And the reality is he cleared waivers. If ever a reality piercing fact meets bogus stats. Could have had this dominance for nothing, and yet PASS. Hello.

I didn't say Petan was a special, godly player

People said he was a bad player and should be scratched. I said he's actually not a bad player, and that's a he's good bottom-6 player that only has 3 points in 15 games because of his unsustainable low on-ice sh%, as shown in that last image I posted. He's a 25-40 point bottom-6 player IMO, but we'll see. This is the first time he's seeing 3rd line usage (and not stuck to the 4th line) so should be interesting to see how this season progresses (until Moore/Johnsson come back).

Plenty of teams have similar players in their bottom-6, it's not something special. Waive him and it won't matter much. But just remember this, teams passed on Casey DeSmith, Baertschi, Dano, Ho-Sang, etc on waivers this year along with Petan and no team picked them up. Winnipeg picks up Nick Shore. You're telling me Nick Shore is better than DeSmith, or any of those players lol (I was wrong on Shore, he's been so meh)?

Holl has been a most pleasant surprise. Wouls have been nice if he had been given more of a shot earlier

Holl has surprised me so much this year, strong puck-moving D with a physical defensive side to his game. Should be interesting next year to see what happens to our shut-down pair if Muzzin doesn't re-sign. Dermott-Holl worked out well when paired together, so would be interesting to see that as the shut-down pair next year.

I don't see what everyone disliking in Petan lol. I think he's been good in his role. More points would be nice, but he's been solid defensively and knows how to play a good possession game.

To borrow a phrase, he looks like he's being chased by a swarm of bees out there. He's going a million miles an hour for no reason, gets knocked down on every play where he has the puck and was out there swarming around doing nothing on the Leivo goal against.

What I don't appreciate is the fact that Gauthier is getting scratched to make this opportunity happen.

I notice how the Leafs were playing a bit of a tougher team game last night. That level of buy in and hostility is definitely required even if you plan on playing mostly with speed and skill.

I also think the likes of Pearson, Horvat, Ferland, Miller and Roussel gave the Canucks a nice amount of bite to supplement their skill guys. Luckily for us Pettersson kept hitting the post and Boeser couldn't buy a goal.

What has Gauthier done to deserve to stay in the lineup?

They're both not nhl'ers.

Gauthier is just missing a mean streak and a higher work rate but he's generally serviceable out there whereas Petan looks like he's holding onto dear life.

This road trip could be Petan and Aberg last chance to impress before changes are made.

I think Aberg's just an inert stop gap so it doesn't bother me if he has no future with the Leafs. Petan is definitely someone's pet project. Which I think should end. Soon.

Gauthier could at least arguably be a 4th liner on a Stanley cup winner. When was the last time a 5'9 175 lbs guy who couldn't score was a regular on a cup winner?

Even if Petan is 'worth' a couple extra goals over the course of a full season, a guy like Reeves (not at his salary) is a better option because he can at least be impactful over small sample sizes, like a playoff series. Petan needs far to long to accumulate positive value, which is why no team wants a guy like him for free.

Petan also has terrible balance for a little guy, so he's not really a credible NHL forward in any situation.

Feels like turd polishing.

Reaves is bad defensively. Even Gauthier has been pretty bad after a hot-start of looking good, I thought we had something in him. Guys like Petan are at least good defensively and can play a possession game. Leipsic is on Washington's 4th line and is good defensively and can play a good possession game.

Like any GM, there’s the good, bad, and ugly with him.

Good: Drafting, developing, firing Egocock.

Bad: Contract negotiation, but I believe he will get better at that overtime.

Ugly: Backup goalie situation. Even though most agree we had to see what we had in Sparks, it’s completely backfired, and a season later it’s still a glaring need.

What's Ty Rattie up to?

Petan is a 4th liner who is consistently out-scored (career 38.3 GF% over 1114.1 5v5 minutes) by opposing 4th liners. Not a lot of goals are happening when he's on the ice because no one on the ice can make offensive plays while facing the net at the NHL level. I mean, all both of the times Petan generally touches the puck during the game, he carries the puck into the ozone and gets rubbed out along the left half-boards, which creates a dead puck 150 ft from his net. That's not good defense or puck possession, it's just mediocre low event hockey from fringe NHL player. He doesn't accomplish anything that hundreds of other guys couldn't also be coached to do.

This bashing of Petan is baffling, considering he's been arguably our best 4th line guy all year other than Spezza and maybe Engvall.

Goat and Tima started off strong, but have really fallen back. Shore was complete garbage.

People complain incessantly about "effort", and then want to get rid of the guy giving more effort than anybody else, even though he's rather inconsequential and just having pretty bad luck? It's almost like people just want to complain and have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.

Gauthier is f***ing terrible and I don't want to see him in our lineup

Everyone want to compare Kerfoot to Kadri but i would rather still have Downtown in the lineup doing what kerfoot does. Brown has put up double the points and kills penalties etc for Ottawa at $1,400,000 cheaper. Ceci needs to go, shouldn’t have been kept period. Zaitsev is actually better than Ceci except for that term.

Bad trading record starting to show.

Brown has put up double the points because he leeched points off Pageau having an insane start to the season, and because he's playing 20 minutes a game, not because he's that level of player. And he's in the last year of his deal.

Ceci needs to go, shouldn’t have been kept period.
Ceci was qualified by Ottawa. He was either kept on our terms or kept on his terms. We chose ours, and he hasn't been as bad as you claim.

Zaitsev is actually better than Ceci
Not even close. Zaitsev has been absolutely horrible in Ottawa.

except for that term.
Oh yeah, except for that thing that is massively important.
