Every GM has a shelf life. His biggest flaw always been Keefe

Wish him all the best. But he was part of a management that wasted best years of this core

Not sure why ppl are crying. He didn't exactly take this core to the next level. At the end of the day, this is a performance focused industry. He's not exactly connor mcdavid of GM

Two years too late in my opinion. The entire management needed to go after Montreal fiasco

Nah his biggest flaw was believing in the core 4… Keefe was becoming a closer 2nd though.

Kind of indifferent .. he had some good with the bad. My guess is he’ll at some point go on and have success elsewhere

This is my favourite hypothetical.

Ok so Nylander sits all year and doesn’t have a contract next offseason, neither do Matthews and Marner. You think Michael Nylander, Paul, Ferris, and Matthews’ people don’t get together and say “your team has 0 offense without us, and you can’t spend our money on anyone in UFA until you either sign or trade us at a discount, also we’re all actively looking at offer sheets so clocks ticking”.

It would legitimately be the least amount of leverage any GM has ever had and would set us back to square one of the rebuild during a string of underwhelming top picks if he doesn’t cave to their new demands. We’re probably running a Lafreniere-Kadri-Kakko top line right now in that universe.
We would've been better off having him sit the way he played when he came back. LOL

I also agree this was the TSN turning point for Dubas's demise. He looked weak coming out the gates and got steamrolled every contract after.

We lost Kadri because of Kadri. You are right about Hyman, though.
Also for cap reasons, Dubas was after Brodie for a couple of years. They had the trade in place but Kadri vetoed a trade to Calgary, Leafs ultimately signed Brodie the following year. If there was no Tavares, Kadri is the 2C. If he's the 2C, he's not expendable.

I'm trying to look at things objectively as possible, the downfall of this team to me ultimately came down to the Tavares signing.

Hmm why didn’t they mention Keefe wasn’t coming back? Seems strange.
Because he is, despite the fact he should have walked the plank 5 days ago and Shanny should have been included in today's activities too.

Unbelievable that the least deserving guy is gone and the other two stooges are still around. All three should have been canned Monday night.

I don't like everything he's done, but I can't remember a Leafs GM who won as many trades and drafted as well as Dubas.

I guess it depends on who they bring in as his replacement. Could be another Nonis/Burke-esque GM lol.

Hope Keefe is gone too.

Did he really draft that well? We had one dubas pick on the playoff roster and only two played a meaningful amount of mins this year. That's after 4 years of drafts...

Keefe is a worse coach than the core 4 are hockey players, but it's the same general issue of not being able to make the tough decisions

That’s the thing. The boys actually showed up and had a pack mentality against TB but didn’t against Panthers. Really strange
Tampa was way meaner and intimidated them………or they felt like they had accomplished enough by winning 1 round to take the heat off and just coasted to the off season.
I know what my eyes tell me, what do your tell you

Meh

He was actually pretty solid the last two years. He never filled the top 6 LW role, but got us everything we needed apart from that. It’s just a shame his first few years were where he caused the most damage to this team. Last two runs were on the core, not him imo

Him sticking with keefe also a red flag. That plug should’ve been gone last year, maybe after Montreal. Should have stayed an interim in 19-20

I don’t mind the change, but we got to be real careful who we bring in to retool/rebuild the core. We want to be competitive

In my opinion, Matthews was not going to sign for less than a $10M AAV after Eichel had gotten that. However, they might have gotten a year or two longer at, say, $10.5M or so with Marner coming in at $10M.

Do people really think that if Matthews or Marner had put themselves out there as willing to sign offer sheets, they wouldn’t have gotten offers n the range they signed for and that the Leafs wouldn’t have matched?
I agree. It's not the money though, it's the term. I said it at the time, and I stick to it to this day -- Matthews got the right money at the wrong term.

I think he nailed the Nylander contract.

40 goals, and 86th. highest cap hit.

And the young man just loves playing hockey.

Hard to see negatives in that one.
He got paid more than Pasta...sat out and when he returned was completely out of shape.

WIlly is a mercenary like his Dad. He's fair value. But he's gonna ask for stupidity on his next contract.

Thought it was 500k too rich at the time. It worked out the other way around. I don't think anyone holds the Nylander contract against him.

In total hindsight, would a forward core of the following bring us past the 2nd round?

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Knies-Kadri-Marner
Bunting-ROR-Acciari

Definitely felt like it was heading in this direction with his comments last week.

I was not the biggest fan of Dubas' work the past couple years (the Foligno trade, Murray trade, even our deadline this year) but his drafting has been strong and the one thing that I always tried to keep in mind was, whatever his flaws, the grass was decidedly not greener.

There are a lot of really dumb General Managers in this league and depending on who ends up in charge, this could end really badly for this franchise. The timing also couldn't be worse with now potentially an interim GM having to make massive decisions on the future of the Big 4 in Toronto.

Its a power move to force his way into the GM position. End of story.

Okay and what? Good for him, for people that continuously complain about Dubas being a soft bitch and making the organization soft, you’re complaining when he made a boss move. Make up your mind.

In this business you need to make shit happen for yourself and he did just that.

See my original post.

I am leaving.

Off to cheer for whatever team he is now the GM of, like many of you predicted, nice knowing you all.

This is sarcasm

Honestly, it sucks.

I am really hoping we don't go too far the other way and bring in someone who is past their prime (Lou/Holland type) who butchers this team, and I am praying we don't bring in Treliving to trade one of the core players.

I think Dubas is a great GM and it sucks he is leaving, I trusted him to trade one of the core pieces, and can't think of too many GMs I trust that are available.

I am a Leaf fan and will be cheering for them next year

Also set the stage for the other two. That contract, the way he handled it, it was sharks circling the water after.
