Has there been any confirmation on the extent of the NMC?

We already know it's front-loaded; if he is movable after 3 or 4 years on top of that, then it's not so bad.

Thats some serious twisting of words there. If you cant see why O'Reilly is better than Zibanejad I dont know what to tell you, other than you need to watch more hockey because you clearly didnt watch a single second of last years playoffs.

It's nothing against Zibanejad by the way, he is a top 10-15 center, ROR is top 5-7. History dictates you need one in the 5-7 range.

No one was putting ROR in that category until one playoff run. Mika wasn't fortunate to be on the St. Louis Blues last year and didn't have a chance to have that run. Mika is also significantly outproducing him, I know it's not all offense, but it's not like Mika is poor defensively. And at some point offense matters.

One of the big disconnects between the "sign Kreider" crowd and the "trade Kreider" crowd seems to be the belief that the Rangers are rebuilt enough to compete for multiple Cups, versus not.

As I had said many times, if it were possible, signing Kreider to this deal after trading him for assets for the rest of the year FIRST would have been way more palatable.

In any case, I'm very interested to see if they decided they can't live without Kreider but are still in asset accumulation mode, or if they are thinking they are gonna line up and compete for a title next year. Because if it's the latter, I couldn't possibly disagree more strongly and I would be terrified they are killing off their true title chances down the line.

Hasn't Gorton shown in his tenure as GM that he is not afraid to trade people when he views their future contract as cost prohibitive vs future production. He has traded plenty of players away the last 3 years and has not paid them. He must believe that what Kreider brings is worth the price and term and he can sign players in the future. As I have stated many time we have plenty of money coming off the books next year.

Zibanejad is a big 2 way center that has 134 points in his last 130 games over the past 2 seasons and is trending upwards. Hes a franchise center at this point.

I guess it comes down to semantics. IMO the term franchise center is reserved for the top 5 ish I listed. If you want to extend franchise center to include the top 15 centers that is your right.

Well he did it
He played the way we always thought he could
And what was his motive?
The result we got today
I believe and I hope I'm wrong that with his millions he'll go right back to who he always was..
I just think they fell in love with the idea of making the playoffs now
But in doing so we sacrificed the future
We would have gotten 2 solid prospects(one being a first round pick)
Hopefully instead we get the kreider of today for the next 5+ years
But to give up those two prospects for the hope kreider becomes a consistent 60+ point power forward is a huge gamble.
Good luck

So...I've been reading a ton of negativity regarding this deal..and I'm certainly against it as I've made clear, however the over the top vitriol towards kreider and the complete obfuscation of who he is as a player is sickening.

This is arguably the best power forward in the league. A top 5 net front presence in the league. A top 5 fastest skater in the league. A key driving force in one of the top 10 lines in hockey right now (arguably). A guy whose getting paid a bit more than half of the guy we just signed as an u. F. A.

Make no mistake he left a ton of money on the table. I can bet you anything someone would have offered him 8m a year for 7 years EASILY.

This is a terrific deal right now. This is a terrific deal the next 3 years. What this is is a very dangerous deal in years 6 and 7.

THAT is why I'm against it. Chris kreider is a great player. He's not some middling player people can wish into existence with the snap of a finger. He's a top line winger on at least half the teams out there.

So a few things I can share now that they don't matter:

1. Rangers were pushing the Avs for Newhook to see if they could at least get him into the discussion. That was ongoing right into this morning.

2. Dallas was very interested and was supposedly open to moving Robertson, but wanted to expand the deal a little. Andersson's name did come up.

3. (After the fact I've heard) conversations with Kreider's agent supposedly started at 7 a.m. and then final offer came about 9 a.m., with the Rangers including a 7th year. Kreider's term was gradually compromised from $7.25 at the start of talks. If true, he exchanged $5 million on his salary demands for a 7th year on his contract.

4. Teams calling on Fast. Calgary may be on hold for right now.

5. At least one call on Trouba in the aftermath of the Kreider signing.

Still waiting for details on the extension... please post if its official.
If there's a modified NTC that kicks in years 3-4 then it should be considered a good extension. If not we could have Lucic 2.0 on our hands in a few years.

Great post and thank you for the sanity which has been in short supply today.

I kind of wanted another 1st and a good prospect. But I can’t say I’m upset. I trust Gorton and our FO, and 6.5 mil a year is great. I really hope this decision was made for the long-term, and not swayed by this year’s run. I’m happy that Mika and Buch are probably happy as hell about this. I will only be mad if they can’t resign DeAngelo.

Very curious about that Dallas offer.
Fast to Calgary... please tell me it s for Zavgrodoniy and a 2nd.
And Trouba... doubt he's going anywhere after just signing. If he goes you might as well mail it in, gut the defense try and trade Staal and Skjei
I can't see Gorton going into THIS draft with one 1st rounder and no 2nds. He should be moving Fast, Strome and even Skjei by 3PM.

As much as I thought Kreider re-signing would bother me, at the end of the day the Panarin/Kreider/Zibanejad trio has by-far the greatest capacity as an offensive foundation for this team in the near future.

Everything Gorton has done since he took over is look towards the future. He started the rebuild and has traded a ton of players and acquired many top draft picks and younger prospects in the process. Just because he signed Kreider doesn't mean this has changed at all. He is not stupid and has preached patience and I won't believe for a second that this deal was done with anything but the future in mind.

Great post. This is an honest and in my opinion a completely accurate assessment.
