At this point it's on the players and the core who have eaten up so much of the cap space who must get it done. The last couple of weeks, even in losses, they have been engaged physically. This will be key to this teams playoff success. They have played with an edge.

In the end he owns the lineup and the success or failure. He has provided the core with more complete and balanced lineups IMO. For whatever that is worth.

Their D is now more difficult for other forwards to deal with. Not as tough as I would prefer, but much tougher than in years past and far more balanced and flexible in pairing options.

All of the talk about how strong or mean the teams in the conference are should mean little to any athlete worth a grain of salt. The rules work both ways and the team is learning that they can throw bodychecks too. Is there some special rule that another team is immune from being hit?

Leafs can throw checks and drive hard. Our D can make life miserable for the opposition and clear the crease.

Once the desire to win is at its height this team can beat anyone. They've proven it. Now do it when it matters most and make all the chatter about big changes disappear.

So would every other team. Also it’s not just the Leafs that had to deal with the covid cap. He needed to adjust to the fact that the cap was going to go up but instead he opted to keep going with the core 4 taking 40% of the cap.
The ink was barely dry on all 4 deals when Covid hit. Most other contenders signed their guys well before or we’ll into this flat cap.
Then they had a thrown together summer tourney after sitting around for four months, and a Covid season, nothing about this is under normal circumstances.
Obviously other teams would have that cap to spend on their teams and there would be higher average salaries on some of the new deals, although maybe not looking at some of the D extensions handed out, but this team would undoubtedly benefit from the extra money to shore up a hole or two.

No, he was banking on the salary cap expanding as it should have except for we experienced this whole global pandemic thing.
Kyle Dubas has been an amazing GM, I really hope Shanahan and MLSE don't listen to these idiotic fans calling for his head. This is the best Toronto Maple Leafs team in decades, with the most skilled team we have ever had.

Our drafting has improved 10 fold, there are so many prospects on their way into this league with Niemela, Knies and Robertson looking to be the creme of the crop.

Then you look at Bunting, Kase, Kampf as recent guys who have exceeded expectations, all brought in by Dubas. You can criticize Mrazek and Ritchie, but he's already corrected his mistake with Ritchie and it sounds like Mrazek could be moved this summer.

If you really want to criticize him over the Marner & Matthews contracts, its literally been made up for by moving Hyman and bringing in Bunting. There's 4M+ in savings right there. That 100% covers the 2M that Mitch is overpaid.

The thing that sucks is we now need Mitch and Auston to lead this team deep into the playoffs, and if you guys had a crystal ball to see that they would struggle in the playoffs, why didn't you let every know 4 years ago?
Dubas/Shanny and Babs went on for months about the we vs me and the kids should take discounts so stop with the bs excuses

and wtf did he build exactly ? the teams carried by the players that others acquired

and oh my god what a great drafter , after 4 years we have exactly 1 player he picked on the roster and that's a D that needs to be sheltered on the bottom pairing . drafting may be good/great but that's far from certain

Why ? Who cares who his replacement might be as long as they improve the team. Dubas isn’t the only good GM candidate in hockey and they may need somebody who can make the tough decisions without having loyalty to the current players.
You have realized at this point that the Leafs have this major tendency to react to issues by swinging wildly in the other direction, right? If Shanny and Dubas are fired, I fully expect the next management team to be made up of grizzled veterans who've been around for way too long.

Watching the Avs/Oilers game

Oilers are pressuring the puck like crazy in the d-zone; no easy looks for the avs and that too with the crapshoot smith in net. If Leafs can play better defensively, pressure the puck in the d-zone, clean and fast exits its going to work.

Quite frankly... I am glad Dubas didn't overspend. I am also glad that MAF deal didn't go through and hawks rejected it. That was a STUPID deal to begin with

After seeing what alot of these players went for during the last week I think dubas made a really solid moves and didn't over pay. If the leafs fail during this post season we have our 1st round pick for a draft day move or just to pick a higher end prospect we got lots of cap coming off the books this year as well.

Over all pretty happy with this Trade dead line . Really like the additions he made , Bear , and geo kept our 1st . clear some cap / contracts , he did a good job

You can say this, this is the best D group we’ve had and the forwards the most mature. No complaints there and like the moves. But, it’s all going to come down to Campbell now, if he shits the bed, it doesn’t matter.

Dubas has “In Jack We Trust” above his desk, we’re all in. Let’s hope it works out, wouldn’t mind not having my heart stomped on this May for a change.

TOR: Giordano 1.3 + Blackwell 1.0 - Dermott 0.3 = +2.0
FLA: Giroux 2.5 + Hagg -0.4 + Chiarot -0.7 - Vatrano 0.3 - Tippett 0.0 = +1.1
TBL: Hagel 1.5 + Paul 0.3 - Raddysh 0.5 - Joseph 0.4 - Katchouk 0.1 = +0.8
BOS: Lindholm 0.3 + Brown -0.7 - Vakanainen -0.2 - Moore 0.0 = -0.6

Did I miss any moves?

To be honest, even if get a goalie we still need to score 1 more goal than opposition to win games/series; I want to think the core can but... my beleaf has gone to tatters; now I gotta actually see it to believe it.

Until core shows up in the playoffs and puts up a good defensive and offensive showing.... yea... i am not comfortable mortgaging the future.

My focus on the goalie doesn’t distract from M and M having to show up for us to have any chance, the pressure is on big time and he can stand on his head and it won’t matter. The good news, both of them have never looked better, more mature or complete, so it allows some optimism they’ve now matured and are ready to put the team on their backs.

I only remember Shanahan's comments on that subject -- repeated in the media ad infinitum.

I dont know man.... Both Matthews and Marner are having comparable season, relatively speaking, as last year's regular season. In the games when neutral ice is clogged and opposition plays hard nosed hockey or forecheck hard, I see the same old tendencies return.

To be seen how they fare again in the playoffs. I really hope we play Tampa. They either learn from that Tampa series seeing how hard Tampa competes including their superstars OR by some stroke of luck they win and gain confidence and win the whole damn thing LOL

What I don’t understand how he keeps improving a defence that’s been awesome for years and didn’t need improving. I mean…
Right?

I don't even know what to think about our D yet. I'm glad Sandin looks to have been replaced for the playoffs (not glad he's injured, but I think he'd sit even if healthy) and then one of Holl/Lily sits.

I'd rather neither played this playoffs. Boosh on the top pairing scares me. And a 38 year old Giordano doesn't inspire a great deal of confidence.

However, physically, they've moved in the right direction on D. I don't think it's enough, but it is slightly better.
