He had a weird vibe in the press conference right? And it was unusually detailed. Feels like there's a lot going on there.
Agreed.

I am sure he had exploratory meetings with people in his group of potential replacements. Nothing was confirmed between he and Kyle all season. That makes it on Shanny to ensure he doesn't get caught with his pants down. Can you imagine if Shanny messes this up? He would be next so I am sure there are things in place.

Probably Pridham, lets see.

The MLSE board could have taken care of the GM contract any time they wanted. Either via a Dubas extension or by an external search for someone else. There was zero need for this to unfold the way it did
Yeah seems like there is a lots of blame to go around.
Be nice if they could just be normal, boring and successful.

It sounded like MLSE didn’t want to extend last year and rightfully so given the results.

This failure was all on Dubas given there was a framework in place (in March) approved by the board that was worked out with Dubas and his agent’s collaboration.

In the end He was noncommittal to the task at hand, was greedy and put Shanny in a very difficult position.

If that is the kind of leader he is that is what the players will emulate.

If your GM cannot commit to his own plan of his own making what makes you think the players will.

Ownership ultimately decided at the last minute to extend Dubas' and he said no. That was the risk they took by not having a GM in place leith a long term fine the start of this season.

It's fair to say Dubas' hadn't earned it. Then they simply should have gone with someone else months ago.

Imo overall that's not on Dubas. That's a risk that was well understood by having a lame duck GM for several months

Though it should be expected of anyone in the front office.

Imo the fact that Shanny took his time to speak until Friday is more suspect than Dubas' speaking his mind on Monday
Shanny wanted to wait until him and Dubas had something to announce, Dubas never should've gotten in front of the media like Shanny suggested. So unprofessional by Dubas.

Can’t believe how quickly this franchise went from just having a little bit of uncertainty around it to the same drama-riddled joke it was before Shanahan came aboard. This whole situation has been handled so piss-poorly I can’t believe it. God knows the shit media in this city is only too happy.
The only "drama" is from butt hurt Dubasites that can't accept that their hero is gone. The remaining front office and new hires will do what is necessary and the TEAM will be just fine.

Doesn't the organization have a motivation to not look like it's flying by the seat of its pants

Like wouldn't that be a stronger bargaining position, to say there's people you're looking at already
In fairness, the decision to not renew the contract of Dubas was just made. I'd guess that Shanahan began compiling a list of names not long after making that aforementioned decision though and there's no real need to divulge any of that info publicly.

Dubas was in no position to counter-offer for alot more money...the team he has been building has been a playoff failure. Shanahan gave him a good offer with good term. Dubas negotiated through the press on Monday and made everyone wait...he thought he had Shanahan by the balls when he emailed Shanahan on Thursday to tell him he was ready to take the job again after having his agent up the financial terms of the contract.

He came across as someone who was trying to save face.

He has nothing to save face for with fans, so my assumption is that he knows he's on thin water with those above him - my suspicions Are that he's received a very firm dressing down by those above him. That was not the behavior of a president who has everything under control

We’ll see. It’s a very delicate time with so many key contracts about to be due up. This time next year we could be a playoff-less team with our current core players either gone or about to walk. But at least the young guy with the glasses won’t be in charge.

Not a single member of the media asked how this would impact the Matthews or Nylander contract situations.

Absolutely pathetic from the Toronto hockey media lol
Why? The stance should be if you don't like the GM... well.... BYE!

The inmates have run the asylum under Dubas. There's a new sheriff in town now.

If the GM of the team matters that much to them then they weren't meant for it anyway.

I think the GM of the team matters very much to them, but not for the reasons of trying to win.

Its not a fun place to lose in, but can be fantastic with even a little success.

Marner has already gone back and forth with the fanbase and Media, Matthews is starting to take heat. The idea that this is a cushy situation doesnt really make sense to me.

I will give Shanny credits and worship him to death if he does what I am about to propose.

Sign AM as the GM and he will become the first GM/Player on the team, his GM contract is 12mil and player contract is 2mil both for 8 yrs. The GM contract have a clause in it that state as long as he doesn't get another GM's job, AM will be paid out in full even if he is not GM of the Leafs.

Sign Willie to a similar contract except as AGM and the amount is AGM for 7mil and the player contract for 2mil.

Not like they have real MGT power.

Or just sell the boys the story of Hakimi and sign AM's mum to a AGM contract for 13mil and Willie's mum contract for 8mil and their players contract to 1mil.

Solve all problems except for winning the Cup, but by next year, the Leafs will have a lot of free cap space to sign players.

Does anyone know how long I have to keep reading people dunking on "Dubas Posters"? It's not interesting. The reverse isn't either.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, the board has always squared off against itself, but it didn't interest me then and not now either.

this just seems really weird to me. its been reported the offsr from MLSE was in the 4-5 mil per area which would have made dubas one of the higher paid GM’s. even though on the surface it seems like this was a money issue, and we won’t know the real issue but I actually don’t think it’s a money issue. Dubas didn’t want to come back and this was his way of doing that, co7nter offering something ridiculous that he knew his Counter would be declined.

so you ask, what was the real reason dubas didn’t want to come back. My take all along is this is matthews related and I’ll tell you why. sometime after the leafs last playoff game and Monday, it’s my own speculation that dubas had a frank conversation with matthews on if he was really intending to resign. Matthews tells him that it was my intention to resign when you gave me that 5 yr contract, time has changed and I’m likely not resigning. So now dubas can’t go back to being a gm of the leafs. He now knows matthews screwed him making him think he would resign when he gave him that 5 yr contract and dubas doesn’t want to be at the helm when matthews walks, as dubas and his wife (just or unjust) would be hated letting storied franchises best player ever walk in their prime.

now you might ask, why wouldn’t dubas just trade him then if he knows matthews is going to walk? Because dubas loses this trade 100/100 times. Matthews has one year left, went from a 60 goal scorer to a 40 goal scorer and a no show in the 2nd round and has had some sort of chronic wrist injury which may or may not heal 100%. Also factor in that dubas trade partners are limited to like 3-4 other GM’s. dubas is screwed either way. imho that is why dubas countered with a much higher offer, wasn’t because of money but because dubas didn’t want to be the gm when matthews walks and him and his family take the heat for it.

This place is a distaster. The arguments are idiotic hyperbole at times like this. Well its a disaster at the best of times, but summer HFBoards are where brain cells go to die

Fans get a reset now, we can choose our sides shortly
It’s a whole new world.

Slow news day, lol.

For real, it will be like this non stop. Nomatter who the new GM is, until he wins the Cup with the team or at least make it to ECF, the Dubas fans will always compare to the new GMs. It will only die down when the new GM gets better results.

That's a nice theory...then he's weaker than we all thought...good thing he was let go.

WHo cares? He WAIVED a surefire backup to bring in a known hothead that bled points all year and we literally missed the playoffs losing the qualifier to Columbus.

Oh and we gave up a 1st to dump Marleau for cap space that year. LOL

DISASTER
Yes WHO CARES. Its a backup goalie who played ONE good season with the Leafs in 18 games after having a OK season the year before. After he left the Leafs he got worse every year except for a good 5 game playoff stretch with the Canes.

And again why does Lou not get at least some of the blame for signing Marleau to begin with for 3 years?

Also if these are what you call 'disaster' moves then what do you call the Matt Martin and Zaitzev deals? Good moves? LOL.
