What's so bad about Russell? Thought this guys was a Top 4 D just a few months ago?

2022 Cup to Calgary
He absolutely can play the right side, and Calgary fans/media raved about him the last year and a half. He'll be just fine.

He has never played RD for anything more than spot minutes with injuries. In Junior, Schlemko played right side while he played left. In St. Louis he was partnered with Polak who plays RD. In Calgary he has been paired with wideman (RD}, Brodie (RD), and Hamilton (RD). In Dallas he was paired with Demers (RD).

He is factually, a Left Shot Left Side Defenseman.

We have to pay $3.5M/yr for a guy like David Desharnais. That's worse.

Don't mind Desharnais, tho, if he plays on the 3rd line, like he should be.

The problem is when the Coach go full ****** and put him on the 1st.

But a 3rd line Desharnais is pretty ok with me.

Russell is definitely an NHL d-man. He's not a great one, but his best skills are in transition and the Oilers desperately need that.

He will also bring some character to a team that has none. It's a no risk move for a team that has no desire or ability to compete for the cup this year. 1 more year of rebuild, then it's go time while McDavid's contract is still less than 8 digits.

Cheers for a level-headed view of this.

Oilers signed him so he's automatically one of the worst players out there.

His best skill is shot blocking. Red flag no.1

Look.

We got Klefbom, Larsson and Nurse. How many high end blue chips do we need? Sure Sekera is getting older and Reinhart will never reach is draft status, but we dont need to sell off assets for another guy anymore. We will be fine unless something falls in our lap.

Well it seems that Chris Russell may have just fell into your lap.Good luck.:sarcasm:

Terms good.

But he's a #5 who'll be played like a #3 and will suffer for it

I don't think so. He'll be a #4 at most behind Sekera, Larsson and Klefbom, and even then I would like to see him on the third pairing as a veteran presence.

Term and money are fine. That's a worthy risk to take.

Wouldn't even surprise me to see Davidson playing ahead of him which puts him in the bottom pairing with the ability to move up a pair if someone goes down with an injury (Klefbom).

I feel like anyone saying this is a terrible deal is just plain wrong. Low risk at 1 year, and what the hell else are they going to get to improve their defence for 3 million without giving up assets? Even if Russell is as bad as some people are making him out to be, he is a proven NHL defenceman, and after the last bunch of seasons the Oil will certainly welcome that.

Some of these posts are ****ing ridiculous. Russell is a #4, good skating and outlet pass, puts his body on the line every night and is tough as nails. If there's a scrum and he's on the ice, guarentee he's involved, wears his heart on his sleeve and sticks up for his team mates.

He has his knocks and deficiencies, but if this is true, Edmonton gets better with this signing for sure.

And I'm a Flames fan.

It really is going to be like this forever for the Oilers, isn't it?

Edmonton's going to get criticized, but, given their d-core going into the season, signing Russell for the year isn't bad at all.

Nope, he's a #6/#7. Nowhere close to a #4.
