Great story by Doug Maclean on the radio .... He met Dubas 9-10 years ago. Dubas asked to have coffee with him because he wanted to get advice. I think Maclean said Gord Miller was there as well, because he was friends with Dubas and Maclean. Dubas was working for SOO and he thought owners were contemplating firing him, so Dubas wanted Macleans advice on how to talk to the owners and win them over.

step one: put on glasses.
step two: use big words.
step three: dont tell anyone you went to Brock.

I wonder why Matthews was handed everything after his ELC.

Now the truth is starting to come out. So Dubas was always conflicted during the Matthews negotiation.

I guess the question at this point is where was Shanahan when those fat contracts were being handed out? Surely he must’ve approved them. He’s not blameless here at all.

Conflict of interest much? Nobody from MLSE told Dubas "hey you cant have the same agent as Matthews."?

Edit: this was worse than the Muskoka Five. Dubas has the same agent as Matthews. Dubas and Keefe are joined at the hip.

Coach cant say anything to Matthews. Matthews will tell agent, agent will send angry face emoji to Dubas.
This shitstorm is only beginning. Wait until this information becomes more widespread and understood.

The gm changed himself. He just stood in front of the hockey world and said, yea I'm not sure if I want this job. Here we're asking our players to show heart, appreciate being here....and the gm stands up and say, yea I'm not sure if my hearts in this.

MLSE shouldn't be let off the hook for allowing this to go on for so long, but they may have lucked into making the right decision at the end of it.

IMO this past week has revealed just how far the rot runs in this group. The issues we see with this core are a perfect reflection of their GM.

From the mercenary attitudes, to the notions of both Dubas and Matthews trying to redefine the pay scale. The total lack of accountability and inflated egos. No wonder why the players love this guy, they have become perfect reflections of him. Entitled losers.

Well said.

This might be good news and in the end this can be terrible disaster for this organization. We'll be seen.

10 year rebuild coming?

And Dubas will use the court of public opinions and state that AM wants out.
There is no trade that could be a fair deal with AM unless the other player coming our way is McD, or Drai, or Kuch, or Makar, or Mack, or No.1 Overall pick.

You read too much into Dubas is too afraid of the backsplash from AM not returning.....I will bet that if Dubas trade AM, MM, Willie and JT for nothing, ofcourse it will be bad in the beginning but if the team win then win in playoffs then the Cup, nobody will care about those trades.

If Dubas is really afraid of being run out of town with AM trade, thats only means he doesn't believe he can build a Cup Winning Team without AM. That in itself is stupid bc AM been playing in the league for 7 years and AM didn't play in any of those Cup Winning Teams.

I'd rather rebuild than have players who care about who the GM is. I love Tavares for his desire to be a leaf. McDavid doesn't hide his love for this team either.

I think Matthews actually likes it here... He's close friends with Bieber. Toronto has it's perks for him.

Remember the rumor was Shanahan wanted Matthews to be captain and Dubas apparently wanted Tavares.

Let's make a big change, captaincy to Matthews (with a long term contract), A to Tavares/Reilly Trade Marner for young D help. Marners constant complains about media on Toronto is part of the disease and problems with this team (excuses). If you can get Mcavoy you do it any day of the week and twice on Sunday and give him an A. I think I heard Futa suggest it might be a possibility on the radio (but I'm 99% sire Boston never does it).

It's the maple leafs, they are always in the middle of a 10 year rebuild or tearing down a 10 year rebuild. They just never hit that "can actually win a cup" state. I really don't think they will win a cup in the next 100 years, too many clowns in business suits running the show.

How did Dubas go from asking Doug Maclean for tips on how to convince SOO owners not to fire him.. to being boy genius hired by the leafs in what seems like less than a years time?

Dubas played the beta role perfectly, right up to his last days - - small and unassuming in stature with ridiculously oversized glasses, a spreadsheet analytics nerd, talked about inclusion and diversity ad nauseam, called a press conference where he snivelled and bemoaned how stressful his multi million dollar job with ZERO accountability is.

In the #Me Too era, he was the perfect face for the franchise.

I love Tavares for his desire to be a leaf.

If pyjama boy really wanted to be a Leaf so badly, why didn’t he take a hometown discount instead of gobbling up $11M per with that boat anchor of a contract?

Jason Spezza was a guy who wanted to be a Leaf and was happy to take a minimum salary deal when he could have clearly got much more than that.

Corey Perry is another guy who wanted to be a Leaf and would have taken a minimum deal.

Since then, both Perry and Spezza have been infinitely better playoff performers than Pyjama Boy.

Dubas at his press conference that Shanahan didn't want him to have....starts the presser off talking 28 seconds about the teams disappointing finish, then proceeds to talk 55 seconds about his own contract situation before opening it up to questions. Lol Dubas certainly has built a culture here.

Shanny is on thin ice. The man Shanny just endorsed to the board and got board approval to extend is suddenly unsure about the role.

That is embarrassing for Shanny. Shanny and the board got blindsided by it. Then it becomes clear that money is a big factor.

Thats not how business should be conducted. That’s unprofessional and frankly disrespectful and dishonest.
Something doesn't add up here. Either Shanahan misunderstood the negotiation with Dubas and his agent or Dubas wanted out and was trying to guage what he could get away with and what his $ value is to the Leafs. Or this is just an absolute blunder by Dubas, posturing at the presser and trying to negotiate a better deal, but ultimately overplaying his hand.

There’s nothing to misunderstand.

Dubas is a loser negotiator and once again lost another negotiation, this time resulting in him losing his own employment.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone honestly lol

Judd Moldover (Matthews' agent) =/= Chris Armstrong (Dubas' agent)

You don't have enough information to say that. We don't even know how truthful Shanahan is being or what information he left out.

No. Jesus, the team is good, and some GM is walking in to a great scenario. Burke walking in to Murray's team scenario.

It's to much here, there are tough contract negotiations coming up with a few of the elite players in the NHL? Boo hoo, what a tough situation. It's enviable. What becomes of AM, MM and WM? Oh, these are good problems people. I can only ever think of JT waltzing out of NYI as an example of any star ever leaving on a middle contract.. why are we so concerned? It's not like they don't know, it'll get done here, one way or the other.

Million times, but he did take the discount. The hate on JT is silly, people don't like ufa contracts, get it, they almost all suck. He's done as expected, in terms of ugh contracts, earned.
