I love how Hutson has looked so far in the NHL and believe he has a bright future. I think having more skilled players in the Big Leagues is awesome, despite their stature. He will be fine this year (and continuing years to come) and of course will have a learning curve, no different than any Number 1 D in the league ala Hughes and Makar. The biggest thing is can Hutson adapt to whatever the opposing teams do when they start focusing them, this will determine him joining the class of Hughes and Makar rather than a prime Barrie (still a good player but not a Norris winner). No matter what he has been a steal where he was drafted and Montreal has a good one, will be a joy to watch him progress.

ps Montreal is throwing him to the wolves (I believe) as he is playing over 21 minutes a night. They obviously believe in him.

I was impressed with him against Ottawa on Saturday night. He's tiny and yet he can control the game (offensively). He's the real deal, no doubt. However, if I was a Habs fan, I'd be worried about him getting steam rolled by a 6'4 power forward in his own end. As the season goes along, it'll be interesting to see how his body holds up to the rigors of the NHL.

He's an offensive dman, he's not an all-round defensive superstar. If his partner blows their coverage I'm not expecting him to make a fantastic defensive play to save the day.
The positive thing is, he's so young it can easily be worked on. Look at Quinn Hughes in his first couple seasons for example, he was phenomenal offensively but a liability defensively. He's since worked on his defensive game and improved into an elite all around D-man, doesn't have the size but he makes the right plays and is good with his stick.

Hutson is gonna be a future superstar, even if it's offense only still extremely valuable. Montreal is headed in the right direction, Kent Hughes is doing a phenomenal job there.

Krug, Quinn, Spurgeon, Hughes have all managed to endure bigger forwards despite their size.

He's not the first undersized d-man.

Last night was my first look at him and I was impressed. Obviously super skilled and skates incredibly well. Excited for the Habs and their future with him.

His IQ is off the charts so there’s no reason to think his defensive game can’t improve drastically over time

Agreed, and I see him busting his ass out there on defence too. He's just not as good at it yet but the effort is there. I'm confident he'll figure it out

What I don't get is what sets him apart from all the other undersized guys who struggled defensively but could work magic with the puck? Like, I get he is young and can develop but defensively he will always be limited by his size in the NHL. Hutson is not boxing out his net or breaking the cycle.

Here is my take: We are a week into a new season. This is basically still pre-season for a lot of clubs. How does he do when teams start actually trying in the spring preparing for the playoffs? When teams scout him a bit more? When teams play him physically?

I see a lot of empty calories in his play so far (again he is young). Teams will allow him to stay to the outside, and he will dance around the perimeter stick handling like he is Patty Kane and then the media acts like he was McDavid on the shift when he didn't generate anything really dangerous.

So for the 4th time, he is so young it is impossible to tell what he becomes, but as of right now, the fact he is being put in the same sentence as Q. Hughes, Makar, etc is absolutely mental.

What makes him like those guys and not like a Durzi who is also an undersized mid round pick, bad defensively, but can put up points like nothing?

I'm a Bruins fan but also a longtime regular at BU games so I'm rooting for Lane to have a long career. His younger brother Cole, now a BU freshman, is fun to watch as well.

That highlight really shows one of the biggest flaws we hockey fans and the players have to endure. Look at those nicknames. Hutty, Eisey? They can't do any better than that? Every guy named Smith is called Smitty. Every guy named Jones is called Jonesy. It's time for hockey to do something about this. Why can't Lane Hutson be carrying the puck up the Hutson River Line or something like that? This complete lack of imagination must be stifling to the players.

If Hutson can put up points like Durzi, he's a successful pick and player for them. Of course they'll need to surround him with the right people to make up for his deficiencies, but it wouldn't shock me to see Reinbacher be that guy for them. Guhle is playing decently, and Barron may yet grow into a top 4 D man.... That's at least three top four D men, and Barron... once everyone matures... that's not a bad start. Savard needs to be replaced with a veteran who can actually help LT, and eventually Xhekaj will be replaced with an upgrade as well.

For sure a successful pick, but a far cry from a Hughes or Makar. That is my issue is the comparisons and hype train are out of control right now in Habs media and fanbase.

Why are they comparing a 2nd rounder 5 foot 8 dman with top 10 picks and not other small offensive dmen like Durzi or the many others before him who managed to have a career running a PP unit but never became a franchise dman?

Because Hutson has elite offensive talent. He's far more talented than Durzi...

Montreal is a big market just like Toronto. Everything in both cities gets incredibly hyped. Fans of other teams are bugged in both cases. It's just the way it is.
