Maybe, but a press conference late Friday of a long weekend also makes it seem like the Leafs were trying to limit the responses and keep their narritve as the clearest one.

Whether Shanny's story is the fulsome truth or not, it wouldn’t have made sense for Dubas to fire back. Best to keep it high level and move on.
It's always a bit clever for any organization to drop important news on the first day of a long weekend.

As the person who is remaining with the organization, Shanahan had to explain to the Leaf faithful why the GM wouldn't be sticking around. As for Dubas, it's better for him to move on from the Leafs if he eventually wishes to move on with another franchise.

Then running the business you gotta make the line somewhere.. getting a deal done to try and win or holding negotiationd on your terms

I mean at the end of the day they are all getting money.. trade clauses bonuses blah blah.. for f*** sake they arent losing 30 million by negotiating now

If the best thing for the business is to trade one of them to wake up the other two then you do that

You can still trade them afterwards.. with some restrictions but you arent f***ed if you wait either
or maybe having a gm who doesnt undermine his bosses...in public...in my experience that never ends well and it shouldnt.

Maybe im not understanding....you cant trade them if they dont want to after july 1 correct? So if you wait and go into the season without extentions to Matthews and Nylander you risk losing both for nothing. That isnt a gamble I personally would take.
Right.. you cant if they say no but in the grandness of the situation.. and you are already going into the season without extensions it is likely they are at best 50 50 at wanting to come back.. so i dont see them denying a trade to a preferred destination

That would be more logical than the 5 year, but I still maintain his biggest opportunity for maximum pay is to sign longer term now.
He will make more doing 2 mid term deals

For everyone panicking about time before july 1st.. what if:

Nylander and matthews are dead set against negotiating before july 1.. will not happen but they both want to stay and work a deal.. if you like the players.. you wait right?.. so maybe there isnt as much panic as some feel

Opens it up to work on a marner trade 🙋‍♂️

Lots of time
They should have decent idea of what 34 and 88 want for their next deals. If they don't, what was the former GM doing since the TDL ?

If they want to stay, I'd like to know why they would not be open to negotiating before July 1. Either way, I am exploring the market for a GM that will overpay.

Debatable news on the Friday, celebratory news on the Mon/Tues. They wanted to mute the questions

Shouting at fans, throwing water bottles, updating the resume, talking to his family and planning to back stab Shanny. Oh and let's not forget the celebration reaching his peak as Leafs GM, winning a round.

This take makes no sense because Dubas wasn't fired for this reason. He was fired because he tried to bypass Shanny and caused a power struggle. The org and Shanny wanted him back. They are happy with the culture and direction of the team.

This is about hiring a GM who will toe the line and do what Shanny and the board say
s not about blowing the team up.
IMO you've made some assumptions that may not be factual

I guess that depends on what you consider mid term.

I don't see him making more going 5 and 5 than he would going 8 and 3, but who knows where the cap may be by then

Mirtle on Leaf Lunch said Dubas was necessarily too excited about returning. So if that’s true, then Shanny sniffed him out and turfed him.

Imagine the damage Dubas takes if Matthews walks, or Marner or really any of the 3. Then imagine the damage he takes if he has to overpay. The guy was probably shitting bricks the past few nights after the loss. I think he legitimately felt that he had a winner or he would go much deeper.

Really comes down to longevity. But 3 years is probably the odds on bet for most overall money if he's willing to risk. Basically you want to sign your last full value 8 year deal as late as someone will give it to you. More years at full pop.

You think that is happening? The CEO and CFO of Bell and Rogers (2 of largest corporations in Canada) have nothing to do but to micromanage Dubas? Do you honestly believe that?
Not CEOs, but Bell & Rogers have executives on the MLSE board, and are contractually obligated to agree on any major decisions. Who really knows if that affected Dubas, but it's definitely a weird ownership dynamic.
Mirtle and Chris Johnston are both pro Dubas and now their meal ticket has dried up so now their posting and claiming all inside knowledge of Shanny blocked trades and Shanny promises to players and when pressed for more details they have none etc.

Sounds like they need to drive traffic to their pod and sites as reporters, and tossing some monkey wrenches to create more chaos for Leafs post Dubas. :wg:
Posts specifically intended to drive traffic to their sites? Holy crap, Mess, you should try that!

I heard he wants to hit free agency around 30-32, might actually be a 3-4 year contract so he can hit pay dirt again.

I’d rather sell him for a retool at 30 than pay someone to take him at 35 personally. If they insist on running it back we either win or tear it down in a 4-5 year term, paying 35 year old Matthews 13 mil doesn’t really fit with either option.
