Confirmed with Link: Kyle Dubas named President of Hockey Operations

I think Sullivan stays but we can gauge the amount of leash he has by what happens with the assistants and WB/S HC. Dubas inherited Babcock but hired his guy for the Marlies and that’s who he promoted for the Leafs once Babcock was out. NHL HCs nowadays take assistant jobs rather than sitting around waiting for mid-season openings so it’s important to have someone within the organization you’re comfortable with promoting.

Guessing he brings in one of the Marlies current assistants for WB/S, or Eric Wellwood who is Toronto’s ECHL affiliate HC and quite young and relatively forward-thinking like Dubas. Not Kyle.
Dubas spoke pretty glowingly about Sullivan in the press conference.

"If we can do good work on the long-term building, Sully can coach forever," Dubas said. "He's a great coach. So there's no real expiration date on Mike."

Obviously, circumstances can change, but sounds like Dubas has the same opinion most all the hockey world has on Sullivan.

They're both communicators. I think that bodes well for them being on the same page. Where that leads, we'll see.

I do think there's a chance the AHL staff gets overhauled this summer. We'll see about Reirden/Vellucci.

Maybe he means no expiration as in if he gets fired teams will always want him?

I agree. Dubas talked about hiring someone who is progressive which sounds like Tulsky could fit the bill but Dubas and Tulsky are both analytics guys and Dubas also said he may want someone who brings an element different from him. I don't think Spezza is ready to be GM but he does bring something different as far as being a former NHL player and having that prospective while perhaps sharing Dubas progressive hockey views in many ways. I guess we'll see.

No idea if Dubas works out here but it was refreshing to hear a younger, more articulate guy. Hextall wasn't a good speaker and came off to me like such a boring Pittsburgh dad type.

I do wonder how the GM hiring is going to work. I would have to think Dubas will handle the initial wave of UFA as interim GM since I'm not sure how a new GM could possibly have enough time to decide to sign or re-sign players on such short notice.
That is incredible, over 15k posts and 270 likes!?

Pics or it was never made!!!

Tall task for Dubas filling Burkes shoes with all the amazing things he did here. Like for example uuuhhh…
Burke worked very hard, just not for the Pens. Very few people whored themselves out with as many media interviews as Burke.

let's see what happens... hopefully Dubas and Sully see eye to eye. assuming that occurs and it doesn't work, I'll be finally and fully on the burn Sully at the stake train. Having said that, part of me is holding out hope... let it click, let Sully be reborn, and let it be magic. As a fan, I couldn't imagine hoping for anything less, despite my PTSD from the past.

For the record or for those who care or doubt... Been a fan since the late 80's, have watched most games since then.

I just watched the whole presser and I don't think there is another GM/Hockey executive in the NHL that I could possibly align my thoughts with this team more than Dubas.

He mentioned the 2 prong approach and the willingness to still compete with this core. Many of you have wrote this team off. When you have hockey minds like this telling you that you are wrong I am sorry but you are.

I've been talking about his philosophies etc for the past week. Guy is a stud and as a pens fan you all should be thrilled with this signing. I don't think we could have a better hire. He's gonna be making some interesting moves in the immediate future and this team will be fun.

The forward group was great the last two years and I'll give Sullivan his props for that.

The issue was largely the defense in the playoffs not the forward group which Hextall tried to fix and I would say probably would've worked much differently if Sullivan didn't have a hard on for Dumoulin and there weren't as many injuries as there was.
Mostly agree but the forward group could use 1 more stud to bump Rusty down.

I think what many fail to realize is that our top 4 d was in shambles with injuries for long stretches of the season. I know its hockey and we of all teams understand injuries but you get a guy back and lose 2 that's tough.

Did he just say "Sully can coach forever" ????????????????????????????
He was talking about Sid and Mike. I think the context was, Sid as a player, only has a short amount of playing career left, while a coach, the age of Sullivan has potentially many, many more years he could coach.

So that's when Sullivan decides to reign in players? Apparently the last 6yrs of this and suddenly he wants to do it to Malkin?

The entire Rangers series and the Islanders series combined is them losing their shit emotionally. They routinely do it during the regular season and let's not even forget the joke the system is where teams basically predict like a Tomlin offense, how they'll move the puck out of their zone and how they play their system.

Sullivan has been trying to make "his system" work since the collaborative coaching unit was disbanded after the 2 cups and he was left alone to his systems preaching and everyone seeing him for who he is, a Bylsma clone in a Boston wanker's costume.
I agree he chooses his victims with intent. No doubt about it. His lambs are spared. Bylsma clone is a bit harsh, but kind of funny.

Weird that he plans on hiring a GM after FA starts, unless he already knows who he wants and they are still under contract until July 1. Either hire someone now or wait until next off season. Being temporary GM for a couple months makes little sense.

I image he's gonna look for a likeminded person so there's a bit of familiarity and agreement on the approach from a base standpoint.
Not exactly what he said. He suggested the successful candidate would likely have a different skill set than his. I liked that. I thought his presser was impressive. The difference between him and Hextall is vast. Yes, he pays deference to Sully, so there's that, but this was as good as we could have done.

He will probably bring Pridham over to be GM in July some were guessing. He's the Leafs cap god like Botterill was to the Pens.
