What are we looking like longterm between the pipes?

Quick cant last forever, Is Petey the answer?

Do we have any goalie prospects that look legit?

no, we do not

We've got a few lotto scratchers but no bluechipper 'next guy' at all.

I like Parik the best of the bunch but he's just as liable to bust completely as he is to make it.

I honestly wonder if someone overpays for Quick this off season should it be considered? He will be on the final year of his deal, and he would still provide value to say Edmonton. LA could then focus on Petersen and bringing in a veteran UFA.
Don't think it helps LA in the short term, and this team is past the selling stage, but it may still make sense.

I can't imagine the Kings would reject an overpayment for Quick or anyone else really.

Perhaps, but it would have to be a serious overpayment I would think. Goalies don't go for very much, even the top-tier ones, and Blake seems to respect some perceived sanctity around the core four on the roster. Never say never, but he made it sound like he isn't selling much of anyone and may even add to let it ride into a possible postseason play.

In the end, they've made their bed with Petersen for better or worse. At the very least, he isn't really signed long-term so if they need to, parting with him shouldn't be too difficult, but there is also still time for him to turn it around. They can't ride Quick forever, and who knows what things will look like later into next season... At the moment, given the way this season is going, I doubt they are very keen on letting Quick go as easily as maybe they would have a year or two ago...

I thought Petersen would take over the net this year, but he had some early struggles and Quick had some flashes of his old self after the first few games of the season. Right now the plan seems to be for the next 3 years after this season is primarily Cal Petersen. He's 27, Quick will be 37 next year. Both have mediocre goals against averages and save percentages, pretty much the same. The difference is when Petersen starts, the Kings have a much better record. Kings are 15-9 with 31 out of a possible 48 pts when Cal starts, Kings are 15-17 with 36 out of a possible 64 pts when Quick starts. So the Kings are leaving a lot of points on the table when Quick is in the net, attribute that to any factor you may wish.

Right now Villalta is the best of the Kings prospects in goal, more experienced and the AHL staff thinks pretty highly of him, but its clear the Kings so far have not had the confidence that he's NHL ready since they have brought in a veteran AHL/NHL goalie every year to play on the Reign as the "next man up". I think the Kings will give Villalta another deal, maybe just 1 year, we'll see. He's been a lot better this year, so improvement is noted. Not sure if he has the talent to take the Reign to the promised land, I guess we'll find out. Ingham and Parik have shown some flashes, but are inconsistent. We'll see if any win a job next year in ONT. Parik still is on an AHL deal, has not signed an NHL contract yet. Ingham has one more year on his NHL deal.

Villalta is not the answer and will in fact be the reason the Reign are out in a round or two.

That's not to say the others are better options right now either but to point out there's plenty to worry about in net right now.

Goalies are voodoo of course but I can't remember the last prospect the Kings had that I was so sure about. big "nope" from me. The guy will be lucky to hang in the AHL.

Would tend to agree. Did not like him when he was playing junior in the Soo and don't like him now. He's one of those career AHL guys who may get a cup of coffee if the organization he is in gets hit with the injury bug.

If for some reason they trade him, it's not going to be to Edmonton. And why are the Oilers giving the Kings an overpayment?

How do we still talk about trading off vets or UFAs when the Kings are in a playoff race this year, and will likely expect to be in it again next year? Is this season not happening? Are they actually the 4th worst team in the league? Am I in a different Matrix?

I just see an opportunity that will only happen this off season. Petersen was supposed to be better this year and take the crease, it has not happened. So admittingly it would be a gamble. But I think with Petersen as this teams #1 LA should still be in a playoff spot next year, and the assets used in dealing quick could be flipped to bring in some help elsewhere.
I think there is a small chance of this playing out, but I think it is worth exploring as it is a fleeting opportunity,
Why would Edmonton, because their biggest need is in net, they have no cap, and Holland is an idiot.

Grundstrom has done the same thing, AND he realizes hockey is a team sport. He still gets benched for no reason.

Before Grundstom last dressed I was saying it should be someone else....he score. Before AA played last game i thought it should have been Grundstrom, AA scores.
I need to keep my mouth shut on who is being dressed vs scratched.

Guy gets back on thee roster and scores. This has happened multiple times. Perhaps he deserves a full time look.

And after the first couple good games back in he fades. Hard. Or gets injured. This has happened multiple times.

100% not, keep it up.....say Byfield should be scratched, SAY IT!!! lmao

You know it's interesting that Carson Soucy is the +/- leader on the Kraken at +9 and it's really not even close. Most of the team is well in the minus column. Perhaps this would be a great target for the Kings to go after.

Been saying this for awhile now, he fits this teams defensive needs to a tee

I've said this before..I am definitely not a Villalta fan. The Kings have an excellent goaltending development team but they absolutely need a really good prospect to round everything out.

The goalie situation is pretty bleak, but I’d argue it’s also not vitally important at this point. Not yet at least.

Goalies are a crap shoot, could just as easily stumble across a decent prospect in the 5th round as blow it on a 1st round talent.

True, but i wonder whether it is worth trading for an up and comer. There was a sabres fan talking about surplus in their pipeline the other day.

Yeah im not sure if anyone is paying much for goalies but its worth entertaining the idea.

Its not that straightforward to pin the wins and losses on either goalie, there are too many variables like who is playing the tougher opponents or how much goal support they're getting.

Peterson has his moments, but im not sure that he is the answer.

I’d rather trade for an elite goalie right now so that in a few years, he can come in an challenge whoever we have. I’d give an awful lot for a guy like Wallstedt or Knight. Even Wolf, still so annoyed we didn’t select him.

If Calgary is in Win now Wolf could have the lowest acquisition cost. He could end up being the next Labarbera though too.
There will be guys available, the trade for Campbell was a good move and when Calgary picked up Vladar from Boston it reminded me of it.
Goalies are so difficult to predict and project.
