Speculation: LA Kings Offseason Thread

I meant because he is an established black player - someone they can look up to.

I also met Byfields agent thru a group of friends while in Vegas for the finals and he was QB was having a hard time because he was so young and couldn’t go out like the rest of the guys. Some other things to…

I’m sure getting cross checked by Zadorov didn’t help. McEwen had a visor from his broken jaw so all he could do was smack talk Zadorov.

Ahahaha I just realized Blake signed Rittich too.

Is this clown legitimately trying to assemble the worst goalie stable the league has ever seen? Cause f*** me sideways this just might be it
They need a goalie to share the net with Portillo in Ontario. Unless you thought Portillo was going to be the sole goaltender in the minors...

Pretty weird comment, dude.
Given there are still not a large amount of black players in the NHL I don't see how this comment should ruffle your feathers. Thinking that older Sweedes, Russians, Jewish, Asians, whatever couldn't form an instant bond with younger one's given they have something in common immediately is silly. I don't think JU meant anything negative in his comment.

Def nothing negative. I’m half a minority so I can relate. See post above - he nails it.

I wish we can find the posts on here from 15 years ago when these boards went ballistic that the Kings missed out on signing Gomez, Drury, and Briere, and wound up with Handzus, Nagy, and Calder instead.

I didn't interpret it as a negative, but beyond helping young black players navigate racism in hockey, Byfield, Thomas, Simmonds and Lee are all very different players. Without additional context or explanation, especially in these times, it can lead to misunderstandings.

It's like when we, subconsciously, just group players of similar nationalities as "mentors" or "buddies." It's not nefarious, but I think it's good to be cognizant of how we inherently group minorities/other nationalities. It would be like saying Grundstrom and Kempe should be on a line together, or they should be buddies, because they're both Swedish.

These times? Jesus. Here we go. This is hockey, take the tampon out.

Blake signing a former fan favorite and one of the most prominent black players in the past decade as a mentor to those players should not be interpreted as anything more. Maple Leafs players recently said that Simmonds is very feared and respected around the league. He’s also one of my fav players.

Jon Hoven mentioned that Englund played with Grundstrom and Kempe since he’s Swedish. Better call him out too.

PLD said it’s good to go a team with a French player in Danault. Is there a problem with that?

It’s about comfort level and having a teammate you can relate to.

Swedes, Russians, etc. share a common language and are coming from a completely different country with a completely different set of cultural customs.

That’s the issue. You think black players need other black players to relate to and be comfortable with. It’s a bizarre segregationist comment to make.

You’re equating black Americans/Canadians with Swedes, Russians, Finns, etc. who come from a completely different country with a different language and set of cultural customs.

Really use that big five minute fighting major brain of yours and think about that for a second.

I think the only time when having a mentor of your same nationality is important is when the players don’t speak English or French.

I do think that Byfield doesn’t need a Simmonds when he has a danault, and Kopitar. Good and bad people come in all shapes and colors.

I think you are digging a bit here. You really think Wayne or any of those players would have a problem with that comment? I do not.

No guarantee they would have a bond, but suggesting they might is not racism or bigotry even in the slightest sense.

Like Pierre Luc is looking forward to being on a team with Danault. He said it.

Mountain. Meet molehill.

On another note, I think the worst mistake this franchise ever made in recent history is not trading Doughty and Kopitar when they started the rebuild. Having them both f***ed up the pacing of the rebuild and gave Blake delusions of grandeur.

From here on out for any team I watch, sell all your players and start completely clean. Get cheap vets later.

I didn’t say they need, I said it would help.

I’ve heard other black players in the past say in the past it helped when other black player was on the team.

Stop being so sensitive. I didn’t anything more than that. This is hockey.

Agreed. This what wrong with the world today and the reason why the Kings don’t have ice girls anymore. Can’t offend anyone, yet Vegas and Anaheim and Arizona still have them.

Pretty disingenuous to state it like that. I watched the full interview. He was asked about Danault because during the covid year they played Montreal a lot. He said Danault is extremely difficult to play against which is why he’s happy Danault is on his team and looks forward to playing with him instead. He even said he looks forward to playing with Kopitar too in the same sentence.

Let’s not twist words. Not a good look.

Drawing a big parallel between black people and foreigners is not the brilliant psychosocial observation you and JU think it is

It makes perfect sense that Byfield would feel isolated as one of the few players in his age range on a team filled with players of vastly different experience levels, lifestyles and expectations. Kaliyev is another player who seems overwhelmed at times.

If you are going to have a rebuild, you need to clear out high expectations and allow young players to take ownership of their roles in the club. Kids who can be stars, who you need to be stars, can't be made to feel like supporting parts while chasing something they don't know how to catch yet. It just kills confidence and adds provable weight to any self doubt. Byfield's shooting percentage has to be greatly hampered by a lack of confidence.

Its happening with the Rags too. Harming their own investments. The Kings "learn how to try checking" first policy really is second cousin to a fraternity hazing.

I believe one of the reasons Danault signed with LA is because he wanted to be put in a scoring role.

I wonder if the PLD signing affects that in his view.
