3. (After the fact I've heard) conversations with Kreider's agent supposedly started at 7 a.m. and then final offer came about 9 a.m., with the Rangers including a 7th year. Kreider's term was gradually compromised from $7.25 at the start of talks. If true, he exchanged $5 million on his salary demands for a 7th year on his contract.
I knew it

Way too much smoke about them not wanting to give the 7th year, and then Gorton caved last minute this morning

however the over the top vitriol towards kreider and the complete obfuscation of who he is as a player is sickening.

This is arguably the best power forward in the league. A.

lol, on a week when Ovechkin nets #700

I think you could make that argument with DeAngelo based on him cutting out his antics which made management giving him a long term contract (and would make a 4th team at his age be a huge red flag).

Not like Kreider trained harder this year because he was training for a $day. The difference this year is consistency. We always knew his highs but his problem was always confidence and beating himself up. One could argue theres a reason he has improved since playing with Buch since Buch is doing now what Kreider did as a younger player, hence why Kreider has taken a leadership role on the team. He sees himself in his teammates and how far he has come and wants to help them.

Well he did it
He played the way we always thought he could
And what was his motive?
The result we got today
I believe and I hope I'm wrong that with his millions he'll go right back to who he always was..
I just think they fell in love with the idea of making the playoffs now
But in doing so we sacrificed the future
We would have gotten 2 solid prospects(one being a first round pick)
Hopefully instead we get the kreider of today for the next 5+ years
But to give up those two prospects for the hope kreider becomes a consistent 60+ point power forward is a huge gamble.
Good luck

If you cant make the differention between MacKinnon, Matthews, McDavid, Draisaitl, Barkov, Crosby, ROR, Bergeron and Zibanejad, that sounds like a you problem.
Holy lack of complete prespective, Batman. Let's take out McDavid and Crosby shall we? Those are true generational talents.

As for the rest? No, I really cannot tell that much of a difference. Especially that while playing with a top line wing is great, he does not have any elite level players on his line. Put him on a line with Panarin for the entire year and let's see how all of the numbers compare

I doin't really look at Ovechkin as a power forward

He likes to throw hits without the puck but his real game has always been far more about his ability to shoot the puck than to play a power forward style game like going to the net or dominating along the boards

Just because he's big and fast and sometimes throws a hit doesn't make him a "power forward". Far more comfortable calling him a sniper before calling him a power forward

Fair deal for a key piece to the puzzle. If this stings in year 6 and 7, let’s just hope we have a ring to show for it along the way. Kreider certainly will be a big part of it.

Ovie is a sniper. He stands 15 feet out and rips 1 timers. He's big and heavy sure but he doesn't play a power forward along the boards game. He hits hard but he's a very different player than your typical go to the net power forward.

Well
So...I've been reading a ton of negativity regarding this deal..and I'm certainly against it as I've made clear, however the over the top vitriol towards kreider and the complete obfuscation of who he is as a player is sickening.

This is arguably the best power forward in the league. A top 5 net front presence in the league. A top 5 fastest skater in the league. A key driving force in one of the top 10 lines in hockey right now (arguably). A guy whose getting paid a bit more than half of the guy we just signed as an u. F. A.

Make no mistake he left a ton of money on the table. I can bet you anything someone would have offered him 8m a year for 7 years EASILY.

This is a terrific deal right now. This is a terrific deal the next 3 years. What this is is a very dangerous deal in years 6 and 7.

THAT is why I'm against it. Chris kreider is a great player. He's not some middling player people can wish into existence with the snap of a finger. He's a top line winger on at least half the teams out there.

Well this contract is the tipping trend in contracts these days. You're paying player the money he should be makin the next 2 to 4 years and then the rest you have just swallow and maneuver with the cap.

besides the past few weeks before the trade deadline in a contract year Kreider didn’t play the boards this hard either. Ovechkin is a do everything player include power, speed hitting sniping, you name it. He’s not finesse. He’s more of a freight train.

Yuck. Unless the offers for Kreider were just god awful (odds are they weren't), this is terrible asset management. The rebuild is still ongoing. Not saying you need to be in a forever rebuild, but this team isn't ready yet for a Cup run. Still need a couple more young pieces.

I very much disagree with the first part of your statement and think that this again is a symptom of people only paying attention to points and not to how players actually play the game.

Still waiting for details on the extension... please post if its official.
If there's a modified NTC that kicks in years 3-4 then it should be considered a good extension. If not we could have Lucic 2.0 on our hands in a few years.

But Lucic could never skate...and eventually was going to turn his hands into cement pounding them into buckets.

Thoughts and prayers to The Crypto Guy and Go Away Staal on this trying day in their lives. My condolences to the families.

reminds of when the Giants took Barkley and some were so proud like they won a debate yet couldn’t see the dangers until many losses and years later with the cap.

Everyone loves to use the word "Cave" for dramatic effect. In a negotiation you need to give to get. They gave the 7th year to drop down the AAV and likely to structure it the way they did.

Not even counting Trouba, this team has like $25m on the roster just collecting dust.

Kreider was also already here so this only adds like 1.9m to the cap. I'll see myself out.

so you’ve seen Kreider play the boards as passionately throughout his career as he has for the past few months. Really? And now Kreider is a better power forward than Ovechkin? Stop, please

What more does Zib need to do for some of you.

And yeah I'd move Trouba if possible.

I'd feel better about this if not for hearing about the Igor news.
Listen Igor has been the MVP of the games he’s won for sure. He’ll be key to the team when he comes back next year too though. This deal doesn’t signify “do or die” this year. It’s “do or die” within the same window as the one opened up by the Panarin signing - 4 years or so if I had to guess.

It just sucks for the fact that we probably can’t sign Deangelo now.
