This is one of the few things that I support Dubas on.
Don’t do anything to help the opposition unless they are making it worthwhile
Same. I'm willing to bet that the Oilers management team all laughed out loud in hysterics when it was suggested Dubas might not hand over Hyman's rights for peanuts. If they offered a 6th they probably thought he'd counteroffer with a 7th because he wouldn't want to hurt their feelings.

I support any situation where Dubas makes any semblance of a stand and isn't a push over. He needs to shake that reputation.

Based on your ridiculous “logic” no team should ever make a trade because it might help out the opposition.
Why should we settle for a subpar return? a 6th is almost as good as nothing.
Why wouldn't Edmonton offer anything better?
It's a 6th buddy.... a freaking 6th
get over it

not at all. why help another team if all they are going to throw you is peanuts? its a 6th round pick, if it was a 3rd or 4th i could understand. cap space is valuable.

Exactly, because you couldn't use the extra 6th you got and, oh I don't know, combine it with a 5th to get a 4th. (as an example).

Hold your ground Kid Kyle, you're the toughest hombre in the North.

I usually love the opening of free agency almost as much as I love trade deadline day. But Spreadsheet Dubas has effed things up so badly that I can barely bring myself to care what happens tomorrow as I simply cannot get excited about signing guys to league minimum contracts and acting like that is going to make a difference next year.

You mean the 'crappy' team that made it to the finals?
Yeah, thats the team. they also finished 18th in the league or something so they wouldn;t have made it into the playoffs if covid wasn't a thing.
Can still give them credit for what they did but he's not lying. Montreal wouldn't have made playoffs if it wasn't for the Play-In's last season and Canadian Division this year, actually little more time and Ottawa prob would have taken their place this season.

If he needs a 6th in your scenario it wouldn't be hard to obtain one.
Why do you think it's important that he continues to be a pushover?

Shh. We're not supposed to talk about that. The only thing that matters when it comes to evaluating the quality of a team is playoff series wins and losses, but also, simultaneously, the cup finalists are garbage. :sarcasm:

I suppose he could always obtain one, but there will be some cost associated.

It's too late now since it's become an "issue", so he may as well hold his ground. But seems like a somewhat pointless stand to have taken.

Maybe he'll be rewarded with a better offer. We shall see.

Draft picks ALWAYS have value, my friend. Always have, always will.

No team in the history of professional sports has ever complained about having too many draft picks.

Look at the late round picks traded at the deadline every year.

It seems that Dubas has a rep of being a pushover in negotiations.’
Even taking a small stand now might bring better results for him next time.’
And if not, I can’t believe we’re arguing over a 6th round pick.

Edmonton was willing to give Dubas a draft pick for the rights to a player he had ZERO intention of re-signing Hyman.

This is the equivalent of having someone offer you a scratch and win lottery ticket for the rotten banana you’re about to throw in the garbage - - and then refusing the offer because you want a 6/49 lottery ticket.
You’re embarrassing yourself.

Wow a 6th and a 5th for a 4th. This is genius, NHL teams hire this man!

while I do agree in a sense but I let those side given the direction of our team. we basically used our own players as rentals trying to win, unfortunately we kept losing though.
Would have been nice to gain assets for our departing players but if we didn't view our selves as contenders and closer to a bubble team I think u would have seen atleast a couple of them moved for future assets

which is stupid!! (Not calling you stupid) but what other team uses current guys as “own rentals” let’s call it for what it is, just poor decision making and poor asset management.
Every other organization is able to make a decision on players, if we want him let’s sign him, if not let’s try and move him. I’m sure other teams walk their guys to UFA too but the leafs do it a lot more frequently than other teams.

Oh I have lots of them, that's just simple one that even you probably could have come up with as well if you had put your mind to it.

Yeah whatever man, very minimal value, not valuable enough to bitch about.
not valuable enough to make a thread on it
not valuable enough to argue with you anymore on it
go ahead and let this eat you up but this hardly makes Dubas a bad GM. kind of embarrassing to our fanbase with stupid threads like this

I knew u weren't calling me stupid but thx for putting that. someone prob would have reported u for that minor crap haha
call it what you want, what I said was true. I mean sure. we could have moved them but chances are the teams that would be interested would be interested in moving pieces that a selling team would like to acquire.
and considering we were trying to win our selves that direction didn't make much sense. if we won it wouldn't have mattered if we lost them after.
and if we traded them people would have bitched for selling while trying to win.
Thats the way it goes sometimes man

You haven’t negotiated many deals in you life, have you?

There’s a time to be a hard liner and a time to take what you can get.

When it’s already a foregone conclusion that your #1 LW is guaranteed to be out the door, you have to take what you can get.

That’s true, I guess my argument is they should have stuck with the plan in 17/18 and kept the rebuild going. I’m not sure why they decided after that season to scrap everything and all of a sudden go for it. The Marleau signing instead of just bringing back JVR was the beginning of the end for me lol . Good old Lou

In the last 4 years have we traded away a pending UFA? In either regime? The last time I can remember is when we traded Polak
Not what I meant, was referring to the league as a whole.
I could be wrong but is it that common for playoff bound teams to trade pending UFA's?

Yes all kinds but what we do in life is different than what they do in their jobs.
Dubas always takes what he's given, this is a cheap cost to draw a line for a change.
