Blocking a lot of shots means you play in your own end too much.

simplistic thinking... same as hits means you dont have the puck

some guys simply play a more gritty game than others do... hit more... block shots more...

im not necessarily saying russell deserves praise, but your generalized argument is bunk. some of the greatest dmen in nhl history blocked shots

Some of these posts are ****ing ridiculous. Russell is a #4, good skating and outlet pass, puts his body on the line every night and is tough as nails. If there's a scrum and he's on the ice, guarentee he's involved, wears his heart on his sleeve and sticks up for his team mates.

He has his knocks and deficiencies, but if this is true, Edmonton gets better with this signing for sure.

And I'm a Flames fan.

Yup. HF Boards in a nutshell - mostly ****ing ridiculous posts.

Its a good signing, like you said. Good depth for the d, a bit much but its only 1 year.

Solid post, I prefer Russell more as a number 5 with the abliity to play 4, but I think this makes the oilers better, we might actually ice 6 NHL Dmen for the first time in a long time.

Nope, he's a #6/#7. Nowhere close to a #4.

He gets the ice-time of a #4 wherever he goes. Coaches love him.

Is he good as a #4? I don't think so, but he can definitely play top 4 minutes unlike a lot of bottom pairing defensemen.

He improves the Oilers blueline and lets them stash their prospects away for another year.

3.1 mil doesn't make sense to me though.

If it were for longer than 1 year I'd agree but, at this point, the Oilers have a lot of d-men that could use more seasoning down in the AHL/ECHL or wherever.

Bringing in Russell to play on our bottom-pairing with a rookie could be a decent sheltering experience and we wouldn't be using the cap hit otherwise. Worst case scenario, he doesn't pan out and we have that cap space back next year.

In terms of moving Yak, I don't think it was just to pick up Russell, I think it was just time to move on combined with us having far too many RW's pushing for a spot on this team. Yak was looking at, BEST case scenario, some 3rd line minutes. Worst case scenario, he was going to be a healthy scratch or back down in the AHL.

I think you'll find that Russell isn't exactly an "NHL dman".

making certain posts can indicate we arent exactly nhl fans... some of us should spend more time in the minor leagues before exposing our screwups on the big stage

but what you meant to say, is if a team is playing russell 20 mins a night in important game situations, the team will want an upgrade

russell was forced into a top4 role in calgary due to lack of depth... he exceeded expectations and became a fan favorite, but realistically he was in over his head.

in dallas he proved his limitations again

russell wanted to be paid like a 20 min established top 4 dman... but all 30 teams felt that was too much

eventually he was paid like a low level top 4 dman. most teams have a better 4th dman. edmonton will hope nurse develops into a better top 4 dman too

russell is signed to try to get into playoffs this year... hes an improvement over fayne. the team felt he will contribute more than yakupov

That's great proof.

Good comeback. Enjoy him, I'm sure he'll help Edmonton's stellar defence big time! He's terrible, you'll learn that eventually.

I'm just glad he didn't end up on my team.

He has never played RD for anything more than spot minutes with injuries. In Junior, Schlemko played right side while he played left. In St. Louis he was partnered with Polak who plays RD. In Calgary he has been paired with wideman (RD}, Brodie (RD), and Hamilton (RD). In Dallas he was paired with Demers (RD).

He is factually, a Left Shot Left Side Defenseman.

Obviously not so much after junior, but he's certainly not new to it, and let's just say he's comfortable with the idea.
