Kyle Dubas quotes:

“It’s Toronto or nowhere.”
“I couldn’t put my family through that.”
“You won’t see me popping up anywhere else.”

One week later:

it takes a special kind of scumbag to use his family way he did, shed some crocodile tears, try to knife his boss in the back AND ask for millions more in a last minute power play. A special type of scumbag indeed...........

That's why Dubas says his demand of autonomy of decision appears to be "reasonable" to himself (per his public statement yesterday). If you don't give your job to me I can get it somewhere else.

He probably had his eyes on the pens' job all along (given his personal relationship with those in the organization, as many have mentioned). The last minute contractual demand is his way of quitting on Toronto, rather than a naive and idiotic negotiating move.

Perhaps even the family narrative is just to justify his decision to leave the "highly pressured" Toronto market place.

Sure smells that way. He wouldn't be talking to Crosby otherwise. His sob story looks like pure BS from here.

Pittsburgh can have him.

Dubas had pittsburgh all along

he's going to take the job

He knew this well in advance of getting the boot in TO IMO

Walks like a duck, talks like a duck then it probably is a duck. :)

As long as he stays away from the Sens. I'm worried Pitts will tell him no thanks and the media will act like he said no because he wants the Sens.
I just don't see the great job he did, he was average at best but the media is acting like he invented advanced stats and has somehow leveraged them to do great things.

Dubas quickly getting another GM gig is the best timeline IMO. Worshipers can go follow him at his new location. The family flip flop exposes himself as a disingenuous disloyal character although I doubt cognitive dissonance will allow the cultists to admit it at this time (it will dawn on them later). His ego will not allow him to resist attempting to "own" the next Leafs' GM in transactions. He's at his worst when his personal pride is his motivation. And the closet Dubas loyalists at MLSE will jump ship as soon as they can.

Bingo.
This was in the works for a while.

it does make one feel sorry for the posters over on the Pen's board, they don't deserve the Dubas disciples nor their threat clogging drivel about by wonder..........

I really think if Dubas goes to Pittsburgh he'll do exactly what was just done in Chicago: sell off everyone to fully tank the team. Pittsburgh is a market that can't afford long stretches of bottom feeding. They stop selling tickets when the team stinks. Unlike other times the Penguins faced a downturn, the current ownership is financially stable and presumably not operating off loans.

Mirtle and Chris Johnston are both pro Dubas and now their meal ticket has dried up so now their posting and claiming all inside knowledge of Shanny blocked trades and Shanny promises to players and when pressed for more details they have none etc.

Sounds like they need to drive traffic to their pod and sites as reporters, and tossing some monkey wrenches to create more chaos for Leafs post Dubas. :wg:
Mirtle has always been critical of Dubas's decisions on his podcast lol

On the plus side, maybe he can reunite with Matt Murray in Ottawa (or Pittsburgh).

It's quite possible he did and then Shanahan said he wouldn't budge on the contract. Dubas could have walked away but then media and fans would blame him for the "mess" left behind.

I think there is a lot here that we don't know about. Did Shanahan even truly want Dubas back?

Why offer 5 years and then not sit down to hammer out a deal if both sides truly wanted to be together for 5 years?

It doesn't add up.
It's possible that Dubas' ask was so far out of left field that the immediate response was,

".........wow. the complete lack of self awareness with this guy."

Meaning it was so bad that it wasn't worth negotiating.

Couple of points for discussion, while we all reserve judgement. :)

Chris Johnston is very pro Dubas based on his reporting, but how would Johnston get inside info of private conversations between Shanny and the core 4?

Does CJ have these players on speed dial to contact them 24/7, so then after hearing Shanny was making calls, decided I'd better call up Auston, Mitch, WIlly and Johnny and ask them personally to tell him what Leafs President told them in private behind Leafs closed doors. So then are we to believe all 4 core Leafs players leaked that info to CJ so he could go public with his insider info? If that remote fact was even plausible would Shanny have a bigger problem because of trust and confidence issues of his core players going outside the team to relay information to the media?

How else would Chris Johnston get this exclusive scoop no one else did, and be able to make his claim of knowing what Shanahan said directly to them without asking them?

What experienced and reputable GM would take on a new job and have 1/2 the teams salary cap tied to 4 players that he is told is outside of his control and untouchable?

Second, Leafs don't even have a coach yet in place, so would it be wise prior to getting and having input Shanny has already tied the new GMs hands so anyone taking the job would be informed by Shanny these 4 players are untouchable because (reporter Chris Johnston) claims I made them a promise they would not be traded so as GM you work on the bottom end of the roster only?

Shanny would essentially be looking for his new puppet to put in the GM chair when he himself is really the acting GM making the important decisions.

What has Shanny done or said that makes you think he has any intention of trading the core four?

I get that the CJ report may be unwanted news. But there's nothing so far than tangibly disproves it.

How do we know Shanny himself didn't directly leak it to CJ for that matter?

This is the exact opposite of what CJ said . I trust CJ over Frank Seravalli.
That's the trick with fortunetellers, seers, predictors, and the like - thrown out enough vague guesses, and have different people make different predictions, and in most cases people will remember what came true (which guesses were close enought to be called 'right'), and forget about the others.

And with only the people who were 'right' reminding you of their genius (and neglecting to mention all the times they weren't), they come off looking like they actually knew something.

And then sign AM 34 as a UFA. Pens may be signing Dubas to get the bigger prize in 12 months... or sooner could also be traded there. He gets past July 1st he can say not signing guys but will accept a trade to Pens and no one else.... What do you do then?

The Pens don't have enough cap space for Matthews. Non-issue. And Matthews isn't nearly in love with Dubas to move to Pittsburgh of all places lol.

IF the go the hawks route and trade off assets they can have plenty of space. As it is they will have 37M+ of space on July 1 2024. If Dubas ends up in Pittsburgh I would not be shocked to see Nylander or Matthews follow come July 1 2024

Going to be awkward when Nick Cousins shows up at the next Soo Alumni event with Dubas and Keefe there. :wg:

Would have been even more Soo related 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon separation, if former Soo goalie and Nick Cousins teammate Matt Murray was in net.

Honestly thanks to this thread and the post about Nick Cousins, my Timmy's picks tonight are Tkachuk, Staal (cuz I hate him), Cousins.

I'm not a betting man so the Timmy's thing is fun enough for me.

I think if Dubas is smart, he's already been talking to Peter Horachek about a comeback to NHL coaching.
