I am always amazed just how underrated/under-appreciated Kopitar is by so many Kings fans. I remember watching other teams have guys like Fedorov, Yzerman, Sakic and Modano and thinking how lucky those fans were. Then we get a guy who was pretty damn close to that level, a true game-changing 200 foot star 1C from the moment he stepped on NHL ice as a teenager. He was the biggest reason this franchise was able to climb to a level that many here thought would never happen, not once but twice. But now towards the end there are just some weird weird takes. Worship of players who were never close to being as good as Kopitar on those cup teams are given more credit? Players who aren’t close to what AK was are compared as equals.
When Kopitar was 21 the Kings were horrible, a bottom 5 roster in the league, he was the #1 C and lead the team in scoring by 7 points over the 2nd place guy and 13 over third. The Kings finished 3rd to last with 207 goals, of which Kopitar scored or assisted on 32% of them. No, somebody who is 4th in scoring, playing with better line mates and a less challenging position accounting for 24% of the teams goals is not the same thing. It was also a much less offensive oriented league then, Kopitar finished 45th in scoring, Byfield currently sits at 91. Using just raw numbers to try and compare the two at 21 would be like doing the same with Kirk Cousins and John Elway.
My hope is that when it’s over for AK, and again I hope it’s sooner than later, there will be more of an awakening to just how great he was, from the moment he stepped on the ice for this team, and the weird attempts to compare him to lesser players, which have gone on here for years will stop and people will appreciate what we got to witness for these almost 2 decades.
It’s probably going to be a long long long time until we ever have a player as good as AK was.
