Russell is just awful, and they still went north of $3M for him despite the fact he's not been able to get a deal all summer. Too funny.

If it's a one year deal who cares? They aren't cap pressed and an NHL dman is always welcome

If anyone thought Chia would be the end of Oilers' mismanagement, they were wrong. Only way this team is going anywhere is on McDavid's back.

Russell is neither 'decent' nor a right-side defenseman.

He absolutely can play the right side (and if they don't want him there, Sekera can), and Calgary fans/media raved about him the last year and a half. He'll be just fine.

Oilers fans in the Yak trade thread: "We got cap space too! That's valuable!"
Oilers fans in this thread: "Who cares about the cap hit? It's only a one-year deal and doesn't matter!"

Wow.
So happy that the Habs don't have to pay 3.1M/Year for a guy like freaking Kris Russell.

A 1 year deal will really cripple the Oilers.

This is exactly it. I'm just laughing at the people thinking Chiarelli needs to quit because he took a chance on a d-man for 1 year at money they don't think he's worth but that the Oilers can easily afford.

CHIARELLI YOU'RE SO BAD :sarcasm:

Getting rid of that pile of flaming garbage yakupov and adding russell and a 3rd ain't too bead - as questionable as Russell may be he is better than yak

Russell is definitely an NHL d-man. He's not a great one, but his best skills are in transition and the Oilers desperately need that.

He will also bring some character to a team that has none. It's a no risk move for a team that has no desire or ability to compete for the cup this year. 1 more year of rebuild, then it's go time while McDavid's contract is still less than 8 digits.
