If you think about it, it seems that Dubas may have clashed with all of Lou, Hunter, Babcock and eventually Shanahan.

His modus operandi was to surround himself with ex-Soo Greyhound personnel that would "owe" him.

Perhaps Kyle has trouble playing with others?

The Dubas Fan Boi Club was desperately hoping their hero could pave the way for a league full of GMs who’ve never played hockey in their life but can study spreadsheets and spout ridiculous statistics like percentage of neutral zone puck possession during afternoon games on the road in December.

Unfortunately, Dubas failed miserably in Toronto and his firing has caused the dreams of the analytic apologists.
Um, excuse me that's EXPECTED percentage of neutral zone puck possession during afternoon games on the road in December.

Kyle Dubas is praised because he...

Never won anything significant during his time here
Cleaned out our picks for the foreseeable future in an attempt to win
Overpaid our core players and gave them NMCs all at once.
His own contract was timed with the NMCs activating.
Had possibly the highest turnover of any team for roster (not good for gelling a team)
Essentially conspired to have a good coach removed in Babcock.
Refused to fire a coach that was consistently not achieving.

This is your media professionals Toronto. Unsub, Unfollow before you start taking hits to your IQs.

It really is bizarre. I can understand others (media, fans) liking Dubas and thinking he's the best of the current available crop (which I personally disagree with) but the way he's being elevated as the team's only hope as if he guided them to dynasty is very strange.

I'll be just as upset if MLSE hires a GM that comes in and sucks for the next 5 years and wins nothing. But guess what? Dubas didn't win anything meaningful either. One single playoff round. His whole tenure was doing less with more. If the new guy stinks it doesn't mean Dubas suddenly did well... It means they both failed.

As for any of the core having issue with Dubas being let go, they can follow him out the door because they haven't won anything either.

Kyle clashed with Lou so much that every time the Islanders were in town they hung out.

you folks know absolutely nothing about your favorite team and it shows.

Google is your friend, folks.

try googling the words "may" or "perhaps"

Great! Again good job having the epiphany but you are now in the middle of the journey and still having to meet the deadline as the scenario doesn't have the solution yet. Now how can he get to that deadline without that said option is the next part of the said scenario which is where you are getting stuck at

You agree with me Shanahan should have had the foresight which you value dearly to have other options ready if he knew that option initially he went with didn't work out and now that he has to choose a different car, or GM to do work for our Leafs he is just hoping on dumb sheer luck and praying to hockey gods

You seem to want to force the situation that one has to be in the middle of the journey. Like I said, I wouldn't have gone for the journey without checking on which car is the best car. Epiphany it seems is something that you had, I on the other hand had always been clear about how the journey should have began always

Yes Shanahan should have had the foresight and never hired dubas as a GM or should have canned him at least after the habs series. Rewarding incompetence is something I do not support, and panic is not my style no matter how much dubas shills paint the doom and gloom scenario whether on the boards, on twitter or the so called sports journalists who have zero integrity when it comes to journalism. But hey.... once again its just me.... valuation incompetence and doing things just for the sake of doing things and preaching to the world "panic scenario lets panic because -> reasons" seems more like a hollywood plot than a thoughtful actionable behavior that lays the foundation of a better tomorrow

P.S. Leafs navigated without a GM before when they fired Nonis and drafted Nylander and traded Kessel. Bending over backwards to a guy with zero integrity that says i don't want the job, then doesn't have any discussions and then sends in a new financial package to leverage the situation that he himself created (NMCs and what not); that's they guy you wanted to continue? really? You may want to reward incompetence and dishonesty but I'd prefer the organization as a whole stay away from such an individual.

Leafs are going to be fine. In fact, they are going to be better for it! The culture shift has already begun with what Shanahan did to Dubas. "It is about the logo not about you Dubas ;)"

Unbelievably strange

Exactly.

Right.

It almost makes me wonder if there was a lot of issues going with the contracts and Dubas just made crazy demands in order to get out before the storm hit. It was more of a tactical retreat and that's why he did what he did.

He probably knows if he took full blame for the loss of Matthews it would all come down on him.

If this is the worst things get we’re fine. If Pridham is in Calgary next week and Dubas poaches Wes Clark to Pittsburgh, I guess Dr Wickenheiser can run the show in her spare time.
Not sure if i responded to this .. but yeah of course.. if we continue to lose key people it gets messy.. BUT.. until that happens i just want to wait and see what the first piece of business gets done and go from there..

One by one

Old Heads: Get rid of Dubas!! Hes a spreadsheet guy

*Shanny wanted puck possession*

*Dubas wanted grit*

*Shanny is more analytical than Dubas*

Old Heads: Excited for the grit that Shanny is gonna bring!

We live in a sim.

The rumour is MLSE wanted dubas to fire keefe and trade atleast one core player. Dubas countered with a financial package including full autonomy which was his way of getting out of firing keefe and or changing the core. Dubas was never firing keefe ever or trading any of the 4 core guys, he fell on his sword.
Now this makes some sense.

Dubas got rid of himself. Probably all the NMC BS was about to blow up in his face and he didn't want to get labeled. Look at what he said in a presser and the crazy demand. He probably exited on purpose with the joke counter offer.

Was letting Lou go, a mistake? Wonder if Shanny had a mulligan what he would do?

Exactly. Eyes forward, it's a new chapter. Get some steel in your bones, git'er done.

Andora, feel like you're one of the few adults in the room?
Lol.. i dont know about that.. i know i have been through things like this. Shoes drop or surprises but timelines still need to be hit etc.. get to work

I just dont see the panic on the time thing nor do i attach to the notion that with dubas gone everything stops - it is not like he took all the spreadsheets with him. We will see how professional and gritty so to speak this office can be as they move ahead but i dont see any LEGIT reason they cant get this stuff done..

So the new and inexperienced GM hired a whole bunch of new and inexperienced people to be his AGMs.

What a waste of office space. What a waste of money. Only Dubas could come up with something that dumb.

This is what happens when you give a stick boy from junior hockey the job as GM in the NHL.

Agree with the sentiment except I think Hayley Wickenheiser is an excellent role model. She did all she could in hockey, then went to med school and is now helping out as a medical doctor at hospitals. IMO that's absolutely remarkable.

I don't even know how many lifetimes I'd need to do what Hayley has done thus far in just one lifetime.

P.S. and yes Dubas era will be regarded as an era wasted. How someone has done so little when so much was given to them. you need special kind of incompetence to do that

So if Shanny agrees to his demand, does it mean he agrees to fire keefe and trade at least one core player? Why not just say, I'll take the extension but I am not firing keefe or trading a core player ? Why go through a charade than paints you in a bad light ??

Right, so when does the work start?
I dont really understand what you are saying.. everyday you wake up with no notifcation on your phone means they didnt work today?

2 weeks of work go into one 10 minute press conference and a 5 second to post tweet

I’m curious to know as well. It is kinda funny that the trades were reported as though they would definitely improve the team. Like Mirtle got a glimpse into some alternate universe where the trades happened and the Leafs won the cup.

As opposed to THIS universe where none of the trades seemed get the Leafs closer to the end goal at all.

Maybe he was finally shipping Holl out of town 😂

5 days ago Shanny was willing to pay 4 million a year for Dubas to stay. Didn't critique a single major hockey ops decision by Dubas in the press conference yesterday either.

Not sure I'd expect him to think radically different about things as he searches for a replacement. He might, but I don't see anything tangible pointing that way

if he critiqued any single major hockey ops decision by dubas, he would have gotten beaten to shreds as to how as a president he allowed such things to pass

People still don't believe me it seems, it was shocking for me to begin with that Shanny was planning on extending dubas; it was a cosmic hand that somehow did not let this go through. Hockey gods it seems are finally taking mercy on the Leafs nation.

I've never seen this thing playout in the NHL where preseident/ownership is about to extend an executive only to rescind the proposal at the very last second. There is something very cosmic about it. I don't care if people laugh at me for believing this but the scenario that has played out just feels very unnatural

I am feeling cup runs within 3-5 years if we just re-tool; or within 7-9 years if we rebuild.

If there's any truth to this, Shanahan did the right thing. I've read a range of numbers online ($7M+). Sorry, Kyle. You're good but you ain't that good.

Keep him around, and Matthews/Marner get the ultimate payday (again).

The new GM has Murray to get rid of somehow

An 11M Tavares for two more years

A questionable goaltending and defense situation

Missing at least 2 centers, probably 3 because Tavares can't drive play now

A broken core that can't get it done who are all about to get NMC and modified NTC clauses kicking in

That's brutal, Tavares is also a long term unmovable problem

Your being very nice about how bad this situation is, there's worse jobs around but this isn't a good situation and we've burned through a lot of our picks
The fact our core are entitled brats who pout when they don't have gobs of money thrown at them isn't exactly ideal either

This team needs a GM who's not going to take any ****, this is a business

My late grandfather used to say that to improve society one has to leave it in a better condition than they found it; and if every generation did that bad things from society will hopefully one day disappear.

If we apply the same logic, dubas has left the team in a much worse condition when he found it, we just need to get to square 1 before we can even think about improving things
