Consolidate enough hockey making decision autonomy and hefty salary to match, build a front office loyal to your vision, get the public on side, short circuit Brendan Shanahan.
This happened when coach Pat Quinn won his board room struggle vs GM Mike Smith, assumed the dual portfolio and then ousted Ken Dryden as president. The way everyone from Babcock, Hunter to Lamoriello were all ousted following the job offer from Colorado would suggest there's some interesting stories to be told in hardcover form one day once the dust has settled.
