Ottawa seems to be gaining traction as a Dubie destination. I think that would be perfect. Sure they have some young talent, but they’re a million miles from true contender and they’re literally in the Leafs shadow, in every conceivable way. Dubas, enjoy the brown grass, nothing will make it appear more so than the Sens.

Sounds to me like Kyle tried pulling a Marner /Nylander to negotiate and Shanny said see ya!

Hopefully that carries onto future negotiations with players

It can't carry forward into that. They have NMCs kicking in so basically they will leave us a take it or leave it offer and we can counter with a take it or leave it offer. If no agreement, it means trade.

There's nothing to the Ottawa stuff besides complete speculation.

Dorion hasn't been fired. The team is going through a sale. Current ownership isn't going to replace Dorion at this point. The new owner may keep Dorion. The new owner may hire someone else. We don't know who the new owner is, no one does. How can we possibly know who they will hire?

This is the media creating buzz that doesn't exist then reporting that there's buzz about it so they have something to talk about. Part of it is also that they want to fabricate a story that makes the Leafs look even worse.

The new GM has Murray to get rid of somehow

An 11M Tavares for two more years

A questionable goaltending and defense situation

Missing at least 2 centers, probably 3 because Tavares can't drive play now

A broken core that can't get it done who are all about to get NMC and modified NTC clauses kicking in

That's brutal, Tavares is also a long term unmovable problem

Your being very nice about how bad this situation is, there's worse jobs around but this isn't a good situation and we've burned through a lot of our picks
The fact our core are entitled brats who pout when they don't have gobs of money thrown at them isn't exactly ideal either

This team needs a GM who's not going to take any ****, this is a business

I said clearly that the new GM has big things to accomplish and it's probably one of the toughest jobs to enter in right now. What I am trying to explain is that the salary cap of the Toronto Maple Leafs is in a very good place compared to many other situations typically when a GM takes over a new team.

Teams with have moved on from a lot worst contracts than Murrays contract, I'm not worried that he'll be gone. After he's traded, likely before July 1st, the Leafs should have around 15M of cap space. This number obvious changes in a lot of different ways depending on the trades that will happen at some point... whenever they happen.

True, but it is my personal hope he lands there. Pens are fine too, the moment that team turns the building will be half empty.

Curious to know what the moves are they vetoed that Dubas wanted to do.
I’m curious to know as well. It is kinda funny that the trades were reported as though they would definitely improve the team. Like Mirtle got a glimpse into some alternate universe where the trades happened and the Leafs won the cup.

As opposed to THIS universe where none of the trades seemed get the Leafs closer to the end goal at all.

Sounds like the new GM isn't going to have it as easy as the last GM did after being handed the keys. Imagine the pressure coming in from a new team instead of coming in having been in the organization already for 4 years. Hope he can handle it. May have to ask for $10m to compensate him for all of it. :sarcasm:

The difficulty is in the speed. Aside from that, i dont see many openings for teams with our core age and ability.

Our biggest issue is a PPG Centre who just scored the biggest goal in the past 20 years for us and a buyout-able goalie who put up a .900+ save+ season with a decent GSAX

Like I said before you should have checked for Car A before you went on a journey. You made the choice of Car A nobody forced you to choose Car A. If you decide you don't want Car A anymore thats your choice. You feel like ditching Car A and start walking thats your choice.

If it was me, I would have checked whether Car A or Car B or Car X1.....Xn would be the best for the journey before even embarking on a journey. But that's me. having a foresight is something I value ;)
Great! Again good job having the epiphany but you are now in the middle of the journey and still having to meet the deadline as the scenario doesn't have the solution yet. Now how can he get to that deadline without that said option is the next part of the said scenario which is where you are getting stuck at

You agree with me Shanahan should have had the foresight which you value dearly to have other options ready if he knew that option initially he went with didn't work out and now that he has to choose a different car, or GM to do work for our Leafs he is just hoping on dumb sheer luck and praying to hockey gods

Probably already discussed, but I read Dubas asked for access to the company jet - in his contract.

To me means: "I want to come and go as I please...my family needs me home more often"

Which anyone would think..."how committed actually are you?" Family is first, sure... but we need a level of commitment too.

You are correct, but in my opinion, making quick decisions can also be a bad thing, the new GM has roughly 6 weeks to:

1. Decide how he wants this team to play, and how he is going to get his team to play like how he wants with personal.
2. Decide on contracts for Nylander, Matthews if he wants them (more so on Matthews as he has his NTC on July 1st) and now has to sell his vision/idea to Matthews.
3. Decide on if Marner fits his team/vision as he has a full NTC kicking in on July 1st)
4. Figure out free agency etc.

Lot's for the new guy to do within a 6 week window, which leads to hasty decisions and mistakes. At least it will be exciting times for us coming up.
Dubas had to do all those things as well. It's not like there isn't a front office with several qualified people to bridge the gap.
  • If they don't know that basic contract demands of AM and WN by now then Dubas should have been fired.
  • I'm sure there have been a number of internal discussions about Marner, and even if Dubas had been working on something, Pridham and Shanahan should know about it and can continue in the short term. If they don't know what Dubas was doing, he should have been fired.
  • Again, there should already be rough idea of the FA strategy, or Dubas should have been fired. Obviously that would likely change, but any GM worth hiring will already have an idea of how he wants the Leafs to play, and is fully aware of the UFA's available.
I've seen several reorganizations, and people in "critical positions" being either let go or leaving of their own accord, life goes on.

Let's face it, we all wanted things to change, well they're changing.

Shanahan is a moron for even wanting to extend this failure of a GM. Dubas proved his expert negotiating skills. Wouldn’t shock me if players want out now, as they may not get the keys to city on their next deals. But the bigger anchor in this organization is now gone, so hope is on the horizon.
Not buying the players wanting out because their gravy train has been fired. If they do want out, I don't want them here. Do you ?

Guy said he was not sure he wanted to be back because of family reasons, then comes back saying he wants to be back but asks for more money?

What a poor, poor, poor negociation tactic.

Not surprised he got schooled on his core 4 deals negociations.

Better to move on. Shanny did the right thing.

An idiot without a contract goes on tv and starts talking about how great the idea of trading away star players is. Never once thinking removal of the coach should be first or actually brining in a top 6 forward to help.
Just keep digging that hole
They're full of idiots over there. In Toronto, things are done differently. Though those idiots as you say, might hire Dubas in the future.

One doesn't "allow" their boss to "interfere" in their decisions the Boss does so as he sees fit.
No one seems to question the Masai/Webster combo for the Raptors, so why is this different. Perhaps Shanahan gave Dubas autonomy and then saw the mess he was making and stepped in. Why he wanted to extend Dubas is beyond me, but I’m glad he’s gone

Nope, fire them into the sun if they don’t sign decent deals that help the team

you've said this no less than 3 times on this page alone. We get it. Enjoy Brad Travlivig..

Old Heads are happy Dubas is gone til the Leafs start missing the playoffs when they play "hard ball" on their core 4.. Exciting times ahead.

Watch out tho, Brad Travlivig, who traded Tkachuk at his lowest value for a player at his peak value, signed him to a horrendous contract, and now Calgary is stuck with that, is def gonna put his feet in the ground and stop the core 4 from getting money!

To be fair, Shanny doesn't even live in Toronto - he flys in on the MLSE jet from his home in NYC. I think something like this seems odd to outsiders, but it's more common practice in pro sports

Lou was axed because potentially losing Dubas to Colorado scared Shanahan, I’m sure Lou would have kept gong here and perhaps Mark Hunter would eventually get the job. That single threat sent the Leafs on a course of geek hockey failure……….
If you think about it, it seems that Dubas may have clashed with all of Lou, Hunter, Babcock and eventually Shanahan.

His modus operandi was to surround himself with ex-Soo Greyhound personnel that would "owe" him.

Perhaps Kyle has trouble playing with others?

Dorion is a pretty smart guy. His drafting especially had been really decent in the past but they were never allowed to keep a team together due to ownership and lack of funds.

Dorion to my knowledge is also a life long Leafer as well. Can't remember where I heard that, it's sort of like Boudreau though.

Kyle clashed with Lou so much that every time the Islanders were in town they hung out.

you folks know absolutely nothing about your favorite team and it shows.

Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello and now former Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas are known to have a strong relationship, having worked together in Toronto for four years.

That was reinforced not all that long ago.

On the morning of Jan. 23, Lamoriello and Dubas found a quiet area in the Scotiabank Arena stands behind one of the goals, away from the ample media throng that took up residence in the sections tilted above center ice. They hung out throughout the Maple Leafs’ morning skate, during the resurfacing of the ice afterward, and then during the Islanders’ skate, too.

Google is your friend, folks.
