Okay so when you said "everyone prefers that" you clearly don't include yourself in that group. As you are perfectly fine with apparent conflicts of interest. Also, its' been reported pretty much everywhere that Armstrong was a new agent for Dubas in this latest negotiation with the Leafs. Where did you read he's been with Armstrong since pre-2010? The point is we don't know whether or not its been a issue. People can speculate how fair that matthews contract was now or how fair the upcoming one would have been if Dubas had stuck around. Any respectable GM in the league shouldn't put themselves in a position where that kind of speculation has fertile ground.
No, I would prefer there not to be any conflict of interest. Here there might be. It has nothing to do with the Matthews contract- that is not even an issue. He went to school at Brock with Armstrong and then he became his agent. At the moment Dubas is not a GM though he is in the running for the opening in Pittsburgh.

I've only seen Steve Simmons say they wanted that and I thought anyone with a brain didn't take his opinions or articles seriously at all.

That's impressive at how fast they finished their investigation. Can't wait to read the findings when put online. Give me a link when it does.
just head over to the Who should be next coach thread. Only took 7 post for his name to pop up and got a few like.
Didn't look for any more suggesting him after that

Are you guys aware of GrammaDubie and posting and retweeting in defense of her grandson Kyle,.

Gramma Dubie Stands By Grandson With Supportive Tweets Following Kyle Dubas' Exit as Maple Leafs GM

As the fallout continues following Kyle Dubas’ stunning exit from the Maple Leafs GM post, his grandmother, Marietta, and her popular Twitter account wasted no time in weighing in.

If you are a fan of Kyle Dubas’ work, then there is no doubt you are familiar with the former Toronto Maple Leafs GM's grandmother Marietta and her Twitter account.

Rarely a day went by when @GrammaDubie didn't weigh in on the team's performance. On Friday, the Maple Leafs dismissed Kyle from his post as general manager of the club and Gramma Dubie wasted no time in retweeting tweets in support of her grandson.

One user, replying to the Leafs' press release of GM's parting of ways asked if they could keep Gramma Dubie to which she replied "No Way!!!"

Confusion and hurt ripples through Maple Leafs in wake of Kyle Dubas’ dismissal

Anger. Confusion. Shock. Disappointment.

Those are some of the feelings reverberating around the Maple Leafs right now in the aftermath of Kyle Dubas’ firing as general manager last week.

The Athletic reached out to several people who work for the Leafs this week. Anonymity was granted to them as they were not permitted by the team to speak to the media.

This story reflects their feelings at the moment and speaks to a level of disillusionment that team president Brendan Shanahan and the next GM of the Leafs will have to work to unwind.

“I’m in mourning right now,” one person who worked in the front office with Dubas during his time with the Leafs said.

There’s a real sense of loss for staff members. Dubas was their leader and the one who hired many of them. Suddenly, he was gone a week after the season came to an end – and without, in their minds, a satisfactory explanation as to why.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” a Leafs front office member said of the way Dubas was let go. “That’s why it’s disappointing.”

Shanahan went from wanting to bring Dubas back to firing him in a matter of days. And then offered his version of events in a press conference that left people inside the organization confused and upset.

but but but i thought it was Toronto or a year off, right Kyle?!!?!?!?!?!?

he's a con-man, cult leader AND a fraud that will use his family as negotiation pawns? shanahan sucks horribly and should also be gone, but...have fun, Penguins!

also: holy shit is the white-knighting the media is doing for him annoying as hell too. god almighty, it's like he's their son or something.

First off, Shanahan is the President of the Toronto Maple Leafs and is ultimately responsible for all major decisions that impact the club. Every GM in every sport has a President or an Owner that they need to run certain things by. It's not only corporate governance, it's just smart management.

Secondly, remember these reporters are in the business of getting readership and creating controversy is tried and true method of achieving that objective.

There is a time and place for micromanagement. If you don’t trust a GM to do their job, replace them, or be the President/GM. I do agree that certain things, like large contracts should be reviewed. But trades, draft picks… general management of a team, should be run by the general manager.

Yes, media can create controversy. But in this case, the signs of issues were visibly there. This was even predictable and discussed here.

What were these signs though? I'm actually very curious because it seems like Dubas got everything he wanted. His entire staff from the Soo hired, many players from the Soo signed to either the Marlies or Growlers and even some for the Leafs. Made many trades and made a lot this year alone at the deadline to completely change the bottom 6. Read 1 thing about a Knies trade being blocked but then it came out that Dubas and Shanahan didn't want to do that trade and don't know how that report got out. Idk what else a President could do to prove that a GM has all the power to be a GM if he let all of this happen.

It has been posted before. In this thread I think.

Call me old fashioned but I prefer there to not even be a mole hill, let alone a mountain, when it comes to the GM having apparent conflicts of interest. There should never even be a speck of possibility that is possible and for Dubas to put himself in a position where it's so much of a possibility that agents across the league and the NHLPA are looking into it is frankly a disserve to the Leafs organization.

But like I said I'm old fashioned. Some people around here seem to be okay with anything.
Im only 40 and i think this way

An important part of a job in power is to avoid situations that can even be perceived in a negative light - i mean few can see politics.. but

Maybe we are old fashioned

The Toronto or bust comments remind me a lot of Sundin's situation.
Doesn’t it? We have lived this before, except those guys were a lot older, and by that time less successful. That tank job took like 7 years. We’re not there right now.

I have one highlight to share.. there was this one game, we’re all in the gdt, and flipping the team is at the point where Dominic Moore is taking a ceremonial faceoff at home in the ACC. Moore. God bless him, hard worker, good face off guy, but the reaction is naturally, “Why in the hell is Moore taking a ceremonial draw”

Me: “Afraid anyone else would lose the draw?”

———

Man we aren’t in that place. Team is good, let’s go next GM, next coach, figure this out, we’re close.

Turns out the only thing worse than the stress of the GM job for the Dubas family was the stress of seeing Dubas all the time

Do you have evidence of this "micromangement" besides rumors and innuendo?

People can make excuses for Dubas, but he clearly stated that it would be Toronto or taking a year off. His exact words were “you won’t see me popping up somewhere else next week”. Now, quite literally a week later, it seems to be a foregone conclusion that he’s taking the same job for a different org. in a different country. How’s that for the family?

He’ll frame it at the presser about how he discussed things with his family and determined that they’d be hunky dory about him continuing on in this role. But we all know it was a bullshit negotiation ploy the entire time. As if he didn’t have access to his family for months since he was offered an extension.
