There is no cap against management. It's not even about taking a discount. He wanted to be overpaid like our 4 forwards. All 5 have won little but lined their pockets. Hopefully it stops with the new GM but I doubt it since Shanny is still at the top. He will beg for them to take discounts and they will flip him the bird.

I think this will be the case with the new GM. That's why Shanny wants someone with experience. Unlike 7 seven years ago when he handed the reins to Dubas who was 27 years old.

ahh no he wasnt - one was a Hockey Man for Life - and one was a fraudster ... You think in OHL circles ( where Dubas was plucked from with his fake analytic theories ) that Dubas was considered a better GM / Executive then Hunter - Wake up !!

OHL circles :laugh::laugh: ..

bragging about OHL circles is like being a NFL gm and people try to brag about the NCAA. Wonder how much laughing there was when Dubas got the only real job amongst them.

By OHL circles do you mean “people not good enough at their jobs to be in the NHL” circles? Because that makes sense that they’d back one of their own.
no i am comparing where both guys came from - and what did Dubas do to desreve Shanahan bringing him up to be his Golden Boy ? NOTHING he never won anything in the OHL and they bought him an AHL team to manage ... biggest fraud ever in Hocley and he is now " out of the loop " shanahna exposed him and he wont get another job

I was in the camp that we needed some big changes, but even if you personally dislike Dubas, I don’t see why any fan would be okay with the way this has all gone down.

1. MLSE/Shanny WANTED Dubas as GM. They gave him an offer. They thought he was the best person for the job. If you are someone that’s happy because you thought Dubas did a bad job, management literally disagrees with you.

2. Then after a press conference where Dubas was “emotional” and he asked for too much money, management fired him because they decide they don’t want him/he wasn’t committed.

3. They didn’t have a backup plan at all and are searching for a GM like 50 days before their Franchise player and another star are up for an extension. Their 3rd star player is also the one everyone expects you to ship out.

This is something I’d expect out of Arizona, but judging by the way the other sports teams are currently being run, I genuinely believe there’s something rotten with MLSE right now.

Like it’s seems management made a dumb emotional response to Dubas’s dumb emotional response. We’re not even a decade removed from the 18-wheeler off a cliff Horachek days, and I’m getting PTSD because I see a very clear path to this organization imploding and returning to those days, especially if the players also aren’t happy with the way things are being done.

Do you like Auston Matthews ?

Do you like Auston Matthews if he wants 15M per season ?

How do you come to this conclusion that they ONLY looked at Dubas ?

lol Dubas was an idiot so instead of acknowledging that lets point over there and go yea but look at that guy

I mean it’s the logic everyone gave for Marner/Matthews contracts no? We overpaid Tavares and they do more than he does so he set their contract floors.

Shanahan has done… what exactly in 9 years? The only time he was urgently needed, he had a press conference to say “I have no plan 6 weeks out from the biggest offseason in the past 20+ years, I’ll start thinking after this conference”. Why not ask for Shanahan money when you’re the guy doing the actual work and taking all the flak when things go bad?

Yes and people seem to forget that it was Shanahan that initiated the culture change with the Leafs. He brought the people in to effect the change and later even hired a mentor for KD. At that time LL said the only the thing that would keep KD from becoming GM of the Leafs was KD himself. Ironically the thing that kept KD from remaining as the GM was KD.

In this context Shanny as President should have done a better job imo getting a read on Dubas much earlier.

His statement about being caught off guard by what Dubas' had said I think is pretty telling that the two had pretty severe two way communication issues

It's Shannys job to make sure the front office was running smoothly - which clearly wasn't the case

I read this a couple of different ways and I’ll present some possibilities.

What we saw was the tail end of a power struggle between Shanny and Dubas and it was in Shanahan’s interest to present as innocent to Dubas’ moves so he could have a plausible reason to terminate beyond hockey performance, fire walking himself from perceived hockey department failures. Aka they were both snakes. But Shanny was the bigger one and ate Dubas up.

Or, Dubas maneuvered quickly to sway public opinion in the aftermath of the season knowing he already had a back pocket offer. And there was no way Shanahan or the board could be privy to a power play like that.. unless they all knew Dubas was a bit Machiavellian to begin with. In which case you could say Shanny failed to read the incoming betrayal until it was too late and is incompetent.

if you want to sympathize then sympathize with the people lining up outside the foodbanks b/c they can't afford normal groceries.

sympathizing with dubas? for what? did someone put a gun to dubas' head and said take the job or we'll end your life? or did dubas chose it of his own volition

NOBODY is forced to take the job (athletes, celebs, etc.) that is in the public eye. they are also well compensated for it too.

Dubas got what he deserved.

but more importantly, the Leafs Nation gets what they deserve. Accountability, Fresh Start and FINALLY taking steps towards doing the right things
God I hope your right

Or Dubas hid his true feelings till that "necessary" press conference. Shanny mentioned having multiple hour long convos about the team with Dubas. I think what happened here is Dubas got slighted by going into this year without an extension. And then when they came to him wanting to extend him he thought now I'm desired now I can play my hand. This whole thing was an elaborate play and Dubie was playing two sides of the coin. Two faced rat.
This. Plus he didn't think Shanny would can him and would accept his new financial terms with all the decisions that have to be made this off-season. Didn't think Shanny would look elsewhere. Lol. Points to Dubas' ego. Guy was out to lunch throughout his time here. Should have never gotten the gig.

what do you want Shanahan to do come out yesterday and announce his new GM ? How do yo know he didnt start looking for alternatives after Kyles Power Play on Monday ? Kyle screwed up the best job in Hockey and it looks good on him - The best day in modern leaf History was yesterday .

If you work with a guy every day for 9 years and you don’t know who he is, he’s either the best method actor in the history of the world or you’re bad at reading people and/or not fully invested in your job.

Hold up. He is going to ask Gary Bet99man for advice on picking a GM?

Ok it really is a clown organization. If that's true, he should resign. If he doesn't have a plan B and was basically non existent all season long and has to ask Gary Bet99man, I mean, I can't even lol.

Is Cassidy a future legend though ?
its kind of wild actually that Dubas said that about Keefe then Keefe talks at the post season presser on how the leafs missed an opportunity to win the cup....like wtf? The cup?......holy putting the cart before the horse batman

The process of looking for people should have started as soon as Kyle didn’t commit after the trade deadline, and there should have been a short list of candidates ready to interview as soon as he didn’t sign something the day after the Florida series was over.

You don’t wait for the day after an emergency to “start the process” of thinking about how to deal with an emergency.

He’s probably the highest paid exec in hockey, it’s literally his job to have a plan A through Z and be able to read people and anticipate problems before they happen. What else are his actual job duties if not these things?
