one could, but it's much smarter to look at replacement value rather than head to head at different positions.
Then it becomes a question of what one considers replacement value for Holl. I don't think it's nearly so obvious that Holl over the next couple seasons offers as big of a net positive as some people are granting, at least not in comparison to cheap alternatives plus attractive middle six depth. Perhaps if Holl was being used as a trading chip in an inflated D market, what other GMs are doing would be a different story.

looking at the prices for rhd right now, he's a fricken steal.

I'd rather the benchmark not be what other GMs are doing and hard decisions based on what you yourself could have as an alternative. Again, if Holl was put on the market for these hungry GMs, him being kept as an asset post-expansion might change the narrative.

it's alright folks the Dubites keep telling us he's playing 4D chess while everyone else is playing checkers, we'll find out in time which he might not have and then the Dubites will tell us he never got enough time.

pretty clear that Holl would have been grabbed by seattle, and we'd have been in tough trying to replace him.

Since we dafted first overall we have bundled asset management

Both g.ms failed at restocking the cupboard kept assets that should have been traded and traded for assets and prices they never should have

That's only a concern if you consider the loss of Holl a bigger void than McCann. If you want to argue about what's going on with the D around the league versus the forwards, that works more in favour of protecting him as a trading chip. But in creating the roster itself? Separate matter.

If Seattle didn't take Dermott, they weren't taking Holl.
Seems like McCann was always going to be their choice.

Let's add Gudbrandson and Ritchie and I'm happy. Don't want any big signings just want to expose these gutless players to lots of toughness. Just keep Gudbrandson and Ritchie from Marners call of duty happy and karaoke clubs.

Danton Heinen would be nice too and only 26 years old.

How is anybody okay with this? I mean seriously!

What a joke of asset management

Ok, now I’m mad. It’s one thing to stand your ground if the offer is only a 5th or lower. However, having two picks of that nature would be valuable, and if you want a higher pick you could package two low picks to move up.

Dreger could be lying of course since he’s on a Leafs hate kick and might be a stenographers for some Oiler executive to make them look better, but if true bad move to not take two picks.

I will give Dubas credit and say that keeping Holl at $2 million AAV looks like the smarter move, given the overpay guys like Ceci have gotten. It’ll take more than just signing Mrazek and Bunting to help this team though.

Cedric Paquette at $950k for one year would have added some much needed toughness.

You've been telling us for years how Dubas is awesome, he's like your soulmate, you carpet bomb us with fancy stats showing how amazing this team is and every year we lose in the playoffs. No matter who we play we can't even get past the 1st round despite being according to you, "a top contender".

You tell others that it's OK to admit you've misjudged yet you've been misjudging this team for years and haven't admitted it even once. Why is that?

Locking into a $3.8m boat anchor with Mrazek for the next three years almost assuredly means the Leafs won’t be able to afford Riley or a comparable replacement.

It's also the absolute minimum to keep Campbell if he performs better than Mrazek. If Campbell performs worse than Mrazek then the Leafs might be a lottery team.

Yup. Like you said, maybe he's lying but if not, it's just terrible. Sounds fishy though, not taking that offer is just ... hard to believe ANY GM would be that dumb.

Somebody has to start in goal in 2022-23.

I would think extending Campbell would be the next order of business. Hopefully that can be done at a bargain price but whatever, as long as we keep shuffling bit parts around this flawed core, the odds of us going deep are near zero and if we're being realistic, we're underdogs to even get out of the first round.

Its possible I have misjudged the "clutch" ability of this team, if that is even a thing that exists.

But the team has been as good as I've thought, and better than you've thought.
