I get the sense that shanahan is tywin lannister, (protecting his power), and that dubas is littlefinger (tried positioning his way to the top to eventually replace shanahan and got caught)

I’m thinking Dubas is Renley and Shanny is Stannis, trying to get the throne over the rightful heir. The ghost of Stannis that kills Renley is the analytics he tried to use to negotiate his contract extension with Shanny. Babcock is Davos.

Burke was Robert Baratheon. Nonis is Ned Stark. Lou is Tywin. Fletcher is Maester Pycelle. Marner is Joffrey. Ballard is the Mad King.

It seems as though former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas hired and acquired a lot of previous Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds players and other staff for the Leafs and Marlies during his tenure.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Kyle Dubas Ongoing Connections to the Greyhounds

by Michael Alexander

Toronto Maple Leafs and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds

Dubas was born and raised in the Soo, and his and his families connections to the Soo Greyhounds run deep. His father interned with the team and his grandfather coached the team from 1960 to 1967. As for Kyle himself, he spent his youth in various roles with the team culminating as the team’s general manager from 2011 to 2014.

In one of the first moves made by Dubas as G.M. of the Marlies was hiring Sheldon Keefe to head coach the affiliate as former Head Coach of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds from 2012 to 2015.

In 2019 as G.M. of the Leafs, Dubas promoted Keefe to coach the big club.

Beyond major titles, there’s a list of other Leafs and Marlies staff who have also plied their trade in the Soo:

• Chris Roque – Amateur Scout (Leafs)

• Victor Carneiro – Amateur Scout (Leafs)

• Richard Rotenberg – Director of High Performance (Leafs)

• Wes Clark – Assistant Director of Player Personnel (Leafs)

• A.J. MacLean – Assistant Coach (Marlies)

• Coach Jon Elkin - Goaltending (Marlies)

In Kyle’s first draft as G.M. of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2018, Rasmus Sandin (#29) was Dubas’ first pick. Four slots later, Mac Hollowell was selected.

Since then, no Soo Greyhound has been drafted by Dubas, but that hasn’t stopped him from loading up on Soo Greyhounds alumni through other means. In his first major trade with the Leafs in 2019, Dubas picked up Jake Muzzin.

Then in 2020, he grabbed Jack Campbell.

For the 2020-21 season, Wayne Simmonds and Joe Thornton both came aboard.

So, when Dubas made his first splash of the 2021 off-season, it should be no surprise that he scored Jared McCann. (info from Capfriendly.com)

Other Soo Greyhounds Alumni Playing in the NHL

It’s hard to imagine Dubas ever deviating, so here is a list of Soo Greyhounds alumni playing in the NHL that could be in the Leafs fixture sometime in the near future:

• Matt Murray (Senators)

• Tony DeAngelo (Rangers)

• Nick Cousins (Predators)

• Jeff Carter (Penguins)

• Darnell Nurse (Oilers)

• Conor Timmins (Avalanche)

• Robin Lehner (Golden Knights)

• Colin Miller (Sabres)

• Barrett Hayton (Coyotes)

• Nick Ritchie (Bruins)

• Michael Bunting (Coyotes)

If the Leafs are going to wheel and deal with any of these teams, you can be sure Dubas is going to consider picking up one of his own.
Jesus Christ, this is just.... Too much. This is
far beyond coincidence and even far beyond a preference.

But he is so young, surely he is not attached to his past like the old guard?

This guy showed his cards and they were duds, he's crapped out and if he lands another job maybe he'll do better, but he did not handle his exit very well. The guy is paid millions of dollars per year he has to be more professional than what he's shown.

I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole if I was another team.

Dude was given a chance that few get and on his way out shit on the folks that gave him that chance.

Dubas releases statement following Maple Leafs departure

Disregarding the general crap he had to say at the beginning, the end is interesting.

I'm expecting at least an attempt to take some of the staff/players with him. Make me GM in Pittsburgh and I'll bring in Matthews? PIT would get AM for cap only. AM would get his 15. Kyle Gming again. Pit with star in their prime.

"To the players, coaches and staff at the facility each day, past and present, thank you for your passion and commitment at every step of the journey together," he said. "It was a tremendous pleasure to work alongside you each day. We will roll from here."

Dubas cried crocodile tears in his press conference. I love the leafs. If I’m not GM of the leafs I won’t be a GM in the league next year.

One week later- dubas meets with penguins for GM job.

The guy has no credibility and no hockey sense how to build a team.

I can see him now giving Crosby Malkin and letang 8 year 96 million dollar contracts each with nmc.

He can and he will

The Penguins soght him out. They were close to hiring someone when Dubas potentially became available
They asked and were granted permission to speak to him. Did he agree to the interview? He didn't cry in the press conference. By Wednesday, he had discussed things with his family and decided to stay as a GM . Then he got word that the team was not going to renew the contract. With unemployment looming, he may have changed his mind. Shanny changed his mind about offering the contract.

A good reason why people probably shouldn't work themselves up into a tizzy until more information comes out.

This places the desire for more "autonomy" into a whole other light. Wasn't about getting to do whatever he wanted - rather didn't want to rely on Shanny as the only pathway to addressing the ownership board. One can still argue he didn't need it, but it also comes across as a much more reasonable request....

If the Leafs are going to wheel and deal with any of these teams, you can be sure Dubas is going to consider picking up one of his own.

The flip side of surrounding oneself with an unproportionately large number of former associates is to build up one's power in an empire.

The current "narrative" has given me the feeling that, rather than a family man, Dubas may be one of those who has a persistent lust for more power.

This goes back to when he forced Shanahan's hand to get the GM job before he was ready, not willing to wait longer and learn more from a hall-of-fame GM (and he was taken to school by Nylander's agent). He just wasn't satisfied with the wait and wanted the power sooner.

What he wanted from Shanahan last week was simply a repeat of what he did to Lou, forcing the hand to get his way to accumulate more autonomy (i.e. power) in decision-making.

This is how someone much younger than their peers could climb the ladder faster than others. For anyone who have worked in a big corporation, it is almost never about how "smart" someone is, but how "smart" someone looks to others along with how aggressive someone is, and the aggression includes the schemes to make redundant your superior.

Hence the talk about other teams wanting him as president. I never thought that it is remotely possible for someone this young to be a president, esp one with repeated playoffs failure. Remember, he took over a team that already has regular season success. So essentially he didn't do much whereas the media talk of him as highly-sought after smart executive as if he has just won the stanley cup.

How close is Kyle Dubas to becoming the Penguins' general manager?
How about close enough to have met with the resident franchise icon?A source with knowledge of the situation told DK Pittsburgh Sports that Dubas, an apparent finalist for the GM vacancy, was at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex for a session that extended late into Tuesday night. Sidney Crosby also was there and was believed to be among those who met with Dubas. Members of the Penguins' public relations staff also were on hand.

Even as a "Dubas supporter", I have to say this is not a good look for him. Clearly does seem like a power play that failed. Time to close the book on the Dubas era. Anxious to see who comes on board next, and getting on with the changes the team needs to make to secure the future.

You know the funny part of the so called " Tkachuk fiasco" is that the majority of the Leafs fan base thought it was the Florida Panthers that got scalped, and took a huge hit and going to fall down and out of competitiveness.

"Matthew Tkachuk was traded to the Florida Panthers on Friday night, with Huberdeau part of the haul going to the Calgary Flames for the power forward. Florida also sent defenseman MacKenzie Weegar, prospect Cole Schwindt and a lottery-protected first-round selection in the 2025 NHL draft.

View attachment 711939

Huberdeau was the Panthers all-time leading scorer coming off a season where he finished 30 goals and 115 points 2nd only to McDavid. MacKenzie Weegar was a top 4 Dman with 44 points ranked only behind Aaron Ekblad on the defense chart and included 1st round a lottery protected top 10 pick and a prospect( former 3rd rounder) .

What would be Leafs equivalent if they attempted to acquire Tkachuk ? Mitch Marner + TJ Brodie + 1st round pick + 3rd round B level prospect.

That is essentially what Brad Treliving got for Tkachuk and under the premise that he wanted out, wasn't going re-sign in Calgary and Florida among the few teams he would go to.

Its now in hindsight that everyone is on the Tkachuk side and thinks Calgary got taken based on the results. But that is revisionist history today based on opinions at time of trade,
This is very true actually, most people were lauding this trade at the time. It’s funny how people think we don’t have memories. I still don’t want him though.

What happened to Zeke?

He's been the most vocal Leafs fan on this site the last 20 years and wasn't around at all this past season.

Hopefully everything is alright.

My biggest gripe about this whole debacle is that it has kept the playoff posters bogging down this forum for weeks after the season. Usually I'd be able to come back by now and just lurk what the regulars are arguing about.

Certainly in a much, much worse position than a week ago when he was our GM. What can I say that hasn't been said? A short sighted emotional move with no backup plan in a timeframe where we need all hands on deck. Can't wait to hire a boomer GM who is going to sign Gudbranson type contracts again or David Clarksons out there in the name of toughness.

Can't wait to watch the org lose the core for nothing and then sit there in a Sundin situation times 1000 worse while we have no first the follow year after Matthews walks. Let's see what short sighted move the boomer GM makes to desperately remain a playoff team that handcuffs us back into being a bubble team on the outside looking in for years until Shanny is fired.

Then we wait to see if MLSE ever approves another rebuild considering it took decades to do it once already.

I thought you gave up your leafs fandom when Dubas got let go?
