"#4 D man"

His shot suppression is so low that
it's not even on the chart.
Like I said, not even CLOSE to a #4, raise your standards.
Your chart says he's a Complete top pairing D man. Obviously he wouldn't really register on the chart.
Russell is a #4/5. But for whatever crazy reason, he gets played like a #3+. It happened in Calgary when Gio was injured. It happened when he was on the Stars when a bunch of their guys got injured. IIRC, Stars fans didn't mind Russell when he first showed up, but things got a bit weird after Russell started getting ridiculous minutes.
There's also a lot of "lol, block shots" comments. Try looking up what other defenders block a lot of shots. There's quite a few high quality D men in that also block a lot of shots. The issue with Russell and one of his biggest warts, is that he doesn't do much else other than block shots. That happens when you're 5'10" and often put in front of guys that average 6'1"+. Then you add onto the fact that he is a defensive defenceman (vs an offensive defencemen) and you're running into issues with a little guy getting manhandled which makes it difficult for him to clear the puck.
Russell is an NHL calibre defenseman with significant warts. He should not be played as a #3 or above which he somehow TOI wise, he keeps getting. He should be a 4/5/6. IMO, probably the only reason why Russell isn't getting regular contracts is because he's asking too much salary. Russell on a 2 mil ish salary is an excellent piece to put on your 3rd pairing and can play up onto the 2nd pairing in a pinch. Anything above that, most teams probably would rather give a shot to a youngster in the AHL to see if they can put it together in the big leagues.
