imagine marner being an impact player in the playoffs...

that'll be the day
I think he will but probably not with the Leafs, unless he starts following Andrew Tate on how to become a Man. Bc MM got a very weak mentality not saying he is weak but he just put too much pressure on himself.

It'll be interesting if they handle this via internal promotion - ie say Pridham to GM, Spezza shifts from advisor to AGM or something that involves an external search.

If they look outside the current front office, the candidate would likely have to feel comfortable jumping into an org that has built up different departments like the medical science group and analytics department. MLSE didn't spend money on that for it to go to waste.

If that ends up being the case, Tampas, Seattle's or Avs AGMs may prove intriguing since their front offices have similar setups. I'd add the Canes in too, but they aren't likely giving up anyone until the playoffs are over.
There is a difference between not coming back and not coming back as the GM. I would really hope that he comes back to manage the structure and does not have to worry about day to day operations. Admin vs management.

He will come back a better GM at another time, as he learned a valuable lesson: never give your subordinates more power than you. He was loyal to a fault, and he paid the price.

A sarcastic slow clap goes out to the core 4...you guys (well, most of you, anyway) broke Kyle, the guy that went to bat for you constantly.

I'll never figure out why they hired Dubas with so little experience anyways. Yeah there are some connections but that's no good enough. Big part of this job is networking and someone at that age just wouldn't have enough in that area.

My hindsight is that Lou's biggest error was not going harder at the trade deadline in those first two playoff years. Those teams were stacked with the youth plus the remnants of good vets like Bozak, JVR, Komarov, Polak. A rental of an elite player or two for those teams might have given this new era some early taste of success with the young stars taking less prominent roles.
I can see that but mostly in Lou’s final year bc his first year was the Tank year and his 2nd was the surprise year.
Not sure who was available during Lou final year. But do remembered that he was all in or else he would not sign Marleau and held on to Bozak, Leo and JVR.

I love this team. Been following them for 30+ years.

But there is a small (medium?) size part of me that hopes we get someone like Dave Nonis in at GM, and that person loads up on big lugs like we did in the mid 2000s - I'm talking Jeff Finger, Mike Komisarek, type guys - so that posters like the person above can truly be reminded about what having bad management means.
attaboy, cut your nose off to spite your face...............

This worries me because I really want to retain Pridham for his Cap Wizardry. Before him I believe Kelly Mcrimmon was the target under Liewicke and you can see why with the Golden Knights.

Let's not get carried away. Pridham role is valuable but he's not the only guy who can do this job.

There are plenty of captalosit who's good at this. I say find the guy from Tampa. He knows what he's doing

Dude I’m agreeing with you.

Rielly-Hainsey
Gardiner-Zaitsev

Is an ELITE top 4, it’s amazing that we were able to keep them together even for a short while. I can’t see how anyone else would be able to put that defense together in just 3 short years even if you inherit Rielly and Gardiner.
Lou vs Dubas in Toronto isn't an apples-to-apples comp

Lou had 1 contention year in 2018 vs Dubas who had 5, so naturally Dubas would pay more to get better results from the defense.

Lou did his job in breaking down the team and culture from the Kessel era.

Lou has a shelve life of 3-4 years he did his job in his 3 years but it was time to move on

The critical time was when the RFA’ needed contracts and he went out and got Tavares then proceeded to invest 50% of the cap on 4 forwards.
The bottom line is none of us know if this is a good move or not but the players he invested so much faith in we’re not getting it done. His deal for Murray left us with an AHL backup and when our number one went down he became our number one. Tons of hockey fans and experts question and predicted that result.
somin effect Dubas wasn’t getting it done and running it back for the 8th year was not acceptable
Dubas was not GM for 8 years. Dubas became GM at a critical time, and did a really good job navigating both it and the abnormal league environment that followed. It was important to have him here for this next critical moment, and it's probably the worst possible time to go on a GM search. This is a potentially catastrophic loss for the organization, and how it all played out doesn't inspire confidence that MLSE knows what they're doing enough to prevent it from being one.

McDonagh was the obvious one, he wasn’t a rental either.
