Guys going to be a hockey pariah, you don’t pull that shit and get many more chances imo…….

If I have my Leaf history and Machiavellian playbook right, this seemed likely there was a coup attempt from the GM level up. Consolidate enough hockey making decision autonomy and hefty salary to match, build a front office loyal to your vision, get the public on side, short circuit Brendan Shanahan.

This happened when coach Pat Quinn won his board room struggle vs GM Mike Smith, assumed the dual portfolio and then ousted Ken Dryden as president. The way everyone from Babcock, Hunter to Lamoriello were all ousted following the job offer from Colorado would suggest there's some interesting stories to be told in hardcover form one day once the dust has settled.

Re-watching Shanahan , and the thing that I find astounding, is he only learns that Dubas is unsure of returning at a media event. They talked the day prior, many times after the season, and Dubas drops this bomb in front of the press. What the actual f*** is that? How professional or “ethical” is that move? It’s unreal.

The antidubasite posters have been right all along. To find out that he is a scumbag that used the family card to try to extort more money out of the guy who gave him a start and his dream job shows me what kind of character the guy has. But feel free to follow the great Dubas cause he is going to win a cup or 3 elsewhere.
Not really. There was a lot of praise for Dubas and a desire to bring him back by Shannahan. There was a last minute issue with financial terms and they decided not to bring him back. The 5 years of persistent whining from some members of antidubasite crowed ( which like the Dubasites is not a real thing) couldn't possibly have known that there would be a financial disagreement at the end of his contract. As for any Dubasites that whine about the any new GM, give them 5 years and see if they turn out to be right.

Especially to do that after Shanahan suggested he not speak to the media at all. He could have been a leader and re-established a sense of cohesion and instead chose to throw a grenade on everything to try and get more money. Bye, rat
Nothing wrong with speaking to the media Monday. Just do not be stupid when you do it.

Guess those who were hoping for the team to be radically changed to build a winner just got hosed. 'Cause it definitely ain't happening in time with nobody in place to do it...

A happy accident...

I think what transpired was actually revelatory, and perhaps for Shanahan as well.

I disagree with one member who said Shanahan is now scrambling. Firstly because Shanahan indicated that as soon as Dubas publicly stated his uncertainty (for any of the reasons provided) he began to think about alternatives - still committed and apparently waiting for confirmation from Dubas' side, but, thinking instantly about the best alternatives for the Maple Leafs. That indicates profoundly detached deliberation.

Shanahan also indicated he'll be working with Pridham, that there's a great system in place, and that they are preparing as they normally do.

I can't help but wonder, if what Shanahan didn't voice was the same, "...wait...wait a minute..." realization some of us surely experienced that Kyle Dubas sounded like a very talented spoiled brat who hadn't achieved a thing but was manipulating leverage as though he did and behaved in a somewhat confrontational "in control of the situation" fashion.

Does it ever ring familiar.

The issue though is this revelation happened just a few days ago same with the plan developing. I'm going to hope for the best, but late May isn't exactly the optimal time to completely revamp what your offseason plans are

Keefe should follow Spezza’s example and resign, but he won’t……..
He's under contract for another year, and would forfeit next year's salary if he resigns instead of getting fired.

It's very, very unlikely that Keefe will be coaching the Leafs again.

Unlike Spezza, he doesn't have tens of millions of career earnings to fall back on.

You know what we dont know the story. You are right.

But if the wifey asks for a divorce that can't be last minute. And why would'nt you go to pla Shanny and tell him this is it for you?

From how it has played now we know it wasn't about family and it was about $$$.
Not entirely. Shanahan was asked if it was solely about money in the presser, to which he replied no.

I think by the time Dubas got back to him, Shanahan's mind was already made up.

I just hope Shanahan finds a better replacement.

590 are eviscerating Dubas “used your kids as pawns”
I defended Dubas after his press conference and thought he was being genuine. If that was really the case, he would have contacted Shanahan to state that he's ready to finalize the framework of their previous contract negotiations. To ask for more money and more autonomy after speaking to his family just reiterates that his comments to the media were in fact a negotiating ploy.

I fell for it and so did many others. I have lost respect for Dubas as a result.

It would not surprise me in the least if Dubas is hired very soon by another club despite his loyal proclamation on Monday that it's Toronto or nothing in the foreseeable future.

Hahaha say goodbye to all the players that want to come here!!!

Matthews and Nylander likely as good as gone when they refuse to re-sign in a few weeks. Marner to follow next season and we'll be forced to sell for peanuts. Joke organization squeezed all the goodwill out.
Then all three will be traded before July 1st. A new core will emerge.

I just had an interesting thought....what if Dubas had an offer from say Pittsburg and he had to "discuss" the move with his wife before accepting then decided to take a wild stab at doubling his pay & stay with the Leafs ....except Shanny said no. If he latches onto Pittsburg or Ottawa we'll know how conniving that dramatical farce really was....

I’ll give it to Shanadan, no Ides of March outcome for him this time…….

Anyone wanna point to a post where someone might have outlined what he said or do a brief summar: coles notes version? I am just getting home

thanks in advance!

I don't know where Spezza fits into all this. He was a nice veteran soldier on the ice and a rookie in the front office staff but hardly a mover and shaker in his own right.

Is it a measure of the schism in the organization?
It will be interesting to see if any others follow suit.
