We had the best rental on the market, and instead of trading him, we resigned him for 7 years, with trade protection clauses, and quite possibly a buyout proof contract.

What a f*cking coup!!!!!!! /s
Simply having does not mean that you need to trade him. The Rangers wanted him. Kreider wanted to stay. They found a way to get the deal done.

You are seriously suggesting he is?

You're like a fan of the Kardashians. Your understanding of who the best players are seem to be in line with who are the biggest names. Mika is on pace for arounf 100 points, RIGHT NOW he's as good as anyone on that list not named Crosby or Malkin.

What the f*ck did you just f*cking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the f*ck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my f*cking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, f*cker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're f*cking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your f*cking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're f*cking dead, kiddo.
wait, wait, wait.... hold your horses... uhm... YOU'RE A GIRL GAMER?!!?! O_O Not to be a freak, but.. just when I thought you couldn't get more attractive.. you started playing video games. Nicely done, m'lady. You've just become every man's dream woman. If you had missed a couple before, now you can be sure you've got us ALL "drooling", lol.

Kreider has found great chemistry with Zibby on the second line. I also think Kreider figured things out now later in his career. I think he used to be focused on succeeding with his speed. He now learned to be effective planting himself in front of the goalie trying to screen and deflect shots.

I think we will we a better Kreider the next few years. The Kreider that we see today.

Honestly, I think the contract conversation was 6 years and 7.5. I think JG wanted to do the 7th year to lower the AVV by 1m. So it’s like the 7th year is worth 1.5m while saving 6m for the 6 years (saving the 1m a year).

What Kreider’s cap hit is now to what it will be going up on the new deal, our salary cap will only be going up around 1.9m a year.

We have a ton of salary coming off the next few years with Lundqvist and Staal.

Problem is, don't resign him, who replaces him next season, and perhaps the one after that? It would be at least three seasons before any trade assets for Krieder become replacement value.

Still no playoffs, and then the chatter is to trade Mika for assets. Then we're in that perpetual Edmonton rebuild because of the thought that "assets" are better than actuality.

This so called "window" is opening a lot sooner than some seem to have wanted. And it's going to close a lot sooner if JG isn't smart about it.
This is exactly right. This is a direct result of winning the Kakko lottery. The window shifted forward on that day, shifted again when Panarin hit the ice running, and again when Shesterkin transitioned to NA with ease.

Prior to last year’s draft lottery, the team was hoping to compete in 2022. That was when the window was supposed to open. On that timeline, a couple of more 18-20 year old high end prospects made sense. We now find ourselves with the window already open, though, so the need is for immediate contributions. They were not going to be able to replace Kreider’s production and role over the next 1-3 seasons with assets gleaned from trading him.

Now, all of that said, I am not sure how I feel about the decision to accelerate the rebuild in general. I am on record as having preferred a more deliberate approach, which included a likely top 5 pick this year, that would allow for a decade plus of contention vs the 3-5 years we’ll likely see with this group. Will be interesting to see this play out.

the plan was never to trade everyone over 25 for draft picks and prospects so you can remain in a rebuild forever. at some point you need to keep guys, that doesn't mean the whole plan is out the window.

Post makes too much sense , I am mostly a lurker but NYR board is 95 % emotional pessimist. 7 years is longer than I would like , but I did want them to keep CK.Not a pessimist so I don't think that one of the games premier physical specimens game is going to fall of a cliff on his 31st birthday.I get the rebuild IMHO you are not going to win a cup with a bunch 24 yr olds that are not battle tested in the POs.CK brings that poise , he has been clutch in the POs has been on teams in gruelling 7 games series has been on teams that came back from down 3-1 twice, has been to multiple ECF & a SC. The time will come when this team will need that leadership in the POs.

For sure, just going off name brand, if by that you mean names on trophies

It sure is exciting stockpiling picks and young potential talent, but in the end thats all it is. Potential.

Nice to have some sure things, and with Kreids, Zib, Panarin and Trouba as part of the vet core of this team I think its a great foundation to continue to add young talent to.

That is likely entirely because of October when he spent time with Kakko and Strome.

If we are factoring in that, then we should factor in Kreider giving a damn for the last 2 months and playing hard every game to make sure he got a good contract.

Can't wait for every second of Kreider's play to be overanalyzed for the next few games

Next few games? Actually next few years. The drama queens will whine every time he makes a mistake, takes a penalty, shanks a shot. Good Lord. I could have done without the 7th year but both sides had to compromise. He makes this team unquestionably better and there was nobody who was going to immediately replace what he brings both on and off the ice. Too many people on here worry about what is going to happen 4-5 years down the road, lol. Gorton will manage the cap and we have 20 million coming off the books after next year. It's not as dire as people think but go ahead put your tutu's on and continue to whine.

Yuck. Unless the offers for Kreider were just god awful (odds are they weren't), this is terrible asset management. The rebuild is still ongoing. Not saying you need to be in a forever rebuild, but this team isn't ready yet for a Cup run. Still need a couple more young pieces.
