Boy, I appreciate Shannahan for providing detailed information and the timeline of the events. There seems to be feelings hurt both ways but if what Shannahan is saying is true, I think he handled this just find.

Kyle Dubas was brought from the Soo by Shanny and was given all the resources to develop under one of the best GMs to ever have managed. He was given his dream job and was given all the resources needed to do well. Despite a severe lack of playoff success, upon conclusion of the season the the organization still intended to bring him back. Kyle planted a seed of doubt on his commitment by playing the family card, and then when he did decide that he wants to continue on (which I believe he always wanted to do), he asked for more money to continue on.

I have no sources to back this up, but if I am to guess, Kyle knew that the free agency of Matthews and Nylander upcoming are enough to instill some panic within the organization with the need to show stability, and could be taken advantage off in order to negotiate a more attractive deal for himself, as I'm sure he's developed a strong relationship with these guys.

If anything, this doesn't paint a very classy exit for Dubas, but that's just my opinion.

Kyle earned the right to ask whatever the f*** he wanted. Lets not forget this was the gamble MLSE and Brendon made him take. They could have easily resigned him last season when he earned it then as well. But because they were to chicken shit to face the public and extend a GM after a failed season, there we were on Monday.

MLSE doesn't give a f*** about money. It was never about money. It was about Shanny getting ass hurt by a guy his junior, who strung him along on a decision that he put Kyle into in the first place.

Make no mistake, this is Shanny essentially saying "I'm the boss", that's it. He let his ego get in the way of the right decision. I could get behind that if Shanny was the straw that stirred the drink for this team, but what the f*** has that guy done for this team lately?? we've not even heard from him all year until today.

MLSE should be embarrassed TBH
With what success did he earn the right to ask for whatever?
timeline
1. they had a deal in place effectively
2. dubas says he wants to do a presser..shanny advises against it.
3. dubas says a bunch of stuff to the media that he didnt tell shanny
4. dubas demands more money on the pretense of "family"

ye, this aint on shanny

very unprofessional by dubas.
And now people are mad becuase there isn’t a plan B. Dubas screwed them around like he screwed the fans around for 5 years.

In what regard? Sending an email instead of a phone call? Marginal. Asking for more money due to work life balance? Completely mundane. Being ambiguous about his contractual status in the press? Ryan O'Reilly just did that. It's a sports team. The contracts are public record. It's a conspicuous thing to be questioned about.

He used the media in an attempt to strong arm Shanny and the Leafs board to get what he wanted. If he was truly unhappy with the offer he received that should have been communicated in private.

truly f***ing mind numbing.

Shanny needs to be terminated immediately. He let his ego get in the way of the right decision. Kyle was strong armed last season and took it like the pro he is/was. Shanny then gets it returned a year later and Shanny files a hurt feelings report.
Shanny went to the end in his contract year, manned up and signed back. Apparently, Dubas couldn't handle it, too hard on his mental wellbeing. Adios!

The mental gymnastics that must be occurring in your head to acknowledge last season was a, and I quote you own words, "failed season" but also in the same breath say Dubas earned the right to ask for whatever he wanted.

Truly remarkable.

it sounds like Shanahan decided to move on because Dubas was unsure that he wanted to return. That doesn’t send a very positive message. At that stage Shanahan already started making calls and got some leads on a replacement and he decided to proceed with the replacement options.

none of that is petty. He just didn’t think Dubas wanted the job. So he had to move on.

Dubas comes off really bad here. And it makes me wwwaaaayyyy more comfortable he’s gone. Loser.
That is if you accept Shannys narrative.

Now if you are Dubas you must interview for work inn the future cautiously, "it was all a misuderstanding". He has to make it water under the bridge if he wants to GM in the NHL.

No. You missed the part where I said without hindsight.

Amirov was the wrong kind of player (another skilled but small/soft winger). It was even worse when Schenider, exactly who the Leafs needed, was available. I said it at the time too. So miss me with that bullshit
uh huh. Don't believe for a second you watched Amirov to come up with any sort of meaningful opinion.

I'm guessing you seen the nationality and size and went "omg he's soft".

Drafting based on need is some smoothed brain thinking for sure. BPA all day.

It sounds like Shannahan did not like what he heard from Kyle Dubas at the press conference.

I sympathize with a lot of what Kyle said, but Shannahan does have something of a point in that you probably can't have a guy at the helm of a ship who doesn't appear to really want to be there. I like that Kyle is open about the pressures of the job, but you ultimately need someone to steward the team who won't be encumbered by a public bout of burnout.

This strikes me as a story where we may never have the complete details, at least not so long as Shannahan and Dubas continue to pursue executive positions in professional sports. Both guys are savvy enough to keep it clean.

Not sure what to think beyond that.

Dude, he fake cried about it being about his family. Asking for more money makes him lose all credibility.

Imo Dubas was the disaster. His profession doesn't get easier somewhere else.

I'm not sure I follow. Apparently, Kyle said, "I need to talk about this with my family. I have talked about it with my family. I would like to continue to do it." This is the managerial equivalent of two for flinching.

Impressed. I thought Shanny had gone soft over these years. Clearly not.

I still remember the Red Wedding back in 2015. When he fired everyone. I mean everyone

I thought then that we finally have someone with cut throat attitude

Imo they opened this up to happen by trying to sort out an extension essentially here at the last minute.

They expected Dubas to play ball and it seemingly backfired since he probably (for better or worse) had a chip on his shoulder about a few issues
He's also an idiot if he thinks he can make more money elsewhere. Management is the one thing the Leafs can outspend anyone not called the Rangers and maybe a couple teams who are aggressive could justify spending in our ball park.

I feel this just shows Dubas was pretty unprofessional, which is something I was told years ago (he leveraged to get the job in the first place to force out Lou, that time Shanahan bought it). I don't think he's done close to enough to try to hold the team ransom. We've went one round further than we did prior to him being the head honcho, despite significant growth from multiple players who he inherited when they were breaking through. This isn't a Masai Ujiri situation where he had every right to ask for the moon.
