I just think it's hilarious how underlying metrics are fake right up until it's "OZ poss time/game" or anything else he ranks well in, which is more a stylistic descriptor (hutson likes to hold the puck and skate to attempt to create rather than making a quick pass) than anything tbh.

Making more simple plays, getting caught out of position less, not trying to be the hero every time. Weirdly the exact things I said would help him be more effective.

All stats are is counting events. They have to be taken with context, and aren't the be all and end all, but they can be quite useful.

This thread is so messy because different people are discussing different things. Beyond that the thread title isn’t helping. If it was something about Hutson getting off to a nice start or a similarly nuanced message I think the discussion would be much more civil. You have a few posters saying Hutson is amazing. You have a few posters saying despite his assist numbers he’s a net negative. Then you have most posters saying the offensive talent is evident and he’s doing well with the puck but needs to work on various aspects of his game like his shot and play without the puck. I don’t think thr majority of posters are saying anything all that controversial but a number are engaging with the extreme positions and making the discussion look worse than it should. He’s a talented kid and even with a subpar shot is effective offensively. As a rookie that’s excellent

He's exceeded expectations for anybody that's not a complete homer , like the dude who made that Makar Hughes thread....jesus christ. Guy is a second round pick , most habs fans had him slotted on the third pairing with minimum pp time this year and now he's our second best defenseman by merit. (Not saying much on our team I know)

Let's be honest here 99% of dmen are bad at defending at the NHL at 20 years old. The exception are rare.

Facts.

Like Luke Schenn came into the league at 18 years old as what, 6'2" 210 lbs and known as a pure defensive D-man.

He f***in sucked at defending in the NHL, cause of course he would. His size helped him to not get bullied but Hutson doesn't need that because he doesn't come with cement feet. He relies on being elusive to stay safe, wont always work but its better than trying to bulk up and fight force with force.

He is still evolving as a player in the best league in the world, there will be some pain. Sometimes for him, sometimes for the fans

Honestly Hutson is doing fine don't believe people who do not watch habs games, He'll get caught being too offensive but that's something he can easily learn to not do or temper at the nhl level. In the AHL nobody will punish him for being too offensive the guys do not have the speed nor the skills.

I understand the idea but for Montreal who cares. The team is mediocre for now and if the learning process works the team will be better off in the long run. Jack Hughes struggled on and off for his first year plus and then turned the corner and it was fine. Hutson can stay in thr NHL. On a good team maybe it’s a different conversation.

I was worried he'd learn bad habits, but he has been much better in the last month or so.

The first month or so the talent was showing, but the decision making in terms of picking his spots was lacking.

November was much much better in terms of that

So its nice Hutson is turning out to be a very good player and better than projected. But for the Habs his growth balances out the guys like Slafkovsky who will be lucky to be more than just a good player.

Honestly Hutson is doing fine don't believe people who do not watch habs games, He'll get caught being too offensive but that's something he can easily learn to not do or temper at the nhl level. In the AHL nobody will punish him for being too offensive the guys do not have the speed nor the skills.

Exactly. He has nothing to learn against AHL teams. He needs to play against the fastest and most talented players to learn and get better and this is done at the NHL level. We are already seeing some adjustment and progress in his game defensively from the first few games to what he is doing now.

It’s a process and given the state of the Habs last him percolate with them. It’s not like the Habs are a playoff team and need to win now. They should try to develop as many young players as they can without bottoming out. He isn’t a perfect player by any means but that’s ok at his age. He will have to round out his game for the Havs to improve if they continue to play him so much but this is the kind of season to do that.
