IDK seems like a lot of unnecessary theatrics, especially in this market. Why bother? If anything, it is causing more unnecessary tension around the team and makes him look really incompetent as president... And he has certainly done enough of that in press conferences as it is. Would anyone really bat an eye if he just said "we decided to go in another direction"?

Sure, some may disagree with the decision, especially in regards to finding someone who will be as good/better than Dubas was, but he would be criticized if he extended Dubas too. If he had a good plan in place in terms of his replacement... I don't think anyone would really complain. Of course, the replacement will be compared to Dubas, as Dubas was to Lou, and there is uncertainty, but this is why Shanny gets paid big money and he should know all of this.

Now from Dubas' perspective, I guess he could have done the same thing: Just say he was not interested in coming back. But I think he wanted to continue running the Leafs, just not in the same fashion as before.
Nor for the same $ - after talking it over with his family....

What a circus. When it comes to a point like this, everyone is to blame. Bunch of petty dramatic losers across management including the GM. We need new personnel.

We have no inside info to how it came to this, so have to assume the entire batch is spoiled.

He might very well be a hero in your view, but I doubt the MLSE ownership board will share the same perspective.
Your perspective is based on no greater evidence than mine. Sorry Shanny turfed your boy.

Matthews is the best player to play for the Leafs in many decades. Hart trophy winners don't come around very often. Any outcome that ends with him leaving the franchise is a huge loss. The window for contention closes with his removal full stop. We waited so many years to acquire a player of this calbire and so many here are happy to move on, I don't get it at all..
I don't get why so many are happy with the status quo. If you can't see what Matthews is I can't help you.

Perfect example of trying to spin analytics in your favour when it doesn’t fit your agenda.

Reaching for an excuse that he was up against the opposition’s top line. Blaming the goalie for not making the save.

Justin Holl might be a serviceable defenceman in the regular season when the games are irrelevant and nobody cares, but in the playoffs when it matters and the intensity ratchets up, Holl was atrocious.

But it’s not Holl’s fault that he’s a no-talent hack who belongs in the ECHL at best.

It’s the incompetent coach who insisted on playing him when he was an obvious liability. And the useless GM who figured if he could win an AHL championship with Holl he must be able to win an NHL championship with him too.

Mercifully, Dubas is gone. Keefe and Holl will be gone shortly.

Finally, after a half decade of horrible decisions by a pair of hopelessly inept gimps, the Leafs have done hope for playoff success.
LMAO at your your Avatar...

You only really move on from Matthews if it's his intention to move on, but if not, you make it work and fit things around him. That's how it works with franchise players even if he's not perfect.

Seems like a lot of people are invested in a Matthews will betray Toronto narrative for whatever reason.
Who said it's a "betrayal"? That's fan BS. It's a player looking out for his own best interests ahead of anything else. There's essentially nothing wrong with it, but it is what it is and I don't want "me first" players on my team. You tend not to win with them.

I think the vast majority of fans want Matthews to stay...but at a reasonable AAV and term.

I think most want him back but not if wants to control everything again and hose the GM

I disagree with that. Obviously I want to re-sign Matthews and keep building around him so I'm making a case to justify it. But we have actually already allocated $11.6 million in cap right now and whatever raise he gets to is a smaller percentage upgrade than you think. So the cost of Matthews is largely baked in. The delta between what we pay him now and $13 million is less than Connor Timmins. So you don't really throw it out the window out of frustration.

Also, the cap structure will change after Year 1 of the new contract. John Tavares' contract expires so the Big 4, which unlocks massive spending potential.
Can I ask you an honest question Stephen? Why do you want to keep Matthews? What have the Leafs gained?

Extra butts in the seats? No, SBA is always sold out.

Regular season entertainment? Maybe.

Playoff success? Certainly can't be that.

What value does Matthews actually bring to the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Leafs lost out on tens of millions of playoff dollars over the last few seasons with its core intact. Losing Matthews will not likely hurt their bottom line in ticket revenue or tv/radio revenue. Will lose in sweater sales BUT if they get something good in return that may lead to the playoffs and a ton of money coming in.. Whether the Leafs have become too comfortable/lack a player with a killer instinct is a topic for another discussion. Certainly not one of the core fits that description and if Matthews is available only as rental the chances of getting one of those players or a cost effective top D is unlikely. A new GM has to factor all of that in the decision making process. Every hockey fan has to watching how this plays out.
This^.

Just change Matthews to McDavid and go ask the Oilers' board if they want him back.

Matthews is not a team.

He was also arguably our best player in round 1.

He is usually the best player on the ice.

It's quite obvious from league history that franchise players (which Matthews obviously is) are treated differently terms of team priority/treatment.

Pretending otherwise is silly, regardless of how much you may want it to be different
What I want is irrelevant.

What you want is irrelevant.

What the MLSE Board wants is irrelevant.

After July 1 all that is relevant is what Matthews wants. That can't happen.

One narrative we keep hearing now is how bloated the Leafs front office, we are uniquely suited to carry on competently without the GM.
That is actually true..

They were joking about that on the radio recently, because the Leafs have the largest management group in the NHL, with Dubas having 6 assistant GMs alone and each one of those AGM had an assistant.

Even with Dubas and Spezza gone now the Leafs still have 4 acting assistant GMs and a whole lot of lower level staff. (excluding even coaching and business and finance people etc).

If people are worried about the entry draft were Leafs only have 3 picks but have a Dir of scouting and management and a boat load of scouts.

The day to day operations are still running along uninterupted other than now Brandon Pridham is answering the trade calls phone.

For me personally, I believe we can win with Matthews and Nylander on the team.

I don't think we can win with Tavares anywhere at all.

I don't think we can win with Marner along with Matthews and Tavares.

One person over 10mil only. I'd chose Matthews. I also think Nylander can carry the 2nd line if constructed properly.

So yes to Matthews and Nylander, no to Tavares and Marner. Imo.

Marek - the news I got was, everyone aside from the top were shocked by the announcement. It's one of those "where were you when" in the Leafs organization

- Source Penguin Kyle.

Kyle proposed a streamline as he feared info might get out (this off season) and decisions wouldn't be made fast enough.

When this info got out, people weren't too happy about the proposed idea.

MLSE won't be too happy about the info that has come out this week.

A player on the Leafs didn't feel confident that Matthews would have signed by/at July 1st even with Dubas.

This player later mentioned he feels/felt thar Matthews will sign like Pastrnak did in Boston (not amount/term, but get the deal done eventually.)

Reiterated that the Leafs have permission to talk to him and he'll get a long look.

Friedman speculates names and they're terrible names. Gillis, Snow and earlier mentioned Wilson
