Treiliving is definitely a downgrade from Dubas. It's not just the Tkachuk deal. He let Johnny Hockey walk for nothing. He gave away Bennett for nothing. Used a 1st to dump Monahan. Gave up a bunch of picks to rent Jarknkrok. Etc.

He's bad. Really bad.

Seems really on par with what we know. Dubas had plenty of blunders just as bad... and I'm a fan of Dubas. But I don't think it's fair to say what Treliving did and had to do was terrible in comparison in retrospect.

Gotta look at the good as well if you want a better picture though. Go through his drafts and look at the trades that netted them good players. There's a lot of good there.

But I agree on paper it's a downgrade probably.

Dubas did everything he could under salary constraints, starting with hiring the best cap specialist in the league in Brandon Pridham to make the figures fit. Trades as bold as Fletcher or any other GM were made, costing major draft capital. But the scouting department Dubas remodeled was uncovering secondary picks such as Matthew Knies and Nick Robertson.

The agents for many veteran NHLers had Dubas on speed dial, impressed by the details in rehab, travel comforts, nutrition, sports science, high performance and of course, analytics.

Dubas also made internal moves to make the Leafs brand more inclusive to non-traditional fans from different demographics and those in the LBGTQ community.

Once skeptical fans had begun to embrace Dubas, a bit more, too. Despite a one-sided series loss to the Florida Panthers, the Leafs at least won a round for the first time in 19 years and public fury shifted mostly to Keefe and the Core Four.

A contract extension for Dubas was in the works until relations with Shanahan inexplicably fell apart the past couple of days.

“I have to think about how do we want to get where we want to go in the future,” Shanahan said. “What are the best ways for us to be better, what are the new ideas and new thoughts?

“We’ve built something here. A lot of people are shocked and saddened. But we also have a lot of people coming back to work and getting ready to do the work they’re paid to do.”

In the end, Dubas changed the look of the Leafs, but not their empty trophy case.

That's the thing, for every bad move Dubas made he made a good move, and vice versa. But I can't think of too many unequivocally good moves that Treliving has made. Was Markstrom his pickup? That'd be one.

So Shanny wants someone who is experienced after hiring Dubas who was what 26 at the time? My ass.

I think this experience condition is a mandate from the board after watching this shit show for 8 years.

I just wonder with all this angst and rending of garments; did anyone actually think this team looked like a contender at any time this year? There might have been a slight hope they could fraud their way to a cup after beating Tampa but Florida sure as f*** brought reality back in a hurry. The future looked bleak as hell after that panthers loss. The rest of our division was only getting stronger while the top teams like Boston and Tampa and probably us are on the decline.
Feels like Kyle was just going to run it out one more time and it probably would have been a sad sight.

Markstrom was his pickup. So was Lindholm, Coleman, Vadar, Zadorov, Hanifin, Toffoli,... He drafted Bennett, Tkachuk, Mangiapane, Andersson, Fox, Dube and Coronato of note that are clear NHLers.

Kadri’s 7 year contract at 31 years of age is horrific as his Lucic acquisition. His handling of Gaudreau and Chucky is so egregious that he should never be a in a front office of any team in any capacity.
What was he supposed to do with Johnny. You have a good team arguably a mid-tier contender but your star doesn't want to sign with you? He made a choice and his goaltender failed him.

Yea, stay consistent with a management group that was consistent with 1st rd exits and playoff failures
Well, I think that part has been taken care of, no? But having a guy or two would not be the end of the world. At the same time, I don't care if anyone stays. But for the new guy in charge, having someone there just to be familiar with some of the stuff would not be a bad thing.

He traded Hamilton and Fox through for Lindholm and Hanifin, so I can't exactly praise him there. And he gave up a 1st for Toffoli.

More egregiously bad moves in there than good tbh. Although I like him emphasizing toughness.

True, they do love the juicy stories! I moreso meant the uncertainty of being coddled.
I know what you meant, i just dont think its true. The media has been kn good terms with the GM for all of Shanny's tenure. Whether that be Nonis, Dubas/Hunter, Lou or Dubas again.

My reading of it is Shanny severely misjudged how unsettled Dubas' likely was about a few things - family stuff, lack of extension in place maybe ect. Dubas probably more upset than anticipated hence the blow up at the initial media presser.

The fact that Shanny has been physically distant for much of the season (he lives in NYC) probably helped cloud the relationship

Why was an unsettled GM so willing to get in front of the media? A little bit unprofessional in hindsight.
