, he is improving so fast defensively and his offensive tools are exceptional. He might, at his peak, post similar offensive numbers to the like of other great defenseman in the NHL (Hughes, Josi, Fox). His ability to generate offense is truly special.

I think Hutson's already a better blueliner than Matheson by a fair bit. I actually think he's our best blueliner. Love Ghule but Hutson just takes over the game.
I think he will be significantly better than Matheson. His skills are probably better now - just needs the experience. I know I started the comparison by bringing up Guhle but really not a fair comparison for either of them as despite both their hockey cards saying Defense they are very different players with different roles. A winning team needs both of them but they play a different role.

Matheson routinely makes brain dead mistakes. I don’t see that with Hutson. I’d take Hutson over Matheson right now.

Hutson already has some of the best numbers in the league.

But he is a complete liability without the puck and as time goes on the headfakes become less and less impactful. I would say right now the way he is being developed is more in line with guys who become PPQB and play sheltered bottom 3 minutes on a contenders defense than any ridiculous comparisons to top 5 dmen in the league.

Dogwater take.

He's not being developed as a PPQB "bottom 3" D. Open your eyes.

Right? Some people are letting their strong bias show. The coaches are already giving him a lot of minutes to munch.

Hutson is amazingly talented. I have watched all of his games so far, and I can't wait to see how he'll look with two or three more years of experience. By that point he shouldn't be playing on a mediocre team anymore.

oh ...

already transfer rumors

:eek3:

All of his 17 assist are secondary assist on the PP. And nothing of this actually count. Oh and he sucks defensively. I hope i did it right.

You'd take him over Slafkovsky?

I think he's the 3rd best overall D behind Minty and Casey, but he should be the top scoring dman. Great pick by Hughes.
Slaf & Hutson go 1-2 in a redraft, quite easily.

Only real question is in what order.

Fantastic draft for the Habs. 2 future all stars, another 2-4 players with legit top 6/top 4 potential (Beck, Engstrom, Mesar, Rohrer) & a 5th rounder (Davidson) already well ahead of many 1st round picks in his AHL performance impact.

Could be one of the better draft classes of any organization in recent history.

Cooley goes 1st

He thinks the game at a very high level. He's finally supplanted Matheson from the first PP unit. Despite his diminutive stature he's not afraid to go into the corners. He's been working hard before each practice to improve his shot. It's getting better, but has a ways to go.

Cooley is easily ahead of both

That he had really big thighs
So you're saying he doesn't have big thighs?

You seem confused. You keep saying that I'm wrong about Hutson but you've been unable to articulate what I'm wrong about. I've been one of the most complimentary posters in this thread, so I guess you think he's not a great young dman?
