Wow, that certainly was a interesting and bizarre series of events. Seemed like everyone was on the same page before that press conference on Monday, and Dubas comments changed Shanahans mind about feeling comfortable about being the GM.

I don't think the ask in more money really changed anything, the damage was done before that.

Damn. That was a lot more open than I expected it to be. Firstly, it sounds like Dubas did actually want to come back and Shanny decided he didn't like the vibe at the last minute and nixed it. I do not like that. I'm honestly not even sure what really changed his mind, he kept kinda glossing over it, but it HAD to be the press conference? Even though he said he had no issues with it lol.

What I do like is listening to Shanny talk. Makes me feel confident that he appreciated the way the organization was run, and he's going to be looking for an individual that holds similar values. Makes me think even though he said 'experience' he didn't mean a loser re-tread, and it was going to be another insightful, fresh look at refining the process instead of blowing it up and turning us into shit.

I liked that Shanahan was very transparent with what happened.

Dubas tried to play the victim in the media to garner sympathy using his family and then used the situation to get a better contract and more power from MLSE. and his plan ultimately failed.

Shanahan and MLSE clearly didn't like being jerked around and cut ties with him.

Basically the long and short of it.

The public appeal was not necessary. He could have asked for anything behind closed doors and no one would fault him. But he tried to engineer some public panic that he might step away. I wouldn’t appreciate that from a player let alone the public face of the team as GM.

timeline
1. they had a deal in place effectively
2. dubas says he wants to do a presser..shanny advises against it.
3. dubas says a bunch of stuff to the media that he didnt tell shanny
4. dubas demands more money on the pretense of "family"

ye, this aint on shanny

very unprofessional by dubas.

He blindsided them. If the family angle had been real he could have ironed everything out in private, lined it all up. Mended the home front and come out strong and united. He negotiated in public, performing in public and it blew up.

Imo they opened this up to happen by trying to sort out an extension essentially here at the last minute.

They expected Dubas to play ball and it seemingly backfired since he probably (for better or worse) had a chip on his shoulder about a few issues

Dubas probably has an offer from somewhere else. He wanted to see what the Leafs threshold was and asked for enormous amount in both power and money

But this felt like ex wife who wanted to come out as a victim and wanted out so you call out the relationship. Not other way around

I like Dubas but just as some players receive bad advice, he probably received some from his agent.

Just because Willy or Marners agent tried to force you over a barrel doesn't mean you do it to your bosses too. These are the types of tactics that can keep you out of the game for a long time. You always play your cards right, but your word must be your bond.

If what Shanahan said is true. Dubas's lack of professionalism at the end will sewer him in his future endeavors.

In what regard? Sending an email instead of a phone call? Marginal. Asking for more money due to work life balance? Completely mundane. Being ambiguous about his contractual status in the press? Ryan O'Reilly just did that. It's a sports team. The contracts are public record. It's a conspicuous thing to be questioned about.

Shanny saw what was going on. Both Kyle and his agent tried to put the wool over his eyes.

* When watching Kyle's press, there was a dramatic shift in thinking - as Kyle expressed, he might not want to be the team's GM anymore. Came to the realization that he needed to potentially start looking at new GM.

* Over next few weeks after Monday's locker clear out, gained no clarity on Kyle's situation. Did not receive clarity, which suggested to him that Kyle didn't want to be GM.

* On Thursday, Kyle informed Shanahan that his agent would reach out - agent presented a new financial package to the team, and before dinner, got an email from Kyle saying he wanted to continue being GM of the Maple Leafs. Admits though, that by then, he had already been thinking about the future of the Maple Leafs with a different GM.

Board should have stepped in on Monday and fired both.

Imo should have made a decision about the future of the team last summer..either double down on the Dubas' vision, and give him what he wanted or completely moved on to someone else.

Leaving all of this to literally the last minute is a titanic level disaster for the team. Makes everyone look awful

So, "not sure I want to keep doing this" two days later turned into "yeah, I really want to be here ... as long as it's at 5 years/$7M and full autonomy."

No wonder Shanahan changed his mind about wanting Kyle back! So good for Brendan to decide to move on from Dubas. I would've preferred he not even offered an extension in the first place but at least it's over now.
