Speculation: LA Kings Offseason Thread

That’s the issue. You think black players need other black players to relate to and be comfortable with. It’s a bizarre segregationist comment to make.

You’re equating black Americans/Canadians with Swedes, Russians, Finns, etc. who come from a completely different country with a different language and set of cultural customs.

Really use that big five minute fighting major brain of yours and think about that for a second.
I can see what @Johnny Utah is saying to be fair.

The black players live in a different reality in many ways, just living in NA doesn’t mean you share the same culture. Certain experiences you only truly understand if you’ve been through it. That doesn’t apply to just race but it is the reality of it. Once I found people that had the same health condition as me just having people that properly understood was huge for me, I cannot overstate it.

I’m not expert but I know enough to know I don’t understand some of the additional challenges/experiences people of colour must face. I’m not saying we should sign anyone to fill that sort of role, but equally I genuinely have no idea.

I also imagine there is a whole bunch on additional pressure on QB being the highest drafted black player, beyond just being #2. I suspect he feels that from both sides in different ways. I have no idea in truth, but if he did feel that pressure having guys around that properly get it probably helps.

These times? Jesus. Here we go. This is hockey, take the tampon out.

Blake signing a former fan favorite and one of the most prominent black players in the past decade as a mentor to those players should not be interpreted as anything more. Maple Leafs players recently said that Simmonds is very feared and respected around the league. He’s also one of my fav players.

Jon Hoven mentioned that Englund played with Grundstrom and Kempe since he’s Swedish. Better call him out too.

PLD said it’s good to go a team with a French player in Danault. Is there a problem with that?

It’s about comfort level and having a teammate you can relate to.
I already said I didn't take it as anything nefarious or negative. Just that your default suggestion of bringing in a black player to mentor 3 other completely different black players is misplaced.

Thomas and Byfield make sense. They're actually friends, QB was on Thomas' podcast, and they won gold with Canada together. Lee's Swedish. Why are you assuming he'd be more comfortable hanging out with black guys?

Hoven brought up former teammates.

PLD himself brought up a player, but also mentioned learning from Kopitar.

I also thought it was cringey when a recent interview mentioned having Robitaille in charge as a selling point for PLD. I get WHY it was asked, but still would have approached it from another angle, like focusing on how Robitaille might be more of a local legend/Quebecois player being a factor. Not because of the assumption they'd just bond easier or seeing him in charge.

On another note, I think the worst mistake this franchise ever made in recent history is not trading Doughty and Kopitar when they started the rebuild. Having them both f***ed up the pacing of the rebuild and gave Blake delusions of grandeur.

From here on out for any team I watch, sell all your players and start completely clean. Get cheap vets later.
I don't post much but I did raise the subject of trading Doughty about 4-5 years ago as it was obviously a waste of Kings $$$'s and his career to stay.

Nobody agreed back then. People are attached to him bigly.

Back then I was convinced by my boy RJ that it’d be good to have vets like them since they’re accomplished and they can mentor the the youth.

I was very wrong. It’s a lot more dangerous to have these players since they become roadblocks for players and stupid Gms can f*** up the rebuild before the assets are done.

Funny how Brad Treliving picks up Berrtuzzi and Reaves. Leafs went farther than the Kings - even he coming from the West seeing the need for toughness.

Guess Blake doesn’t see this.

Edmonton still has Kane and Nurse and Kings still have no one to match up to them or hold them accountable for all the cheap shots.

Darnell Nurse was the biggest reason the Kings weren’t swept last year. He was very clearly a net negative for the Oilers the entire series.

Kopitar being on the books until after this coming season wouldnt have mattered as much.
Doughty publicly calling out management for rebuilding was the turning point and really put the team in a half in half out situation. Usually players that dont want to go through it get traded to a contender. Management should not cave to an out of prime players demands and should do whats right for the big picture of the franchise.
That said despite all this teams warts they can be good if the stars align. Dubois Byfield Kaliyev and Clarke will decide how good the team becomes just as long as everyone else keeps doing what theyve been doing.

How hard was it to watch the semi dynasty of tampa bay lightning and see that size and toughness wins? Even more obvious is the fact that its always been like this. ALWAYS.

If Kopitar, Pierre BLuc and Danno for $23.5M can’t outscore McDavid and Draisatl in the playoffs, then the intangibles better be delivered beaucoup and tout suite during the regular season.

That includes 200 ft play, staying late in practice, always speaking to the media mouthpieces following a disappointing loss, mentoring the blue chippers, signing autographs and any other possible tangible required.

If toughness is the deciding factor, I’d find someone younger than Simmonds and let one of those overpaid vets pull a collateral duty and arrange the team outings to Roscoes Chicken n Waffles.

The roster sucks.

Everyone not named Kopitar, Roy, Gavrikov and Doughty and PLD needs to be 3 inches taller minimum. They also all need their balls to drop. Oh and we have no goalie and can’t even carry 23 players. Add in the hopium that the kids “pan out” when Todd won’t even f***ing play them in meaningful roles for the last 3 years outside of Byfield and yeah…

The roster sucks.

I get that. Just play fast, because they can, at the trade deadline address toughness.

I don’t know man. I watched this team suck for years after Gretzky left. We have gotten spoiled. This IS a good team.

[MIN/TBL] Pat Maroon (20% retained) and Max Cajkovic for 2024 7th round pick

Agreed, but the Cap always wins in the end. I would of done this trade for the Kings instead of the russian.

With Bertuzzi signing a 1 year deal, I wouldn't be surprised if we target him next offseason. Feels like we've been linked with him forever.

Kings better try to figure out a way outta paying Lizotte and Moore their contracts pronto!LA-Zit is a 4th liner and Moore a 3rd liner but Moore's contract is 4.2 M over the next 5 years...Time to trade him for nothing to save face

I meant because he is an established black player - someone they can look up to.

I also met Byfields agent thru a group of friends while in Vegas for the finals and he was QB was having a hard time because he was so young and couldn’t go out like the rest of the guys. Some other things to…

I’m sure getting cross checked by Zadorov didn’t help. McEwen had a visor from his broken jaw so all he could do was smack talk Zadorov.
Simmonds would get him a fake ID stat and he and DOughty would be reunited.
Legendary partyers in case you guys did not know.
It was part of the reason he was traded away.
Then Simmonds would retire as a King and work for player development.

Lol, Blake won't let that happen.

Should we go back to Blake sucks, the rebuild sucks & Bustfield?

Nah, stop being a party pooper, being upset at everything on this board is more fun, for us readers that is.

Looking at CapFriendly, the smart move is to probably trade Lizotte for some pick/prospect. Even if you like him, he's coming up as an RFA with arb rights, he's certainly not going to move up in the lineup without injuries, and you've got guys who can fill the role he does. Along with sending down Rittich, you're looking at $1,798,333 in cap for the following with 2 open spots if I can still do math.

Byfield-Kopi-Kempe
Fiala-PLD-Kaliyev
Moore-Danault-Arvidsson
Grundstrom-JAD-Lewis
Extra (Fagemo/other)

Anderson-Doughty
Gavrikov-Roy
Englund-Clarke (him vs Spence here is almost the same money-wise)
Extra (Tobi/Connauton/Moverare)

Copley
Talbot
