I don’t understand why you wouldn’t negotiate that in private with Shanahan. Why Dubas didn’t sit down with him and talk about the things he didn’t like on the contract. Not say ok, go to a press conference, bring his family into it, ghost Shanny for a few days and then deliver a new contract offer?

Worth noting we only have Shanny's side of how things unfolded with regards to that stuff.

Seems like there was probably a fair amount of behind the scenes stuff that hasn't come to light yet.

Sounds like someone really in the loop. :wg:

Has 3807 followers and claims no responsibility for their tweets.

Can't find any reference on real Chris Johnston account mentioning it.

He's transcribing the latest Friedman podcast Mess, don't shoot the messenger beacuse you don't like the news ;)

Is it not the least bit suspicious that these behind-the-scenes stuff never came to light before? We never heard a whisper about it -- which the media is all over if it were -- yet now all of a sudden we're finding out Dubas was handcuffed in his job? I'm far too skeptical to be buying it.

Just another excuse in the massive pile of excuses surrounding this teams lack of success. Its fkn embarrassing. (kicks garbage can)

Amazing isn’t it, with all of the “media insiders” and not a single peep for half a decade about the poor little stick boy being vetoed.

Then within a week of being shitcanned, it’s suddenly an issue that’s all over the Toronto media.

Business is personal.

Never forget that.

Brendan Shanahan sure didn’t when outgoing general manager Kyle Dubas presented the Maple Leafs president with contract demands that might as well have been divorce papers.

The progressive front-office partnership that had restored the franchise to prominence had been torn asunder after fissures had begun to materialize throughout the season, relating to personnel issues.

In its wake, there is a clear sense of betrayal.

Dubas apparently believed he had leverage after he exhibited public angst over remaining in his role while invoking his family in a press conference his boss — Shanahan — suggested he not attend.

The GM — the former GM — apparently misread the room.

He lost his rabbi in the organization.

After four days of mixed or misinterpreted messages, Shanahan shut the door on the conversation and ended the relationship.

He has bosses, too, and those bosses had previously made the decision not to give Dubas a contract extension last summer.

Enough became enough.

And so the Maple Leafs are left scrambling and will hire a more conventional general manager unless Shanahan is willing to entrust whatever is left of his tenure at the top of an organization to an untested candidate who has the same priorities as Dubas.

He will hire a general manager who presumably will dismiss head coach Sheldon Keefe.

................

Dubas said last Monday that he would either return as Leafs GM or step away from the league for a time.

It is impossible to know whether that was a sincere and heartfelt expression of emotion or simply the opening lines of a script.

That’s probably too harsh.

Still, representation of family concerns morphed quickly into a reach for a higher payday.

Business was personal. Isn’t it always?

Rasmus Sandin still under contract for 1.4 million next year. I wonder if he will go ppg next season? I’ll miss Dubas though, he is a generational GM that achieved so much here during his tenure.
How could you not have great regular seasons with Matthew's Marner Nylander and JT. No other rookie GM had such a great start.
He hired a rookie coach that let those players run the bench.
Keefe had a no accountable coaching these players except Nylander.
When Keefe got upset at the beginning of the yr the apologized you knew he wasn't the right coach.
To me this is why the regular season was brought to the players stupid giveaways.

All of these 4 if traded will have a coach that will fix these issues in there game.

Can you imagine any of these player playing for TB Florida Vegus or Carolina coaches

I don't know if this can happen here .

Trading one of these players may wake the other 3 up.

If he turned on Shanny, as appears likely, he may never work again. Shanny gave him his start as a baby, no one else will trust him.
That's a pretty bad take lol.

He'll work when he wants to work. Maybe organizations won't want to give him 100% unchecked control, but that'll be more driven by the organization than distrust of dubas.

Pittsburgh asked and received permission to talk to him about their opening. While he hasn't gotten the job at this point, there is interest.

Kyle is going to be very lucky if he lands another gig. Very very lucky after that presser stunt and the way it's being framed as a power grab, ouch. Can you imagine the execs over in Pits contacting MLSE for a heads up to feel that out?

Not good.

The contacted MLSE for permission to talk with Dubas. They have had the chance to do just that. I have no idea if they took the opportunity to do that of course, but they could have. It is more of a mole hill than a mountain anyway.

Get a grip. He achieved zero.
I was being sarcastic. The Sandin trade just indicates that although Dubas might have learned to become an adequate GM he still was making risky and debatable moves right up to the end of his tenure. It’s reassuring to know that maybe he still kind of sucks as a GM and perhaps the team dodged a bullet by not extending him. Onward and upward!

I backed Dubas for quite a long time but.... I'm also finding it very convenient that the reporting hangs everything on Shanahan and MLSE ownership (who we never heard anything about aside from articles where other hockey execs talked about how jealous they were that Kyle got a blank cheque and hired 39353 assistants and 35938 directors of whatever).

Where is there an article with the jealous execs?

If the salary cap was $140 million, Toronto would have a $140 million payroll," one agent said. "They are the Yankees or the Dodgers of our league. [GM] Kyle [Dubas] seemingly gets a blank check from ownership." Toronto players sometimes joke that they could spend each day introducing themself to a different team staffer. Rival front office members joke that Dubas has more assistant general managers than they have ties; the Leafs technically have five AGMs, plus eight people in hockey ops with a director title.

"People will make fun of how much Toronto spends," one front office executive said. "But that's just because they're jealous. Too often in this league we cater to the lowest common denominator."

Just like my previous article about Kyle Dubas’ five best moves during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t write a follow-up article on his five worst moves during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

As I’ve said plenty of times, Kyle Dubas wasn’t a perfect general manager, nobody is, but he did a lot of good things for this team while he was here, and yes, he even did some questionable things for this team that has hurt them at times.

When I was writing my five best moves from Dubas, I felt like that list could look different for other people, but as I was writing this piece, I thought to myself that my list probably looks similar to a lot of others because of how big these moves were at the time.

1. Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Tyson Barrie, Alex Kerfoot and a 2020 3rd-round pick from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Nazem Kadri, Calle Rosen and a 2020 6th-round pick

2. Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Nick Foligno (CBJ) and Stefan Noesen (SJ) in a three-way trade in exchange for a 2021 1st-round pick, a 2021 4th-round pick and a 2022 4th-round pick

3. Toronto Maple Leafs protecting Justin Holl and Alex Kerfoot over Jared McCann in the 2021 Seattle Kraken expansion draft

4. Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Denis Malgin from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Mason Marchment

5. Toronto Maple Leafs sign free agent Petr Mrazek to a three-year, $11.4M contract ($3.8M AAV)

Honourable mention: Allowing Frederik Andersen to walk in free agency to sign a two-year, $9M contract ($4.5M AAV) with the Carolina Hurricanes

People who make fun of how much Toronto spends were labeled as jealous in the article. There is not one exec whom we know is jealous.
