He also clearly values power forwards. Lucic, Maroon, Kassian so why does him needing defense equate to him him dealing the power forward he acquired just last season who has been nothing but great for his team for a bottom pairing Dman?

Just going back to my original point, that if he is truly solidifying the defense via trade, you have to give value to get value, or else everything would just be a lateral move on the blue line.

You wont be able to give up something crappy AND truly solidify the defense in the sense that Chiarelli is on the prowl for at the same time

I dont think Fayne or Reinhart truly suck by any means, but its clear he is looking for something adequately more from one of those blue line spots

Since RNH was named assistant captain i see that he is in the Oilers long term plans behind Mcdavid so maybe Oilers can dangle Draisaitl for one of the top defenders available either on the Ducks or out to east coast . They have the luxury of doing so and you cant keep all young talent must have experienced vets/super stars to have a nice balance throughout the lineup .

Oilers can reach stardom n Stanley Cup sooner if they use their assets wisely and make some good trades like the Kings did with acquiring Richards , Carter , Penner , Stoll , Greene. Roll players and star fire power

They can be scary good

I think this is an option, but if so, I doubt it would be until after the expansion draft.

If it's short term, that might be a great option.

Not far from Calgary at all and Calgary can't sign him with Johnny Hockey still left to re-sign. He's a good D-Man, more shutdown then anything though.

Sure but Maroon is more valuable to the Oilers than TVR would be. Davidson is just as good if not better. I think Chia is looking at bargain bin shopping either waivers or a more expendable asset like Yak. I can safely say that Maroon won't be dealt to fill this need.

Thats true, but what you are offering is a lateral move on the blueline and is an overall downgrade for the team, no matter how much you want to overvalue your player.

Now I'll admit I dont know much about the player (like you obviously dont know much about the players you've listed on the Oilers), but playing all 82 games and being a minus player on the Hawks would indicate that he’s not the type of player to target to solidify the defense, and definitely not the type of player to give up Maroon for (especially with the contract he’s currently being paid by the Oilers).

Probably not, but if the money or cap# doesn't hurt your club, then why not add that dimension. It doesn't grow on trees these days, either. He's barely a liability on D as an enforcer. Again, an expensive one. I guess what bugs me is a guy won't be playing where he could help a club, because he makes a bit too much.

"A bit" too much? Stoner is a decent 6/7 guy who is significantly overpaid with term remaining. If the Oilers are looking to upgrade the blueline, I doubt that adding 6/7 kind of guy is what they have in mind.

Look.

We got Klefbom, Larsson and Nurse. How many high end blue chips do we need? Sure Sekera is getting older and Reinhart will never reach is draft status, but we dont need to sell off assets for another guy anymore. We will be fine unless something falls in our lap.

Damn. Was hoping to have him back. People look at the advanced stats and **** on him far too often. He's a good #4/5 who's a reliable PKer and will throw himself in front of a train if it means preventing a shot on net.

The bolded is the issue. He's not good enough at other aspects of defending to limit shots taken, so he ends up blocking them. Shot blocking is a skill, I won't argue that; but it should be one of the last resorts defensively. Like, breaking up an odd-man rush is a great skill to have, but if you're leading the league in odd-man rushes broken up, it raises the question: why are there so many odd-man rushes against when you're on the ice?

Things Russell is good at:
-blocking shots
-lateral movement
-offensive zone passing

Things Russell is not very good at:
-cutting off zone entries
-blocking passes
-winning board battles
-stripping the puck
-outlet passes

And I'd argue he's roughly average, for a 4/5 dman, at everything else.
