Call me old fashioned but here goes.

Kyle repeatedly losing his shit up in the box while watching games is a bad look for the person running the team.

You want that energy from your players (we don't get that enough) and sometimes the coach (at times) but the guy steering the ship IMO should be calm and cool.
I agree, his antics the last while we’re a bad look and I said it at the time. He was like a child who couldn’t control himself, everyone “cares” but act like you’ve been there, you KNOW the camera is watching. Keefe too, these guys were so unglued all the time, it was kind of amateurish at the end.

Stunning. Wish Dubas stayed. I think this year's results are more on the players than the GM.

Bro you don't do such a huge turnover on the TDL. That was the dumbest thing that dubas did. Then you apply context and look at how Matthews' season had gone (which wasn't that great) and see that Tavares isn't in top 50 in even strength production; no sane GM makes big trade using that context let alone changing almost half the team on TDL.

Roster makeover should be offseason not TDL. At TDL you add help not change the outlook of the team.

One of many reasons why Dubas is a trash GM and why its the best thing that he isn't with the organization anymore

I wonder when Shanahan is held accountable also? 9 years in charge of things, and only one Second Round appearance. He has had a terrible track record, and deserves a large share of the blame for this team's incompetence. Would like to have seen him fired also.

I dont think we have a lot of big Shanny fans around here, yesterday was just a really good day for him is all.

Each previous year would have been a much better time to sack Dubas. Shanny probably only has a job because their in a bind now. He may get an extra year out of this.

The way Shanny spoke, it sounded like someone representing the organization. Typically that's the vibe I get from other sports executives, kind of the way you expect it. You don't really get a sense of an individual not a lot of personal editorializing, unless it's a real meme character, like Brian Burke or someone who's infamously incompetent like a Jim Benning.

With Kyle, it always felt like there was a demarcation between his own branding and the Leafs. He had his own project within the project, and seems like people don't even see an organization left with him leaving. I don't agree with that take at all.

I don’t know how anyone can read how Shanahan acted as the shadow GM, nixing moves Dubas wanted to make and forcing him to make moves he didn’t, and look at how the contract situation played out letting Dubas twist in the wind for a year before abruptly firing him after Kyle took week in comparison and think Shanahan is in the right or isn’t a problem. What respectable GM is going to want Brendan looking over their shoulder scrutinizing every move they make? What has Shanahan accomplished as an executive that we should be comfortable that he’s still here to run the show while apparently pissing off nearly everyone in management?

Let it be said here that Brad Treliving is now the favourite to replace him as Leafs GM because there are so few obvious options who meet Shanahan’s requirement that “having an experienced general manager would be an attractive quality.”

The others that fall into that category are Marc Bergevin, Peter Chiarelli, Chuck Fletcher, Ray Shero, Ron Hextall, Jim Benning and Dave Nonis.

Hoping this is Johnston just talking about what is going on in his head, and there is no source telling him this.

This is basically a list of "hire anyone but these people"

Here is some information from James Mirtle of The Athletic regarding former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas' future:

Given how complex the Leafs roster decisions are going to be this offseason, getting that GM hire right will be imperative. Without Dubas, the Leafs front office is low on experienced hands, and with so many currently in place contemplating their futures, the exodus could create even more uncertainty as the draft and free agency approach at the end of next month.

As for Dubas’ future, while he stated on Monday that he didn’t anticipate quickly relocating to a new role, the thinking around the league right now is that his views may change if he receives a significant offer in a role with full autonomy in the coming months. The situation in Ottawa, in particular, could be intriguing, with new, deep-pocketed ownership and a young roster on the rise.

A front office with the rival Senators that included Dubas as president and Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson in supporting roles would certainly make things interesting in the Atlantic Division.

Not that the Maple Leafs will need any help creating headlines at this point given the organizational upheaval that is going to continue to unfold this offseason.

The owner isn't going to come in and instantly fire a GM that has done an at least solid job overall.

Not to mention that the process to even become an owner of that team might drag into next season

Been one day since getting canned and he's already trying to weasel his way into another job that's currently filled

The sens aren't going to pay him 4 mil also

From Mirtle's article today, Dubas and Shanny were at odds for a while. Shanny had blocked a few transactions for several reasons Dubas wanted to make which caused frustration in the management group, and Shanny had suggested a few moves that Dubas didn't agree with. Apparently the moves that weren't made could have helped the Leafs advance further in the playoffs. Shanny usually won those battles because of his stature.
Some others might also leave with Dubas gone, while others could stay on, but Mirtle mentions people like Ryan Hardy, Darryl Metcalf and Hayley Wickenheiser who could be at risk. There is no guarantee if even Pridham will stay.
Says Treliving is a front runner for the job, but says Doug Armstrong is a candidate too if Blues allow it.
On coaching, Joel Q is keen to the idea of Toronto, but it seems unlikely Leafs will make a controversial hiring right now. Keefe is likely to be let go, and seems Leafs will hire an experienced high profile coach.
What are the moves he wanted to make and why do they think it would have helped? Need names!!

Don't forget this praise Dubas received,

NHL Agent Poll: Maple Leafs’ Kyle Dubas Deemed Most Generous GM

Relationships between teams and agents are among the most interesting balancing acts in the NHL, in which both parties search for a suitable cocktail of amicability and respect.

A recent poll released by PuckPedia, a website that tracks contracts and salary cap situations in the NHL, suggests that Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas is — for better or worse — cozier with agents than the rest of his peers combined.

Question : To get a great deal for your client, what GM would you most want to deal with? (25 anonymous agents)

Dubas received 29 percent of the vote, while no other GM received more than six percent.

Let’s focus on why agents might feel this way.

Dubas, who has only been Toronto’s GM since May 2018, opened up the checkbook and handed out four sizable contracts in a 15-month span (to John Tavares, Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner). Those contracts combine for 24 years and more than $240 million. More specifically, the trio of Matthews ($11.634 million AAV), Tavares ($11 million AAV) and Marner ($10.893 million AAV) possess three of the seven highest salary cap hits in the league — creating an unprecedented extent of top-heaviness.

Player agents know when they want to get their clients top dollar on contracts it’s Kyle Dubas they hope is on the other side of the line and in charge of handing them out.
How does every other GM get 6% of the votes each when there was only 25 agents polled?

1/25 = 4%
2/25 = 8%

Don’t trust those results at all. Extremely small sample size and they can’t math.

Also, 29% of Dubas equals 7.25 agents.

Not an unreasonable take, but politician Shanahan was very cagey to say Dubas' dismissal wasn't related to hockey performance but more on the loyalty, uncertainty and hint of bad faith negotiating, rendering him unfit to represent the Leafs. So he basically firewalled himself from criticism of hockey failure and will live to fight another day.

I saw on Twitter Treliving is leading the betting odds for it - and generally they're usually right. So buckle up lol

I don't know because shannahan didn't act like the shadow GM and Dubas tried to strong arm him for more money.

His literal mouth piece is saying he might have nixed "some" trades that may have made us better. While also being vague

That's far from being a shadow GM

His contract is up in two years and if the retool implodes he'll also be gone

He came off as clueless, but he did something a lot of people like, so they think it was a good day.

It was a bad look for him, Dubas, and the organization.
Shanahan wanted Dubas to return at a price (4M) though not at any price/cost (6-7M and full control). It'd be somewhat akin to a GM wanting a player to return at 4M and with some NTC protection but balking once the ask suddenly becomes 6-7M with a NMC.

Which part(s) of the presser do you believe demonstrated Shanahan as being clueless?

At least he won't be forced to trade any young player, he hasn't done well with that.

And there are no big contracts he needs to sign without evaluating the players, he also hasn't done well with that.

I sense dark times ahead.

Burke had the same issues with MLSE, so did every single GM we’ve had this millennium. We haven’t had a GM with full autonomy, bell/rogers and the teachers need their valuable hockey input heard via Shanahan or whatever other empty suit they pay to be their little servant.

Mirtle lost his meal ticket, why not just ask a Dubas family member what they think. No offence but the only media guys coming to his defence are in his contacts. Who cares, self interest much?
