They cleared out two contracts they didn't want and got a decent forward in Drew O'Connor. Now, is it good business to be constantly signing players that you immediately get rid of, no, but I at least admire the ability to do it.

I just don't like his foot speed come playoffs, he's not someone I want to replace at all means but if a better player is available, I wouldn't mind it.

With how frequently he gets hurt there’s a decent chance he won’t even be available to play.

I'm not surprised. He can play some Center and with Dallas he may actually keep playing on the PP1 and putting up points in that manner. Dallas' power play hasn't been great. And then you're probably paying to get the deal down now as opposed to at the deadline.
Seems like most aren't expecting this to be a deep draft. Maybe not coincidentally, now 10 of the 16 first rounders from current playoff teams have already been traded.
Reminds me a bit of the deadline deals for Palmieri/Zajac and Tarasenko/Mikkola which netted firsts. Maybe separately the Sharks could have gotten a late 2nd for Ceci, but they combine him with Granlund to get a 1st.
Bummed at this rate I won't have to take deadline day off work.

The cap may go up the next few years but NJ is really stuck this year. They have no easily moveable pieces and can’t really make any significant add until the deadline when they have accumulated some space. Right now they have about $1 mil according to cap wages

I think this is officially the most activity we've seen pre-deadline in a LONG time. We normally don't see movement like this, which is why I never expect much when people are like ''We need to make a trade! We need to do something!'' mid season.

Think they have been using Brendan Smith since Heiskanen got hurt. Maybe they see Ceci as an upgrade over Smith.
Granlund as a big minutes player on a bad team held no interest for me. Very glad he's off the board.

I’d guess his thinking is that he’d rather add a player whose value isn’t being inflated by piling up counting stats on PP1 of one of the most shit ass teams in the league.
I’d rather have say, Pius Suter, who is solid defensively, PKs well, and can provide some value away from high end players/without PP time.
Granlund had no value at all 2 years ago - I don't think he has gotten significantly better, he is just playing more and with San Jose's best players.
There's a difference between 'will play less here' and what's going on with Granlund, who has been playing 21 minutes a game the last two seasons - he's 10th among forwards in TOI.

He's a good player, but he's also just pretty much had two career years in his 30s while being THE GUY on the worst team in the league. This is a case where playing on a bad team probably helps the player out, as he wouldn't be a top line player on playoff teams. He really wasn't before he got to the Sharks.
He's a good player on any team, but he's probably inflated his offensive output playing bigger minutes and icetime on the Sharks than he would with a pretty good team.
On a team like the Devils, just for instance, he's not gonna produce anywhere near as much as he does on San Jose because Nico and Jack are getting all the icetime over here. He'd be a really good upgrade in the bottom 6, but is a third line center rental worth a first round pick?

The Canucks just paid a 1st for two rentals, so I don't think they are sellers at the deadline.
