Not exactly that but when Punch Imlach came back for a second time he kind of went to war against the players. Sittler I believe asked out but instead Lanny McDonald and Tiger Williams got traded thus breaking up the band. Sittler eventually got his wish although I think Imlach wasn't really running things by then.
Actually, Sittler had a NTC at the time, which is what made Punch angry (Imlach was very much of the old school "I should be able to trade whoever I want whenever I want" mindset), but due to that Punch couldn't trade him without his say-so. So Punch traded Lanny and Tiger specifically tp piss Sittler off enough to get him to waive his NTC.

President finally morphs out of p***y mode and now you want him fired?????
I was just going to say where was this Shanahan for the longest time? He shut that down pretty quick. Where was the guy who said this isn’t for everyone and sacrifices have to be made. Nice to see a bit of that again.

Let me get this straight... You put Kyle into a lame duck situation. He impressed you throughout the season and playoffs. Then because he didn't sign on the dotted line right when you wanted him to, you decided he wasn't the right guy for the job anymore? All within a matter of 48-72hrs?

Shanny needs to be fired now. Dubas wanted to be the GM, he wanted Dubas to be GM, and he let his emotions get in the way of making the right decision.

Truly pathetic stuff from Shanny.

Kyle earned the right to take whatever time he wanted (within reason). He gambled on himself, and won. f*** off MLSE and f*** off Shanny.
If you listened to Shanahan you would have heard him say that after the presser on a Monday he was as concerned if Kyle really wanted to be there, in his discussions with Kyle that was the case given he hadn’t heard from him until Wednesday. Letting him wait in addition to what he conveyed in the presser planted a seed of doubt, then when Dubas came back with a new counter offer I think Shanahan finally pushed him to really think about this decision. It wasn’t just the one day it was the lack of commitment by Dubas after already committing to signing him with a new deal… tell me what president or owner would still sign Dubas after that spinning 72 hrs

How last minute is it? His contract wasn't up for another month.

I'm not asking anything of the executive other than to make decisions about the hockey branch, about hockey. Shanny going from being all systems go on this guy after the Florida series to firing him over ambiguity expressed in a press interview and the optics and soft skills of tending a renegotiated offer does not inspire me that this was a hockey decision. Is my read unreasonable?

You want to go in a different direction, fine, I'm not married to the guy, but one thing's certain, and that's that I will jump off an overpass before I go back to cheering for the JFJ, Richard Peddie, Brandon Burke version of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and this feels like a play out of that book, just straight YOLOing it.
Very last minute IMO, I expect terms to basically be solidified if hes speaking with an offer in hand after the season, especially if they started in season with his agent.

I understand your read, but part of icing the right team is leading. Leading in negotiations and as the Manager of the team.

It still feels like something is missing from this story to me, especially with Shannys "not about money" comments.

Partly a matter of money, partly a wrestle for power, people can and will debate for years how this played out and which exact version of events they want to believe, but the bottom line is that Dubas is out as Leafs GM after five years.

Maybe we’ll look back in years and say this was a bold and brilliant pivot from Shanahan after seeing what he perceived as red flags in Dubas’ hesitance or contract counter. Or maybe it’ll go down as one of the organization’s great blunders to let this 37-year-old GM go.

And there will be time for Dubas, too, to look back at whether he overplayed his hand.

No one has that answer yet.

...........

“Came in as a young GM, was very respectful with his peers,” Bergevin said. “Montreal and Toronto are the most pressure markets in the NHL, for sure. Passionate fan bases.”

Here’s what they said.

Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen: “I have the utmost respect for Kyle, both as a professional and as a person. He’s always a straight shooter to deal with. No bulls—. Just an all-around really good person and a professional. All our discussions were straightforward and analytical. I think he has a very thorough approach to everything; you have to be prepared when you talk to him because he’s going to look at things from every angle. I have a lot of respect for him.”

Oilers GM Ken Holland: “Very bright young man. Very respectful. I thought he did a great job in his time running the Leafs, having them near the top of the standings every year.”

Panthers GM Bill Zito: “Obviously, a very bright man. And a guy that I have a lot of faith in his character. He’s a guy you could do a deal with. And if it wasn’t papered, you could tell the (player) go ahead get on the plane. As an agent, we used to say if you did a deal with a GM and you didn’t have a contract back yet, would you send your player on the plane? That’s a level of respect I have for Kyle’s integrity. Obviously, I’m very fond of him. I think he did a hell of a job there.”

Outgoing Predators GM David Poile: “I think Kyle is one of the finest young minds in hockey. I really enjoyed getting to know him. He was a great contributor at the GM (meetings) level. Always good to talk to on the phone on hockey and GM things, players. Very impressed with Kyle every time I talked to him.”

Hurricanes team president and GM Don Waddell: “Kyle is a very smart person. Being in a tougher media market, he doesn’t allow the pressure to affect his decisions.”

Former Flames GM Brad Treliving: “Kyle is a smart, calculated and thoughtful manager, and he did a good job.”

And finally, when reaching out to Lightning GM Julien BriseBois, he referred me to the comment he gave me after the first round of the playoffs when the Leafs beat Tampa Bay and I asked him about Dubas and the Leafs finally winning a playoff series.

“Kyle has done a remarkable job from the day he was promoted to GM,” BriseBois told me on April 29. “He and his management team never leave any stone unturned. They are always grinding and coming up with creative ways to move their team forward. He has been bold and resolute in a very challenging environment in which to act thusly.

“The stars finally aligned for him to be rewarded for all of his great work with a playoff series win. Good for him.”

They are playing public opinion. They are media companies with a Sports franchise hanging in the balance. Relax. Dubas was probably always gone and contingencies in place.

You're correct. I actually read Punch Imlach's book too. I should have remembered that correctly. It was very upsetting at the time being a young fan although I eventually became a fan of Wilf Paiement, Rick Vaive and Billy Derlago.

I think they both blew it. Dubas didn't need to speak at all, let alone air out his grievances about his family. Shanahan is going into unnecessary detail as well though and should have prepared better for this moment
Shanahan told Dubas Not to speak on Monday, but he did. So Shanahan was fully transparent, had he not been you would posting your dissatisfaction about not understanding what happened and wanting more details. He gave you the full story, now it’s too much… really?

It's a privilege being part of the Toronto Maple Leafs...Dubas made it sound like it was a burden at his presser. Any sane person looking at that will have doubts. Shanny made the right decision letting Dubas go.

Ownership letting him go to the end of the season as a lame duck really opened things up for this to happen
Did you listen to the full presser? Shanahan had a verbal agreement with Dubas after trade deadline that they wanted him back as GM. And reiterated that just before the Monday presser… what happened was Dubas either navigating through the media for leverage or simply wasn’t sure if he wanted to be back because of his family, Shanahan saw that as hesitation to commit to the job and then with a counter offer, the whole thing seemed suspect. Time to move on
