This isn't about being easier to do a job, it's about stress on his family which was the reason for potentially not coming back in the first place, which also won't be relieved by more money.

He used the money excuse to try and leverage more money.

What did his wife say "I hate you doing this job but if you make 25% more I'll be good"?
No, if it came down to the money, he probably said: "I have enough money that I don't need this job, the stress that comes from working for the Leafs and their garbage fans, and unless I get paid more I'll look elsewhere when I'm ready."

It would be a colossial f*** up by the organization letting him go over money when you are still paying for the dumb mistake calle Babcock. What it feels like to me was that the longer this went on the more Shanny felt that someone else should head the team. Sounds like his desire to have Dubas back changed in the final minutes the more used to the idea he got.

Based on the presser, it seems like they thought it was a done deal until 3PM on Monday.

They'd been working on this for months.

That's part of the problem - as we just saw nothing is a done deal until ink has dried on paper. Shanny/MLSE should have known the risks of letting this stuff go to the last minute

uh huh. Don't believe for a second you watched Amirov to come up with any sort of meaningful opinion.

I'm guessing you seen the nationality and size and went "omg he's soft".

Drafting based on need is some smoothed brain thinking for sure. BPA all day.
Great, then you still take Schenider.

he's unsure about what he wants to do or if he even wants to do his job anymore.
He definitely wanted the job but on his terms only. Knowing full well the media campaign against MLSE/Shanny using his family, "I'm your best chance to sign Matthews", etc.

"don't believe your own bullshit"

For everything Shanny did for Dubas, Dubas pulling this stunt is telling. Like I said, a wolf is sheep's clothing.

Dubas knows hockey but he showed a complete inability to negotiate.
The fact he played a card he didn't have during his negotiations and Shanny called his bluff isn't a surprise.

He's still going to get a job down the road. Maybe he wants out of Toronto like everyone else.

Matthews - overpaid to stay.
Marner - huge overpay to stay.
Tavares - sweetheart deal to have a family in Toronto.

Genuinely curious, where can I find the salaries of all NHL GMs? How does an offer of 4 million/year compare to those of other GMs? Will Kyle get a comparable amount or more if he were employed by another organization?
Toronto definitely pays more than most. So, this will come back to bite Dubas in the ass.

Carolina for example got into a big controversy a while back because they were only willing to pay their GM' 400K/year lol. Dubas won't like what he finds out there vs. what the leafs offered him I can guarantee that.

Everybody keeps saying Pridham but does anybody have any idea what his thoughts are on how to build a team? We just want to hand him the keys cause he knows the staff? What are his actual hockey ideas? Is there any interviews where he talks about that?
Sounded to me, unless Shanahan cannot find someone with experience, no chance Pridham gets the gig.

I have not ever seen an interview with the man, to be honest.

Where was this hardball when negotiating on behalf of the Leafs?

MLSE let things get to this stage in the first place. They should have made decisions before they had their preferred choice publicly negotiating with them at the last minute
IMO, Dubas hadn't done anything to deserve a contract extension prior to the team finally winning that round against Tampa (and I do appreciate his role in that). Unfortunately, it appears as though Dubas proceeded to then ask for the moon in the aftermath of that series win.

That’s fine. Shanahan’s his boss and within his discretion to say yes or no.

Insane that you'd hire someone to manage a team and then do it yourself.

If this is the case, I guess Dubas may be a good or bad GM and we will never know.

MLSE just finished paying mike babcock 20 million dollars to sit at home, and basically invented Robidas Island. This shouldn't be about money in the slightest.
True, but we hear alot of leaf fans say hey, we have buckets of money, and this should fix everything, and here we are.....
Power at the top is where this all broke down, The ShanaPlan has hit a real snag.

After hearing Shanahan's version of the story, I believe he made the right call.

Dubas didn't demonstrate a firm commitment to staying here quick enough. Once he planted the seed of doubt in Shanahan's mind and the MLSE board, he sealed his fate in Toronto.

Let's move forward with a GM that is 100% committed to being here with no baggage.

I'm sure Dubas will land on his feet soon enough and have a solid career, but it wasn't meant to be in Toronto.

Boy, I appreciate Shannahan for providing detailed information and the timeline of the events. There seems to be feelings hurt both ways but if what Shannahan is saying is true, I think he handled this just find.

Kyle Dubas was brought from the Soo by Shanny and was given all the resources to develop under one of the best GMs to ever have managed. He was given his dream job and was given all the resources needed to do well. Despite a severe lack of playoff success, upon conclusion of the season the the organization still intended to bring him back. Kyle planted a seed of doubt on his commitment by playing the family card, and then when he did decide that he wants to continue on (which I believe he always wanted to do), he asked for more money to continue on.

I have no sources to back this up, but if I am to guess, Kyle knew that the free agency of Matthews and Nylander upcoming are enough to instill some panic within the organization with the need to show stability, and could be taken advantage off in order to negotiate a more attractive deal for himself, as I'm sure he's developed a strong relationship with these guys.

If anything, this doesn't paint a very classy exit for Dubas, but that's just my opinion.

Guy is an opportunist. I get it.

But once that’s revealed after barely getting past rd 1 for 6 years…

You don’t care about the team.
You only care for $

This idiot was also the one who wasted 3 years with speed and skill ONLy.

Took him years to finally realize men play this sport. Not undersized figure skaters.

Speaking of which, we need to trade Marner
