For sure a successful pick, but a far cry from a Hughes or Makar. That is my issue is the comparisons and hype train are out of control right now in Habs media and fanbase.

Why are they comparing a 2nd rounder 5 foot 8 dman with top 10 picks and not other small offensive dmen like Durzi or the many others before him who managed to have a career running a PP unit but never became a franchise dman?

What is "Habs media?"

Also why are you, the most over the top Maple Leafs homer on the entire site consuming this "Habs media?" How are you consuming it?

He really hasn’t been . Just lives off his prior reputation . Matheson and Ghule were both much better last season .

Matheson put up great numbers for the Canadiens last year but in no way, shape or form was he better than Savard was defensively for the Canadiens.

In fact, he wasn't even close to as steady as Savard was.

Matheson was playing 25 min on the top pairing against the best players in the nhl. Savard was playing 20 min on the 2nd pairing. Savard was solid last season, but if he was given Matheson's role, he wouldn't have looked as good.

Durzi doesn't get me out of my seat like huston does.

People are comparing him to makar and Hughes because of his high end skill and IQ. He looks like a magician already.

Habs might be expecting too much from him at 20….

Should be ppqb + average mins…. Hopefully don’t diminish his confidence
You can answer your own question by watching the game. He’s the #1 player in the league in average puck possession per game.

He’s been nothing short of amazing. It’s hard to say the same about Caufield, Slaf, Suzuki, Dach & Newhook so far this year. They have been worrisome to say the least.

Possession doesn't mean he is effective... from all the games I've seen, he skates around the outside of the zone with the puck and then forces a bad play, probably wasting 20 seconds every time, but his possession numbers are going up.

His xGF% is 42%... you'd think with all this possession he'd generate something and not get much generated against him... turns out that is not the case.

It would probably help if the entire Montreal offensive wouldn’t be a complete blackhole right now.

May I suggest you look at his teammates xGF% when he’s on the ice versus when he isn’t? I already know the stats but I’ll let you look it up and it’ll give you all the answer you’re looking for.

His possession numbers are so high... why would this matter as much? The argument is that he always has the puck, yet somehow has a terrible xGF%... almost like he does nothing when he has the puck.
