He is what we call an expert opinion on the subject.Do you know what team you root for ?
Is it possible to see how he does when he is when he's with the top line on the ice? (Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky)
If he does better with them it probably would be easier to revamp the rest of the team since a large portion of them are on the way out this season or the next.
Its absolutely ridiculous to compare advanced stats after 10 games where Montreal literally got blown out in 3 of them.

Blow outs really don't matter if you're just looking at which players Lane seems to gell best with.
I'm of the opinion that the AHL fodder and Geriatric struggle with where they need to be on the ice to make Hutson's play's manifest into a goal. If that is true then the problem will fix itself.
Demidov, Beck, Kapanen, Laine, and eventually Hage are all better and more cerebral players.
There is 100% time.
He's 20. And the offensive SKILL is there. Which is why it's so disappointing. A talent like Hutson is capable of being an offensive catalyst for team offense at levels probably close to DOUBLE what he's currently doing.
Really just trying to do too much out there. Trying to force the great play instead of taking the good play.
(I've spoken the exact same way about Seamus Casey and Simon Nemec as they got caved in to start the year).
Everyone on MTL has gotten caved.
He cannot do ANYTHING with the Dach line. Someone's gotta change their playstyle when they're out there together
The suzuki line has gotten especially caved this year. Less offense and better defense with Hutson on than off (suzuki is giving up like 8 xGoals/60 without hutson 5v5). Still sub 40% with hutson but the promise is there. I'd have to wait until that line figures their shit out to make a real take
the kids played 13 NHL games. He hasn't had a chance to gel or not gel with anyone yet. His coach doesn't even know what his role on the team is yet. Its all just getting figured out. He looks the part and is putting up points.
Dissecting advanced stats at this time is clownish.

Erik Karlsson was the most talented person on his team back in the day and he didnt do this to that extent lol. Thats just a poor excuse and ignoring the discussion topic.
I predict that stat will go down dramatically once Montreal hires an actual head coach that just doesnt let players do whatever they want and actually instills some structure.
Looking deeper than the point totals matters.
If you use 13 games to make determinations about his career, you're a moron.
But if you use ALL of the info about those 13 games to make determinations about how he's played in those 13 games, that is 100% fair.
Maybe it's a different perspective for a fanbase where winning games rn doesn't matter, but that's where I come from.
Like I said, it looks like Lane doesnt even know what his role is right now. When he played college he was basically the guy you gave the puck to everytime he was on the ice and got in position for a pass. Looks like hes still trying to do that and obviously its not going to work as well in the NHL.
well obviously you have a different perspective, you used the word "disappointing" when describing his game.
No one around Montreal is disappointed with Lane Hutson right now.

I think Montreal knew they were getting a rover when they drafted him. Hutson's game is most effective when he has the puck on his stick, he breaks down defensive alignments and throws dimes out which his teammates don't yet expect. Unfortunately his partner is a terrible skater (and just not great all-around) and the defensive structure is non-existent so there are a lot of breakdowns.
I agree Montreal needs an actual head coach and an actual system, but any coach that would try to coach Hutson out of playing his unique and effective style would be making a mistake.
The funny thing is it is still working very well, but he has to dumb his game down a bit for the Armias, Dvoraks, Gallaghers, and Andersons of the world who don't expect to receive the passes they're receiving.
When he gets a guy like Demidov out there who sees those seams and opportunities (like he had with Celebrini, another brilliant player in terms of hockey sense), you'll see some magic out there.
Then maybe they have lower standards than I do.
I expected Hutson to be a bigger catalyst for on ice offense. His defense has been what I expected, maybe even a bit better. Not good, but not unplayable bad.
But MTL generates SHOCKINGLY little with him on the ice
21.26 shots/60 5v5 ranks 162st/171 dmen in the league so far with 100 minutes.
I expected that number to be above 30. I expected his xGoals for/60 to be closer to 3.
I expected him to open things up for his teammates to create, not run things only through him

yep obviously lower standards. I tend to give a young player at least a season and a half before I make my mind up on him but sometimes I'll make an exception like I did for Slaf where I thought he was the worst first overall ever about 40 games into his career.

It's impossible to dissociate the individual from the team since he plays for the team. If he generates offense that leads to points, those points help the team win so it's a moot point. Who cares if he can't get the Newhooks, Armias and Andersons of team to ppg or does it individually?
When he's on the ice he generates offense which can help the team win games. The teams not winning because they're shit but Hutson has been a major bright spot.

He's hit two posts the last few games, sprung multiple people on breakaways, made several perfect passes to teammates who weren't expecting it and therefore didn't get a shot off.Does generating offense mean actual goals and assists?
That on top of having 7 points in 11 games regardless.
Oh I'm not saying he'll have a bad career or that my career projections have dropped for him.
My big worry, which was that his defense would translate to Tony DeAngelo quality and limit his playablility, is dealt with. I don't think he'll ever be good defensively or even average though, he just doesn't have the skating to recover from the positions he puts himself in offensively. But he is someone you can play in an NHL lineup without having to give him the Xhekaj hiding treatment against only scrubs.
And his individual offense has translated.
But in terms of his play over the 13 games of his career. I've been disappointed.
Again, my view on that is more based on a "how much is he helping you win right now", which I understand is not the same perspective MTL fans have, since they are not trying to compete this year (no matter how many claimed they wanted to be "in the mix")
Hutson's challenge throughout his career will be figuring out how to be himself offensively, while finding ways to make the simple play and let his teammates create. If he tries to make the hero play (trying to beat a guy 1 on 1 on the perimeter) less often, I expect it will open things up for him even more when he DOES do it, as defenders will have to respect all the options more.

I mean, it’s really not hard to see when you actually watch the game but some random dude will not hesitate to die on this hill with his spreadsheet stats.
It’s worth mentioning that this same guy also says Xhekaj has generated more offensive chances than Hutson. That’s all you need to know right there

"It's impossible to dissociate the individual from the team" is an interesting thing to say as you, check notes, try to ignore Hutson's impact on his team's offense to only look at his individual offense.
Just want to make it clear, you argument is "Who cares if when he's on the ice that his team doesn't produce much offense, as long as he gets points"?
I think we can all agree he generates a ton of offense. A lot of the time it's for the other team but offense is offense.
