this just seems really weird to me. its been reported the offsr from MLSE was in the 4-5 mil per area which would have made dubas one of the higher paid GM’s. even though on the surface it seems like this was a money issue, and we won’t know the real issue but I actually don’t think it’s a money issue. Dubas didn’t want to come back and this was his way of doing that, co7nter offering something ridiculous that he knew his Counter would be declined.

so you ask, what was the real reason dubas didn’t want to come back. My take all along is this is matthews related and I’ll tell you why. sometime after the leafs last playoff game and Monday, it’s my own speculation that dubas had a frank conversation with matthews on if he was really intending to resign. Matthews tells him that it was my intention to resign when you gave me that 5 yr contract, time has changed and I’m likely not resigning. So now dubas can’t go back to being a gm of the leafs. He now knows matthews screwed him making him think he would resign when he gave him that 5 yr contract and dubas doesn’t want to be at the helm when matthews walks, as dubas and his wife (just or unjust) would be hated letting storied franchises best player ever walk in their prime.

now you might ask, why wouldn’t dubas just trade him then if he knows matthews is going to walk? Because dubas loses this trade 100/100 times. Matthews has one year left, went from a 60 goal scorer to a 40 goal scorer and a no show in the 2nd round and has had some sort of chronic wrist injury which may or may not heal 100%. Also factor in that dubas trade partners are limited to like 3-4 other GM’s. dubas is screwed either way. imho that is why dubas countered with a much higher offer, wasn’t because of money but because dubas didn’t want to be the gm when matthews walks and him and his family take the heat for it.
Then don't let AM walks for nothing.
It is that simple.
Any teams in the league barring a few would trade for AM even without an extension in place bc they hope they can convince him to sign.

Lol.. ya, good sir/madame, it is not my first rodeo, t'is true.
Sir is fine, lol. I know Gabriel might be confusing, lol.

Yes WHO CARES. Its a backup goalie who played ONE good season with the Leafs in 18 games after having a OK season the year before. After he left the Leafs he got worse every year except for a good 5 game playoff stretch with the Canes.

And again why does Lou not get at least some of the blame for signing Marleau to begin with for 3 years?

Also if these are what you call 'disaster' moves then what do you call the Matt Martin and Zaitzev deals? Good moves? LOL.
So missing the playoffs and burning a 1st because you decided to fix something that isn't broken is no big deal..LOL.

Marleau was a great mentor for AM and Marner. Kept them grounded. Now they show up to work in sweatpants with purses. There was no need to buy him out. WHy? So you could get Codi Cici? LOL

Martin I also liked. Gave a young AM a little swagger.

Zaitsev wasn't great. But I think Baby Mamma drama ended that dude.

Does anyone know how long I have to keep reading people dunking on "Dubas Posters"? It's not interesting. The reverse isn't either.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, the board has always squared off against itself, but it didn't interest me then and not now either.
Well, tell your mod friends that they can make it stop. BTW, I see more whining from the pro Dubas posters than the reverse. The realist fans are happy. The former GM's fans are butt hurt and can't move on.

That gawd the team can finally move in a positive direction now that the albatross has been turfed! Now the work of finding the dressing room cancer and excising it can begin. It took at least 3 playoffs too long.

This place is a distaster. The arguments are idiotic hyperbole at times like this. Well its a disaster at the best of times, but summer HFBoards are where brain cells go to die

Always been true Easy lol.. even in my heyday I had to take a breather in summer. Can't see the break right now, too much up, but at some point after the waters settle, see you in Septmeber.

Fans get a reset now, we can choose our sides shortly
It’s a whole new world.

And we shall take a blood oath ontoith which side we stand, irreversible in nature, as opinion may not evolve.

I thought we just alternated on an inverse scale to the previous GM? I think theres an age of GM multiplier to keep it interesting.

Oh god please no, not an inverse and opposite reaction. There's no chance we hire 1970's Scotty Bowman and we're all on board?

Lou unsurprisingly went on to have far more playoff success on the Island sans JT than Dubas did with a team full of elite ELCs.

It's over. Clearly hiring Dubas was the mistake many of us said it was.

He came across as someone who was trying to save face.

He has nothing to save face for with fans, so my assumption is that he knows he's on thin water with those above him - my suspicions Are that he's received a very firm dressing down by those above him. That was not the behavior of a president who has everything under control

He seemed like he was eager to be believed. I was expecting more matter of fact.

I did say both sides, obviously today the ice is tilted a bit.

I don't mind the idea of a new GM at all, time for a fresh look. Weird ass how it went down.

Modding the Leaf board sucks lol.. just so much volume. Not going to go high horse, just will say that the use of the report button and moving on, over the reply button, helps. No one can keep up with it all at the salary level offered.

your not getting the return fans think they can get. Dubas knows this. Your just not.
And Dubas will use the court of public opinions and state that AM wants out.
There is no trade that could be a fair deal with AM unless the other player coming our way is McD, or Drai, or Kuch, or Makar, or Mack, or No.1 Overall pick.

You read too much into Dubas is too afraid of the backsplash from AM not returning.....I will bet that if Dubas trade AM, MM, Willie and JT for nothing, ofcourse it will be bad in the beginning but if the team win then win in playoffs then the Cup, nobody will care about those trades.

If Dubas is really afraid of being run out of town with AM trade, thats only means he doesn't believe he can build a Cup Winning Team without AM. That in itself is stupid bc AM been playing in the league for 7 years and AM didn't play in any of those Cup Winning Teams.

Ownership ultimately decided at the last minute to extend Dubas' and he said no. That was the risk they took by not having a GM in place leith a long term fine the start of this season.

It's fair to say Dubas' hadn't earned it. Then they simply should have gone with someone else months ago.

Imo overall that's not on Dubas. That's a risk that was well understood by having a lame duck GM for several months

It looks like the more substantive discussions with the board and approval occurred at the trade deadline. That is not last minute to me.

There is risk this will fail last minute. But there is also risk Dubas can submit his resignation at anytime even if he signed. There are no guarantees.

There was reciprocity from both parties. But that all ended after what Dubas said in his presser. If Dubas wanted more then he should have expressed it from the onset well before Shanny went to the board.

Instead Dubas was playing games and was dishonest about his intentions.

I like Dubas, I thought he deserved to stay. But this debacle showed me he lacks integrity, which to me is more important than being competent.

Well, yeah but still we hope that it turns out good for the Leafs.
we all do but also Leafs is not really in a good spot, we are just a playoffs team despite getting around 110pts per season.

We have to look at Leafs as a playoffs team. Of all the Canadians teams in the past 7 years. Think only Sens got a worse playoffs records than us. The rest of the other teams all had more wins in the second round than us and some even advanced to the Conf. Finals.

Shanny is on thin ice. The man Shanny just endorsed to the board and got board approval to extend is suddenly unsure about the role.

That is embarrassing for Shanny. Shanny and the board got blindsided by it. Then it becomes clear that money is a big factor.

Thats not how business should be conducted. That’s unprofessional and frankly disrespectful and dishonest.

Yes elite players that Leafs fans constantly criticise them for underperforming year after year in the playoffs. Tell me what exactly Lou would've done that would make the core players perform much better than they did?

As for Lou having more success with the Isles, what moves did he make that made that team so much better rather than him walking into a good situation and making slight adjustments?

Also you still haven't answered what you think of the Martin and Zaitzev deals he made while he was still with the Leafs.

I agree. But I would’ve changed the head coach, not the GM.

Dubas forced Shanahan's hand by going public and telling everybody he wasn't sure whether he still wants to be the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs...no competent executive could hear those words and not raise an eyebrow and reconsider...you don't send a general who has doubts whether he wants to go or not to lead men to war.

I wonder why Matthews was handed everything after his ELC.

Conflict of interest much? Nobody from MLSE told Dubas "hey you cant have the same agent as Matthews."?

Edit: this was worse than the Muskoka Five. Dubas has the same agent as Matthews. Dubas and Keefe are joined at the hip.

Coach cant say anything to Matthews. Matthews will tell agent, agent will send angry face emoji to Dubas.
