They should have decent idea of what 34 and 88 want for their next deals. If they don't, what was the former GM doing since the TDL ?
I don't think that the Nylander negotiation changes much. Matthews though? A guy that
A-has "blank cheque" leverage across the league
B- has shown a willingness to throw his weight around when he's not happy

Just reportedly went from happy to unhappy about the management and potential future of the team. Why would he commit to spending 8 years under another Babcock, or with a team that's blown up into mediocrity?

Those words came right out of Shanahan's mouth in his press conference. He wanted Dubas back as GM up until Dubas gave his conference.

So you are assuming that Shanahan was telling the whole story? I don't think he was, but that's just my speculation.

Really comes down to longevity. But 3 years is probably the odds on bet for most overall money if he's willing to risk. Basically you want to sign your last full value 8 year deal as late as someone will give it to you. More years at full pop.
Fair, but if that wrist doesn't come back to where it was, he's no longer close to being a $12M player.

IMO he'd be foolish to not sign a high AAV 8 years contract ASAP.

Debatable news on the Friday, celebratory news on the Mon/Tues. They wanted to mute the questions
That initial presser was at the beginning of the week though? I do agree about Friday news. FTR, I'd probably file that first presser under "Other". ;)

If they want to stay, I'd like to know why they would not be open to negotiating before July 1. Either way, I am exploring the market for a GM that will overpay.
well that would lead down the road of why i personally wouldn't want them back

my personal opinion - want to stay, negotiate / wanna be a dick don't until you have 'control'

I guess that depends on what you consider mid term.

I don't see him making more going 5 and 5 than he would going 8 and 3, but who knows where the cap may be by then

depends on the number for this contract and health - but yeah it could go the other way - higher number on an 8 yr now..

buh bye then...more interested in the crest than a single player who is paid more than fair and underperforms when it matters and who it seems (if the 15milly per is correct) may be more interested in fleecing the leafs than winning.

I was about to say bring back Dubas lol
I dont want this but if it did happen it would be hillarious

Not CEOs, but Bell & Rogers have executives on the MLSE board, and are contractually obligated to agree on any major decisions. Who really knows if that affected Dubas, but it's definitely a weird ownership dynamic.

Posts specifically intended to drive traffic to their sites? Holy crap, Mess, you should try that!

The MLSE Board linked is above. The Board include the CEO of Bell and Rogers and CFO. Lots of heavy hitters in there.

These big guys would be very difficult to deal with. I could imagine Shanahan making sure they are apprised of what is happening on a regular basis.

If there is pressure of oversight it would come from the Board down to Shanahan then down to Dubas.

The guy can't even gauge the talent differential between Holl, Kerfoot and McCann. Murray anyone? I would want my president to be the one that says not so fast to BS like that. Shanny didn't even do his job at that point but whatever.
And people are saying he was a great gm..
He just went with what he new best SSM connection Murray.
McCann was the one to keep

Then running the business you gotta make the line somewhere.. getting a deal done to try and win or holding negotiationd on your terms

I mean at the end of the day they are all getting money.. trade clauses bonuses blah blah.. for f*** sake they arent losing 30 million by negotiating now

If the best thing for the business is to trade one of them to wake up the other two then you do that

You can still trade them afterwards.. with some restrictions but you arent f***ed if you wait either
Matthews has a nmc that takes effect on july 1. You cant trade him then inly to where he wants to go and that diminishes the value.
Nylander has a 10 team clause in his after july 1
Which also diminishes the return

You ask them june 1 what do you want if they tell you a number you can live with you sign them. If they didn’t give you a number or say they wont negotiate you trade them asap and go from there

It would be stupid to lose them both for nothing or limited value

Right.. you cant if they say no but in the grandness of the situation.. and you are already going into the season without extensions it is likely they are at best 50 50 at wanting to come back.. so i dont see them denying a trade to a preferred destination

He will make more doing 2 mid term deals
Not if he gets hurt or his wrist keeps becoming an issue and or his production starts trending down.

Again, I am not suggesting KD was the only man for the job. I do thnk he was a good fit. But that's not to say there aren't other options that are suitable or even better.

My issue is we don't currently have a direction going into a massively busy offseason. We have 5 weeks before Marner and Matthews NMC kick in as well as 5 weeks before the draft + UFA. We have no one person clearly steering the ship at this moment. We have more questions then we have answers.

Hard to believe guys like Matthews and Nylander would be comfortable extending in Toronto for any period of time without even knowing anything about their future boss. Whoever that may be
May be overrating how much who the GM is matters to these guys. Most of the media I’ve watched ex players seem to scoff at the idea they ever cared who the GM was. Sounds like money and location were 1st through 5th as the reasons lol.
