In those situations you have two star rfas who were instant on bonus heavy contract structures. There's not much manuvering around that if thats what the team has decided to do to get a guy signed.

The Leafs have engaged in some fairly complex cap/contract manuvering, between things like the high number of paper transactions they do with Marlies guys to grow daily capspace, to things like the 2019 Clarkson trade

I think NHL brass faun over these cap guru's because for the most part they are all high school educated former players with no Uni experience. All it would take is a good accountant to be good at it. It's numbers and legal loopholes. Not rocket biology
