TBH I’m ready to move on from Shanny too with how things have been handled
This doesn't look good on Shanny because of his tenure with the organization, but I think the end result was because Dubas blindsided him and the MLSE board at the eleventh hour.

I have been on both sides. One party asks for money, you say can say no or you can bump your offer.
Apparently on Sunday after a couple of months of negotiation they were cool Dubas had the job, come Monday however there was a sudden family complication,

and the words "I don't know if I want the best job in hockey right now" were uttered.

Thursday an email came to Shanny that basically said "mo money solves the family complication, so mo money we cool again bro.

Do you see it now, it's really transparent.

Had Dubas kept his mouth shut, he may not of gotten the money but he would of still had the job.

Toronto Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan Details Timeline of Events That Led to Kyle Dubas' Dismissal as General Manager - The Hockey News

Did this simply fall apart over money?

Shanahan said wouldn't say it was about money and felt that after Dubas' news conference with the media on the money he was "less sure" about the future of the GM position.

"I hadn't ruled Kyle Dubas out but I had to make sure I was thinking of other options."

What will the new GM look like?

Shanahan said he will keep an open mind as the search begins for a new GM but added one thing that Dubas did not have.

"Certainly, having an experienced general manager would be an attractive quality."

The search for a new GM for the Maple Leafs begins immediately. He wouldn't rule out anybody.

What role did the Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment's Board of Directors have in making a decision on Dubas?

Shanahan said he communicated his thoughts with the board but it was ultimately his decision. "They were supportive. That is my job and my job is to make recommendations for them and that was my recommendation and decision."

What does the removal of Dubas mean for the future of Sheldon Keefe and other staff?

Shanahan says that those decisions should be the responsibility of the new GM. That means you likely won't see any clarity on that until a new person is in place. In the interim, Shanahan said he will lean heavily on Pridham.

He has already had talks with Director of Amateur Scouting Wes Clark about how to approach the upcoming NHL draft in June.

Whatever happens though, it doesn't sound like the foundation will change much without Dubas. At least, that's how Shanahan sees it.

"We've built something here," Shanahan said. "We have a lot of people coming back to work and doing their jobs and getting ready to do the things they were paid to do and that was encouraging."

Shanahan expressed an "urgency" to give a new GM in place but to not have a hasty process. "I want to be thoughtful and thorough and it needs to happen rather soon."

What does this mean for the future of the Core Four?

In his last availability with the media, Kyle Dubas essentially left everything on the table for change at any level. That included the core four forwards of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander.

That philosophy was echoed by Shanahan.

"Just being different doesn't solve something," he said. "Me removing Kyle isn't the solution. It's finding that is a better fit that is a solution and it's the same on the ice."

Dubas' side of the story unknown

Given the raw nature of the news, it's unlikely we hear from Dubas' side of the story until at least after his contract expires on June 30.

The point where I jump on the Shana-wagon is where, if the story is 100% true, there was a basic agreement at the trade deadline, and then, all of a sudden, Dubas’ family becomes a major factor And has to be considered.

If it was a major sticking point to Dubas, his family concerns should have been mentioned and worked into the equation at the TDL, not thrown into the media at zero hour. So either, on Monday, he was lying about the reasons for waffling OR he completely missed the boat 3 months ago.

Dubas blew it, Shanahan called him on it, and that was that.

Didn't Kyle say that he didn't want to be gm of any other team? What is the problem with him expressing that he needs to take some time and have some conversations with this family, when he was without contract? When he was installed as a lame duck gm for the last year with a team that clearly expressed that they, too, were unsure if the relationship was tenable until the dust settled after playoffs?

From an outside perspective, it seems that Dubas is coming across as the bad guy here for wearing his heart on his sleeve a little, but he made it clear that he didn't want to work for any other org. If this was a player having these discussions, it would be par for the course, no? I feel like Shanahan and the leafs are pulling the wool over the eyes of everyone and it's gotten all of the media and fanbase to pile on Dubas unfairly.

That press conference was not that big of a deal in my opinion, and is being leveraged for something that it wasn't.

No disrespect, but that's not exactly what the press conference indicated

The board, and Shanny wanted to extend Kyle at the conclusion of the Trade Deadline. Kyle said he did not want that to distract from the team at the time, and that Shanny should deal with his agent. There as a mutual interest at this point. Shanny then expressed at the conclusion of the season that despite the disappointing ending to the season, that Kyle did a good job and that he wanted to extend him. Kyle was again still interested, but wanted to talk to his family about it. Kyle has his press conference, and does not give Shanny an immediate answer on his offer. Keep in mind, Kyle went into the season as a lame duck GM, and does not owe Shanny f*** all. Kyle then counters 3 days later, and Shanny feels hard done by and decides to move on.

Shanny and the board felt like Kyle was the right man to continue the job as of Monday.... This same group that had decided to wait till this moment in time to even offer Kyle an extension becasue they wanted him to be "judged on his entire 5 years as GM". Yet they changed their minds in a matter of 5 days???

This is bush league managing from MLSE and Shanny. If your feelings were hurt by Kyle's counter demands, maybe don't f***ing back yourself into a corner like you did by taking your GM into his last year of his deal when you have one of the busiest off-season's to date coming up. Not exactly a position of leverage. Or better yet, maybe if you just extended him for a short term deal last off season, you wouldn't be in this f***ing mess now to begin with.

Again, if Shanny came out and said: "Kyle is not the guy for the Job. We need a new voice, and a new set of eyes". I would respect that, and I would accept that decision. But that's not what happened. Shanny made an emotional decision and let go of a guy he's believed to be the right guy for the job for 5+ years, and as recent as 4 days ago.
Shanny basically said that. After seeing Kyle's presser, he changed his opinion and you gotta let the guy do that. We always alter our beliefs when new evidence is presented.

Shanahan wanted Dubas as the guy. But Dubas comes out and says basically, you know what I don't know if I can commit to this team or if I still want to be GM.

Once he said that, Shanahan basically made his decision like alright we need someone here with a clear vision and plan who is committed to making this team into a cup winner.

I don't take what people like Shanahan say at face value.

For all we know he wasn't going to be extended. This was a narrative that was worked out that would preserve Kyle's reputation and explain Shanahan's reasoning. This is what I actually believe to be what happened here.

You believe Kyle Dubas would put his family's name into the mouth of the media all for the sake of saving face, for optics? That's the kind of guy he strikes you as? There's no need to build a road here, he was already not offered an extension last year, the lane is paved and lit. Preserve his reputation? Have you read this thread?

>I don't think there is much risk at all with the contracts so long as Pridham is made acting GM. He is very competent and excellent with the numbers. Hunter could be brought in, Shanahan could also oversee it himself.

>I don't believe there will be a remarkable difference in contract negotiations or draft considerations. It's simply a changing of the guard.

This isn't about signing a contract or drafting a couple kids, it's about properly valuing and making a decision on a 100pt Selke finalist in a very narrow window of time. That decision is going to have a legacy 10 years long. And you fire the GM a month before? Fire him afterwards, holy shit.

You and me both.

I've been a glass half-full guy myself...but this revelation (as a couple of my posts indicate) is a watershed moment writ large.

And I'm elated Shanahan did a "Waaaaaaait a minute." just when we needed it. Just when we couldn't afford another moment of it.

Maybe there's light at the end of this after all.

I think Dubas got a false sense that he's buddy-buddy with Shanahan as he is with the players...you can't be offered the job of GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs and say you'll talk to your wife and think about it, literally infront of everyone...it's either you're all in or you're not...worse part is, he discloses to the press and all the fans about his doubts of returning when all he needs to do is talk to Shanahan directly. And Dubas made it far worse by keeping everyone in the dark for a few days, then coming back with a counter offer for more money. That's some amateur negotiation tactics there.

What I really don't like about this is he cited his family in public, his wife by name, and put the spotlight on them, and made Toronto look like the looney bin in a negotiation where he could have expressed the family pressures, made the contract demands all quietly to a president he's got a decade of history with. Why spotlight your family like that if they were struggling with the pressures of the job?
Especially to do that after Shanahan suggested he not speak to the media at all. He could have been a leader and re-established a sense of cohesion and instead chose to throw a grenade on everything to try and get more money. Bye, rat

Says the single person with no kids.

maybe his wife threatened divorce if he accepted the new contract. Who knows?

I strongly suspect that Dubas has other offers on the table in smaller media markets.

You know what we dont know the story. You are right.

But if the wifey asks for a divorce that can't be last minute. And why would'nt you go to pla Shanny and tell him this is it for you?

From how it has played now we know it wasn't about family and it was about $$$.

I'm with you there.

Funny that Dubas tenure here ends by absolutely botching a negotiation, quite fitting to how it started.

Its safe to say Keefe is out right?

You are cleaning house with Dubas clutter might as well get rid of the guy behind the bench to start a new culture.
Keefe should follow Spezza’s example and resign, but he won’t……..
